There was one question which I got right, but I disagreed with the answer: The contraceptive question.
I have a sister with three children. Each time she had extreme toxcimia and preclampsia, and nearly died. In the fourth pregnancy she miscarried and nearly died. I remember that the first time she’d been given a 20% chance of survival, and I don’t think her odds ever improved even though she’d managed so far.
After the fourth pregnancy the doctors said that she CERTAINLY would die if she did this again, and there’s no way she could carry a child to term anyway. Her doctor said he would resign as her doctor if she got pregnant.
My sister then went to one older priest who said “It’s impermissible in all circumstances. You and your husband will have to abstain from sexual relations for the rest of your lives to be safe.” I can guarantee their marriage would not have survived that.
Then she went to a younger priest who said, “It’s a sin, but if you get the procedure done and come to confession, I’ll forgive you for it.”
I told her to go to her bishop for guidance. Her bishop approved getting her tubes tied and handed her a letter to that effect. By that time her husband went a got a vasectomy, telling her only afterwards… so the issue was moot.
My understanding is that bishops have leeway to make some pastoral decisions in cases were medical circumstances warrant it. I don’t think he would have put it in writing otherwise. From what I know it is not “Impermissible in ALL circumstances”.
If any demand to see the letter, or know which bishop did this… sorry. If he is in the wrong, I’m not going to help get him in trouble… because I still agree with his decision.
