Pastor Tony Evans said, if a woman is not submissive to her husband, every other thing godly she does is irrelevant. Unless, her husband knows that he is the head of their house, she’s a carnal woman.
Kendy
This is pretty extreme. This is his opinion; it’s certainly not shared by all.

What if she wants to work outside the home because she is gifted and passionate about a particular work?

Kendy
If this means that the kids are in daycare, then I’d say that the woman is selfish. If the woman doesn’t have kids, then unless it creates friction with her husband I don’t see why it should be a problem.

Kendy:
If your husband will not “lead,” you should not take initiatives on behalf of the family but wait in pray that he will fulfill this role.

Kendy
This is different from the Catholic understanding of marriage—we are to help our spouses get to heaven (true love desires the best and highest good for the bloved, and that means heaven). Speaking for myself, I can tell you that if I had not taken the lead in returning to God, it wouldn’t have happened. Sure, I’d love it if my husband would take the lead (and I pray that he does). However, he has followed my lead, and become much more active and serious about his faith. He has thanked me several times for bringing him back to his faith (actually, since he was not raised in a religious home it might be more accurate to say “introduce” instead of “bringing back”), which is quite a confirmation of that understanding of the role of the spouses.

No,it’s shared by all, but when a major evangelical preacher says something, it matters. As far as I know, no one has renounced this.Maybe, some people have, but they have not been heard. There are many egalitarian evangelicals, but the complementarians (as they call themselves) are a lot more powerful.

Would you have a problem with a stay at home dad?

I think comps would say this is fine. You have to follow the Lord first. It matters more on issues like, should the family move.where should we send the kids to school, how should we spend money?

It depends upon the age of the kids. I think women are very, very important in those early years—and I think it’s part of being a woman to be there in those early years. But when the kids get older, then a stay-at-home Dad seems fine if that works out best for the family.

On the other hand, what happened in your marriage is what is often recommended by comp leaders. If your husband will not “lead,” you should not take initiatives on behalf of the family but wait in pray that he will fulfill this role.

Pastor Tony Evans said, if a woman is not submissive to her husband, every other thing godly she does is irrelevant.
Does he think the wife should submit if her husband asks her to “lead”? 😃

I am much to lazy to look up the exact verse, so forgive me for this. But in Peter it says that if a man does not honor his wife his prayers won’t be heard in heaven. Now that is a pretty scary statement. If I was a man I would be terrified that I wasn’t honoring my wife. Yet, I can’t remember every hearing a sermon on a man honoring his wife and when it was mentioned it was not dwelt on. The verses on wifely submission do not mention any sort of punishment if the woman does not obey her husband and are followed by verses telling the husband to love his wife.

Even Godly men can make mistakes in judgement. I believe that is why women were given brains equal to men’s. We all have faults. What if the husband has problems with spending? Should the woman handle the finances if he insists?

No, because he would be asking her to sin by destroying God’s order for the family and so, she could not lead even if he wants her to.

Well, I think a comp would say that she can handle the finances as long as she doesn’t do it in a directive way. Perhaps, the husbands think the family priorities should look one way, but she’s better at keeping the books. She should use that subvert her husband’s authority.

Kendy, what’s a “comp”? Forgive me if you’ve already explained this in another post.

Sorry. A comp is short for complementarian.Within evangelicalism, there are two opposing factions complementarian (their views are best represented by Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood) and egalitarians (represented by Christians for Biblical Equality).Complementarian believe in what they call two-point male headship. Headship in the home and in the church. In the church, women cannot teach or have authority over adult males (some extremist believe this should apply to anything in society) and in the home, complementarians believe that men should “lead their families.”

I have read a couple of articles on this site, which seem to hold similar views.

Aye yai yai…guess Mother Theresa would be ruled out! And just think of how much poorer we would be without that great Doctor of the Church, St. Theresa of Avila! On a personal level, I can’t imagine our parish being without the talents of our Religious Education director, a very holy woman. Thanks for the info.

I am confused by the last line. Do you mean that she could use keeping the checkbook as a means to subvert her hubby’s authority? Or do you mean she shouldn’t use keeping the checkbook as a means to subvert her husband’s authority? Sorry for the confusion.

By similar views do you mean eglatarian or complementarians? Sorry, I am just unusually dense today.🙂
