It was pretty uncomfortable, actually. I got a weird look or two, and I felt completely the opposite of modest, since I was sort of drawing attention to myself. 😦

Any of you gals do that when/if you have to go to the NO Mass? How do you feel about it?

At first my family and I did get a few funny looks. But after awhile no one even gives us a second look. We sit up front and never ever tell anyone else that they should cover. This has gone on for years and I have noticed a few other women wear hats to every Mass now šŸ™‚ . Sometimes it is best not to read into the looks you get. I know of a few women that would like to wear a veil but their husbands don’t want them tooooo.🤷

A couple of weeks ago another lady gave my daughter an expensive mantilla and told her how nice she looks in her coverings. 😃

The funny thing is we are sometimes called the Amish Catholics of the parish.😃

I know you are talking to women. But,check it out.I find it oddly appealing in some way.I’m engaged to be married. So,I don’t wish to give the wrong impression. But,there is a certain ā€˜something’,that i don’t know what it is.Old fashioned ,…I don’t know.I could get in trouble because my fiancee posts in this forum. But, there is something extremely attractive in a ā€˜HOLY’ sort of way about the gals that where the veils.Even though they are older.
I personally think that it is a hold over from times gone past and isn’t necessarily necessary(necessarily). But there is a certain ā€˜old school’ charm to it.
Like a social statement.or a political or religious statement being made.
I like it.It speaks of reverence and holiness.Like ā€˜taking the veil’ when a gal becomes a Nun.if only for an hour or so,…

Hahaha, it’s a good way for traditional guys to spot potential wives. 😃

I wear hats/veils to the NO all the time, and if people stare at me, that’s them. I’m usually too wrapped up in my prayers to notice if they do or not.

Kathleen, my wife has 4 different colors, to go with what ever her dress is. She lately has been wearing her hat because her veil keeps slides off her head.

Do you have this problem, or can you offer advise on this?

Thanks!

Oh! We only have access to the OF and it doesn’t look like we will ever have the EF. 🤷

Hey, Like, I’m butting even though you asked Kathleen :p. I usually use bobby pins to hold mine in place. They can loop through holes in the lace and into the hair easily.

No, you are not butting in. I should have just made it general question.😊

My wife is 70 and has tried a hair pin but doesn’t like for it to show, and I don’t use hair pins:blush: so I am unable to help her.

Could you offer her any instructions on how you do it?
Sorry, I know this sounds weird, but she is becoming a bit senile with age. 🤷

Speaking as a non-veiler–

Perhaps it’s not as much of an issue as you think? The orthodox-magnet parish near my house has a higher percentage of veiling women then normal, but still probably in the 5-10% range at most. At other parishes in the area, maybe none at all cover their heads, or maybe just a handful, depending on the parish.

I can’t say that it’s ever drawn my attention, in any parish, and I’ve never really noticed it being a cause of attention on the part of others, either.

As kindly as possible, may I ask, is it possible that this is a bigger deal to you than it is to the people around you? Are you perhaps looking for or expecting weird glances and expressions and such? Perhaps misinterpreting normal behaviors on peoples’ parts?

Just a thought… I live in Silicon Valley. We have such a wide range of people and attires in the malls and grocery stores and libraries and such, from full-hijab Muslim women, to saree-wearing Indians (including some to-die-for gorgeous outfits at Mass) to goth chicks with a frightening number of facial piercings. It takes an awful lot for me to notice someone as looking different, KWIM? Like, a heckuva lot more than a lacey chapel veil or an artfully draped scarf covering the hair… You’d almost need to sprout a second head or something before really garnering a lot of funny looks. šŸ™‚

I will just slightly back comb my hair so a bobby pin will hold a little better. Also a hair comb can be attached to the veil and do the same thing.

In winter and on real windy days I use a long scarf wrapped around my head and neck.

Also these are nice when you want the look of a small hat and are still covered.

Sew a comb in it. It will stay put for sure.

Mahalo Ladies!

The wife has what she calls a ā€œshort tight permā€.The hair comb sounds good, we’ll check it out.šŸ‘

You know, they say a veil is suppouse to be a sign of modesty but I can’t help but be attracted by a girl who shows due reverence to the Lord šŸ˜›

Wish there were more guys like you!! lol my fiance would probably be happier if I didn’t show so much reverence.

On the topic, no one in my parish wears a veil…No one! and I’ve been to every mass time offered. We have a huge parish with several hundred at each mass with 5 masses each weekend.

I used to wear veils all the time at my mother’s church b/c whole families of girls will show up veiled. I just didn’t want to draw attention to myself and I have had experience with nasty comments before. Just didn’t want to cause conflict while trying to focus on the mass

I don’t wear a mantilla (I’m just not a lace person, unfortunately), but I wear a scarf. Our parish only offers NO Mass, and if anyone’s ever stared at me, I’ve not noticed.

I attended a later Mass than usual one Sunday and there was a mother and daughter, both with mantillas on, but they’re the only others that I’ve ever seen in my parish.

I wonder if the ā€œfunny looksā€ phenomenon might be a regional issue? Only because RedMeg posted what I would have (almost word-for-word: I’m fellow non-veiler with the identical perspective) and we’re from roughly the same region of CA (only I attended the orthodox-magnet parish in another part of the Bay Area.)

However, I can see a veiled woman causing much more of stir out here in the east where zeal doesn’t seem to be much appreciated and conventionality is a prime civic virtue. (I miss CA; there are some positives to the anything-goes attitude.)

I think funny looks absolutely should not deter you from practicing a licit devotion that’s of spiritual benefit to you. The funny looks will subside over time- and, anyway, it’s absolutely none of anyone else’s business which private devotions you practice.

Whenever I see someone wearing a veil at the OF Mass, I invariably see them looking around, fishing for a reaction from others. They seem disappointed when no one notices them. That’s when I see some rather funny looks, from the wearer.

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only male who feels that way.

I would hesitate to say that women who wear a veil to an OF parish wear it to get a reaction. Maybe they do it because Canon Law never actually banished the practice.

lol. Yes, i’m sure that happens

Now let me guess where you stand on liturgical issues… hmmm.
