Worst anime you've ever watched?

Hi everyone! So I know there are alot of Otak-Catholics (See what I did there?) around in the forums and I’ve been meaning to ask a question.

What was the WORST anime you’ve ever watched?

For me, it has to be ‘School Days’. I don’t care how realistic people say it is. It is absolute garbage and the ending was just so wicked. I can’t even… ughh…

Im spoiling it here because the day I recommend this to anyone is after I host a One Piece Marathon. (Which is never going to happen)

Kerokko Demetan, though I’ve only seen it in a French dub.

Terrible, unrelentingly bleak, angsty, brutal rubbish, which was marketed to unsuspecting children, many of whom I think ended up scarred for life. (I didn’t, but that was because I was born with the gift of mocking and pointing.)

I’d rather read Chick Tracts all day than watch any of it again.

I can’t think of all the anime I’ve watched, but Akira really didn’t do it for me… It’s been a while, so I might try rewatching it, but frankly, I thought it was utterly depressing, and for no real reason other than to be depressing.

However, biggest disappointment was Tsubasa, the Reservoir Chronicles. Started out promising, disintegrated into a non-story filled with sound and fury signifying nothing.

I had the opposite reaction to it XD I loved how they tied everything together… Though, the anime may be different from the manga, not sure, haven’t watched the anime, only read the manga.

That one where the one guy had spikey blue hair and eyes the size of soup plate, and where most of the characters looked like they could swallow a watermelon whole when they started shouting. Also, I think someone had a sword as tall as he was.

(Couldn’t resist - one of my good friends tried to get me interested in anime once, and it definitely didn’t work.)

The funny thing is, I can think of a member of my own family who’d probably say much the same thing.

I’m not an “anime fan” by any stretch, but I can understand its charms; I loved the space opera stuff as a boy, and I had a literally life-changing encounter with Princess Sarah 20 years later, so count me as an “interested friend”.

The absolute worst anime I can remember is “Violinist of Hamelin.” It wasn’t so much animation as it was freeze-frame drawings set to overdubbed voices and music, with a little bit of animation thrown in every episode just so they could call it “anime.”

Sadly, I also tried to watch the first episode of the new Rurouni Kenshin OAV – I was NOT impressed. Yes, the animation was top-notch (easily rivalling or exceeding the original episodes in quality), but the pacing was completely off, and the OAV was geared obviously for people who had already sat through the Kyoto Arc back in the late '90s. It alternately gave zero context as to what was going on (literally, they just plopped poor Kaoru, Sanosuke and Yahiko in the middle of the episode without giving a neophyte viewer any reason to know why they’re important to the plot) with lengthy infodumps to get the viewer to speed. It was from a writing standpoint a trainwreck.

I would say Yugioh!, but that’s actually so bad it’s good.

I think the anime I least like watching is a dumb one I watched as a kid called Viewtiful Joe.

The one that I got angriest watching was, hands down, Dragon Ball Z. (Though there is a lot I like about it, too- which is why it made me so angry! )

Now that I have access to the internet, I usually only watch stuff I like.

I could never get into Dragon Ball Z. It would take a whole season for Goku to throw a punch, or charge up to throw a punch. My 2 brother-in-laws loved it though.

That’s what made me so angry! (That and the fact that the characters got almost no development, along with everything Vegeta ever did. But the rare moments when planets blew up almost made up for it!)

School Days for me too although Seto no Hanayome comes close. And while FAR from being the worst seeing as it is actually very good, I think Cowboy Bebop is overrated (BOO! HISS!), and I think the same thing for Samurai Champloo, the first Kara no Kyoukai film and Perfect Blue. Also not liking the direction the new Hayate the Combat Butler anime is taking.

My gosh, the Shin Kyoto hen OVA is an INSULT to Rurouni Kenshin. What were they thinking, trying to fix something that isn’t broken?!

Do you watch anime in general realjulianne?

As for weird anime, I tried watching but dropped Gintama. Yes, watching random clips on you tube I laughed my head off but as a story, I don’t think I cans tand watching filler after filler. I’ll just stick to Hayate and watching random clips of it on you tube. And no, Gintama is NOT recommended if you’re a devout Catholic because it has a LOT of potty humor which is really not good for kids.

Oh, and in addition to seto no Hanayome and School Days, the other worst anime I have ever seen is Dokuro chan. I admit that i is a guilty pleasure of mine and the utterly stupid, idiotic, infantile humor does kill me laughing… but, I prefer watching it to something like South Park. At least it’s not mean spirited towards everyone nor does it really teach bad morals.

No, my younger son is into it and tries to make me watch it with him. There’s one he picked up that shows Jesus and Buddha as young adult roommates, and it’s actually quite funny and not blasphemous as I feared it would be.

He was watching “Squid Girl” and I couldn’t stand it. Some of what he watches is just weird, but the animation can be top-notch.

Yeah, I was talking about the hideously mutilated American version done by 4kids. On the rare occasions when I watched it as a kid (I wasn’t supposed to, since it had egyptian magic in it, but sometimes my cousins would watch an episode or two), I was alternately bored and horrified.

I watch that version now, and I realize that it’s hilarious. Though only if you skip through the boring parts. The way they censored everything… The way the dub voice actors talk… The way the plot never makes any sense- it’s just bad. But they always take it so seriously that it becomes funny instead of terrible. It’s so earnest, in fact, that I occasionally find myself taking it seriously, too.

I’ll give it one thing- the American theme song is awesome. Best minute of the show, every time.

Yugioh 5D’s made me sad- it looked pretty awesome for the first half a season or so, but it quickly went downhill.
