Really? EWTN and/or Raymond Arroyo are saying this? Link please. This doesn’t seem like a very Catholic thing to do, focusing on the negative and singling out an individual. How about we leave this kind of thing for the secular gossip rags?
This is a link to the specific blog commentary of Mr. Arroyo’s, Bruised Reed.

I was Evangelical Protestant for 47 years before converting to Catholicism.

Evangelical Protestants have a tendency to jump on what I called “bandwagons”–rallying behind the latest celeb (author, singer, actor, politician, artist, athlete, etc.) who appears to be helping spread the Gospel of Christ.
Why do they do this? I think Catholics do this too but to a lesser degree. Maybe because we have the Pope, people like Mother Teresa and we don’t need to make icons of secular celebrities as much.
The bandwagons roll along while more and more Christians jump on board, and then the bandwagon either slows to a halt, or crashes, or goes over the cliff. I think the Miley Cyrus bandwagon went over the cliff spectacularly.
I have to agree. That image is spot on. :clapping:

It would be hard to beat Miley for the year. Maybe Macklemore, Ga ga. Bieber…

I think Catholics do this just as much as anyone!!! Perhaps more!

Sometimes we do it in our own pews or with our clergy. Like, Fr. Corapi or A Catholic politician. Sometimes we do it with a movie star. Or a sports team (ND) we glob onto anything remotely Catholic.

I’ll agree with the poster who said Robin Thicke. It bothered me that so many people were so quick to criticize Miley for her performance at the MTV awards, yet there was hardly any mention of Robin’s part in the whole thing. And Blurred Lines was disgusting, although to be fair…it was tame compared to much of the popular rap music coming out these days.

In any case, we should be offering prayers for these people and hope that they will turn to God and become better role models.
Oh I am I’m total agreement with this ^^^^

Miley is my pick. I have three girls that have grown up watching her as Hannah Montanna and now I have to be afraid they will see her nude videos on youtube, good grief we are falling fast!

Or as my wife calls here, Lady Ca-Ca. 😃
I think that Lady GaGa was not in fore front of news like Miley Cyrus was. Lady GaGa was raised in a Catholic home and went to Catholic schools. I think her along with Miley need our prayers. It is one thing to say these two along with a bunch of others say and do things that are clearly not good role models, don’t buy their music or support them but they need our prayers most of all.

She demonstrated the usual tragedy of childhood stardom. Too much, too fast and going too far. I was fortunate that I had younger boys during the time when the show was on. Never watched it and never bought into the hype of a wholesome girl because I thought with her as with other child stars that it would not last and the bad behavior would follow as soon as they became older and on their own.

True, his stuff isn’t as explicit as some of the other rap out there. But most of the really offensive rap you have to seek out on certain stations, whereas Robin’s song is played everywhere (malls, grocery stores) on practically every station. (At least where I live.) Which is why I have more of a problem with it I guess. It seems more harmful because it’s reaching so many more people.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just California(I hope so, lol) ,but I hear rap everywhere! My high school regularly played inappropriate rap songs during our pep rallies and at lunch time. We heard rap on the bus on the way to school. Even the censored versions still tend to be pretty graphic-all about pimping, drugs, sex etc. 😦

I still remember kids in middle school walking around singing “Big Pimpin” and a really graphic Ludacris song that I forget the name of. It’s unfortunate that so much popular music today is so disgusting.

That Ludacris song you’re thinking of is ‘What’s Your Fantasy?’ It was really popular when I was in late middle school/early high school too. I hadn’t thought of it in years until last month when I picked my niece up from her winter formal only to hear that song being played. The overprotective aunt in me became decidedly uncool for about 3 minutes, but then my husband calmed me down and reminded me not to embarrass my niece. But I was shocked and angry that such a disgusting and degrading song had that kind of staying power.

I’m also going to vote for Robin Thicke.

Everyone was so upset about Miley, but lets calm down for a second. She is a 21 year old girl who has had a very difficult life being in the spotlight for most of her childhood. She put on a skimpy outfit and danced on stage like many young women her age dance in clubs and bars. No, what she did was not classy in any way, but she was acting a lot like a typical 21 year old young woman.

Robin Thicke is a 36 year old MARRIED man who was dancing with a 21 year old girl as though he was a free man in his early 20’s at a night club. No husband should be acting like that with another woman regardless of his age, but at 36, that was just exploitative.

Maybe, or I’m just oblivious. 😛 I’m sure they do play that stuff here, I just seem to hear more Katy Perry/Miley Cyrus type music than rap wherever I go…and techno…a lot of techno.

I know what you mean about pop songs though. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard a song and been like, “Oh this is catchy I like it.” And then I listen to the lyrics closer and I’m like, “Oh yuck is he talking about what I think he is?!” It gets depressing.
