Interesting suggestions…

Both of these songs are good examples of when love goes off the rails. They aren’t really great love songs. They’re obssession songs.
And love never goes off the rails sometimes? 😉 In defense of “When a man loves a woman” It is widely viewed as a great love song and was a number 1 hit in its time. Some people can relate to feeling that you are that in love. It is not that you would literally “sleep out in the rain if she said that is the way it oughta be” I take this to mean that he feels he would do almost anything to keep this woman. I have been there. It is a secular song, the woman is #1 in the guys life. If a man tells his wife “You are my everything” It would not jump to my mind that the guy is obsessed. It just sounds nice. Whether he IS that obsessive or not, frankly, is their problem 😛

Fair enough. At any rate, it is on high rotation on my itunes. Certainly the intensity of the vocal performance conveys an emotion that the lyrics alone cannot.

Indeed. What is also great about the song is Percy Sledge wrote it himself. The song was also named 54th on Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 greatest songs of all time” Also, I heard once (but I dont know if it is 100% true) that “When a man loves a woman” is the only song to ever be a #1 hit, that does not rhyme at all.

This has been mine and my husband’s “song” since we first started talking about marriage… 6 years ago:

youtube.com/watch?v=ewfGisMeLRg

It’s about marital lovemaking, and giving yourself to each other in marriage. I think one of the band members wrote it as a gift for his fiance. We used it on our wedding video, and on the slide show we made for our reception. Anyway, I think it’s absolutely beautiful and it’s not the usual cliche type love song.

Lyrics:

“Hard To Concentrate”

Hustle, bustle and so much muscle
Cells about to seperate
And I find it hard to concentrate and

Temporary this cash and carry
I’m stepping up to indicate
The time has come to deviate and

All I want is for you to be happy and
Take this moment to make you my family and
Finally you have found something perfect and
Finally you have found

Death defying this mess I’m buying
It’s raining down with love and hate
And I find it hard to motivate and

Estuary is blessed but scary your
Heart’s about to palpitate
And I’m not about to hesitate and

One to treasure the rest of your days here and
Give you pleasure in so many ways dear and
Finally you have found something perfect and
Finally you have found…

Do you want me to show up for duty and
Serve this woman and honor her beauty and
Finally you have found something perfect and
Finally you have found… yourself

With me… will… you… agree to take
This man… into your world…
And now… we are as one…

My lone ranger the heat exchanger
Is living in this figure eight
And I’ll do my best to recreate and

Sweet precision and soft collision
Hearts about to palpitate
And I find it hard to seperate and

All I want is for you to be happy and
Take this woman and make you my family and
Finally you have found someone perfect and
Finally you have found…

All I want is for you to be happy and
Take this woman and make you my family and
Finally you have found someone perfect and
Finally you have found… yourself.

There is no greater love song than one about one’s own child

“Kayla”

Kayla, led by God’s hand to foreign land just to find you
And Kayla, we’re all here open arms waiting here just to have you
The patience, was the hardest but we’d wait forever
For Kayla, now you’re here and our hearts are feeling much better
Now you’re safe at home
Tucked in your bed
Daddy and Mommy are here
The promise is kept

Kayla’s little face lights the world like a pure ray of sunlight
And Kayla’s, little steps make us run to the highest of power
Where we understand
God’s special plan
Is to share our love
With our fellow man

You forget one of U2’s greatest songs: Two Hearts Beat As One. 😉

**

Well, a fellow U2 fan beat me to it 😃
Did I already post that? I really need to read all of my posts before replying to anything. 😃

U2 is great, though. Their songs are always great and the love songs aren’t lame, which is a trend a lot of love songs have.

(…)
Since the door is open…

Sister by 7 Seconds

*Please believe me, I’m on your side
Though I know I can’t feel what you do
Can’t see what you see
But my respect and love is deeper than you’ll
ever really know
And I know it may be hard for me
to ever really show
What’s here inside

Friend, sister, see
through hungry times we see the most
You’re my family,
I thank you for the time you chose
To be part of my life
You help me fight against the pain
I’ll see you on the other side

It never matters even when it’s strained
Together we can make the world seem like the
place it could be
And though the hate and anger come and goes
We’ll walk along this road
Down a path where walls fall over
And fall down upon our heads and wakes again

We gotta cross this crazy bridge again, yeah*

I love the tender lyrics set to hardcore.

Saw this post & had to reply. Surprised the 80’s fans haven’t beat me to mentioning “Heaven” by Bryan Adams or INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart”. There are a lot of good answers but I have to add a few. My husband & I are both music nuts so our idea of love songs isn’t limited to slow dances (think Tony Bennett’s “Rags to Riches” or “Caught up in You” by 38 Special) but I’ll keep it to slow dances here, as requested. Start with almost anything by Lighthouse (All in All, Blind, Only One, Spin, Out of Breath & so many more!). Enjoy, all!

Sideways by Citizen Cope is all about the feelings of love & may not be the most romantic lyrics but it’s one of the best songs in the world to slow dance to

Right Down the Line by Gerry Rafferty

Trik Turner’s Friends & Family

You Belong to Me is one of the best, especially the Patsy Cline or Jason Wade version (disclaimer, this was our wedding song so I’m awfully biased here)

You’re very welcome! I see that I posted the wrong link for the first song - the correct one is this:

And I thank you a lot for Type-O-Negative 👍 Love them to death, so to speak, since 1999 😃
Nice pun.

Pete was going to join the church before he died. Not sure if he did. He reportedly said, “I don’t think Mother Theresa and Adolf Hitler are going to the same place” and wanted to join the Church.

I saw them many times, back in the day, at L’amour in Brooklyn.
