That’s okay. Of course there are good, mediocre and bad Bond movies - if you’re a fan, that is.

I particularly enjoyed an exchange that he and Bond have while Bond is a guest (and soon to be prey) on Scaramanga’s island in which Scaramanga says they’re much alike except that he’s richer and Bond replies that when he kills it’s on the express orders of his government and the people he kills are themselves killers.

If Sean Connery had played in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service , Tracy Bond would be alive today.
💔
You haven’t read the novel, right? Ian Fleming’s novel, that is, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The death of Tracy was an integral part of a story arc in the novels.

As I said, it’s so sad. I’ve read all of the Fleming Bond novels multiple times, but OHMSS only a few times because it’s so sad.

However, I must say that Bond escaping Blofeld by skiing down the mountain is one of the most riveting, thrilling, terrifying reads in fiction! Can’t stop reading it, and the conclusion of the ski race down is so exciting, such a relief! I think that anyone who isn’t convinced of James Bond’s amazingness will definitely be convinced after reading this scene in the novel! I don’t think the movie captured it at all.

I was being facetious, but yeah.

I read it, but it was so-o-oo long ago I really don’t remember – I spent a summer of my childhood/adolescence reading all the James Bond from the library.

I may have to re-visit.

I tried reading ‘Live and Let Die’ once but couldn’t get past the ‘Negro’ dialect that the Harlem characters spoke in. Not for politically correct reasons but because it slowed down the reading process immeasurably.
Oh, read it!

This is a great story that shows the friendship between James Bond and Felix Leiter. And even though Bond doesn’t make wisecracks, Mr. Big does–“He disagreed with something that ate him.” That part of the story is so…icky! But it turns out OK, although Leiter loses some limbs.

The villain is truly “Big,” and the highly-intelligent Solitaire is a worthy companion for Bond.

And the world of voodoo is so interesting!

Best to read all the Bond novels in chronological order.

I love the movie so will have to give the novel another try - thanks

I always thought Moonraker was rather corny, but as a rule, I could watch a Bond film anytime. The new turn they are making might put me off though.

How about ‘A View To A Kill’? I watched it last night which is what put me in mind of the question in the OP. The mood of the film didn’t even seem like a Bond film; in other words it lacked the glamour one normally associates with a Bond film.

@UpUpAndAway I’m guessing he means the one with Woody Allen.
IMHO, “View To a Kill” has a lot of glamour that’s associated with a Bond film in the first half of the movie. There are other things where the movie comes up short (plot, the age of Roger Moore, mediocre Bond girl, etc.) but the lack of glamour isn’t one of them, IMHO.

Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure I have not seen a bad Ward Bond film.

I’m going to break this down by actor.
Connery
Worst: You Only Live Twice
Best: From Russia With Love

Lazenby…oh wait, OHMSS is decent. Pretty middle of the road Bond movie.

Moore:
Worst: A View to a Kill
Best: The Spy Who Loved Me

Dalton: I like The Living Daylights slightly more than License to Kill

Brosnan:
Worst: Die Another Day
Best: Goldeneye

Craig
Worst: Quantum of Solace
Best: Casino Royale
My list would be exactly the same except I’d put Diamonds are Forever as Connery’s worst. I found it quite forgettable. I enjoyed You Only Live Twice.
Well… I haven’t seen Quantum or Solace, but I think that when I do, it will be my least favorite of Craig’s based on what I’ve heard about it.

To be fair to YOLT it’s the Connery one I have seen the least. I’m pretty familiar with DaF. Maybe I’ll rewatch the two and come to a different conclusion. Book-wise. YOLT is much better than DaF.

Quantum is not great for Craig but much better than some of the other actors worst movies. It works okay as a coda to Casino but fails as a stand-alone movie.

I think I’m the only person who likes Diamonds are Forever. The title song is great, the bad guys are memorably weird and the Las Vegas locale, while it should de-glamorize Bond (cf A View To A Kill above) just makes it stand out more from the other Connery entries in the series (for me, anyway).

Must be quick to doze off as it’s one of the shortest Bond movies.

I think it more has to do with me finding it boring than it having to do with length of the film. It’s no “Man with the Golden Gun” or “From Russia with Love”.

You are not alone.

And I was gonna say, to all those who seem undecided between You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever, ya gotta give it to Dame Shirley Bassey! ❤️
