You mean beautiful story, beautiful scenery, or beautiful morality?… and beautiful movies like Titantic get attacked on a Catholic board…

I loved High Plains Drifter (and pretty much every other Eastwood western I’ve seen). I just didn’t think the rape, hell imagery, murder, or arson would go over really well here, but hey, glad someone else enjoyed itWhen I read great flicks like High Plains Drifter and beautiful movies like Titantic get attacked on a Catholic board, I become aware of the tendency to fall into Jesus Camp evangelical type mania here.
Yes, Kenneth Anger, Stigmata, Pedro Almodavar, and a bunch more.

Now most would say that your remark is uncharitable. No, it’s just your opinion. I have read many of CathCentrists posts…and find him/her to be right out there with it. Expressing an opinion on a movie doesn’t cause one to betray their faith.SHAME ON YOU FOR BETRAYING YOUR FAITH
Well I justify my comment based on what he said to me not a compliation of all his previous posts. He didn’t just express his opinion on the movie, he insulted me by saying that I am an evangelical because I uphold CATHOLIC teaching regarding sexuality. Now most would say that your remark is uncharitable. Having described the movie Titanic as you did in your original post and your second post…I have to ask if the sex scenes and nudity bothered you so much…why didn’t you leave the theater, (or if you rented the DVD, press the STOP button)?
And your use of the word “sucks”…hmmmm…interesting choice.
“Sucks” is a shortening of “that sucks d***” or “that sucks the big one”. I can remember when even the shortened version was considered an expletive and not used in polite conversation.Well I justify my comment based on what he said to me not a compliation of all his previous posts. For you to assume a sexual connotation with me using the word “sucks” tells me that you are unfamiliar with contemporary slang.
I read a Kevin Smith interview when the movie was coming out. He actually is a faithful Catholic and threw in those heretical comments and such, not to degrade the Church, but to show how some Catholics are (and do many things against Church teaching, including priests). I think one has to understand Smith’s warped thinking to “get” his movies and their messages, unfortuately, many in the general population don’t which is where the problem was with this movie (as well as some of his other movies). One has to realize that in his movies he always, ALWAYS seems to take the exagerated approach of every aspect, theme and character (Mall Rats is a great example of the exageration). I would never recommend Dogma to a non-Catholic, but one who knows the teaching of the Church and is solid in their faith could watch this without losing their way. And just like you, this movie caused me to look deeper into the teachings of the Church because I knew there were so many incorrect statements in the movie.Yes, Dogma tops my list as well. However, it worked out for good, and helped me to re-examine my faith and become a serious devout Catholic. I was pretty much a cafeteria Catholic, though I wouldn’t have called myself that. One scene in the movie that stood out was when one of the main characters – a Catholic who worked at an abortion clinic – went to Mass. I don’t remember specifically what was said at the Mass, but they were all mumbling and I think something was said (in the Creed or somewhere) which was offensive and heretical and no one at the Mass even noticed or cared. Sometimes a good slap in the face will do wonders, although I’m pretty sure that effect wasn’t what Kevin Smith intended. He wanted me to laugh, but instead I cried.
It IS the exception, i think. At least it is kinda surprising that a public Marxist, Atheist and homosexual directed a film that many people consider as one of the best portrayals of Jesus’ life.Haven’t seen that, but it seems to be the exception![]()
You know, I see your point. But, I have a friend who was eventually drawn to the Catholic Church by this movie. It fueled his fascination with the Church and sent him on a journey to learn more. Just proves that God can and does use everything for our good.Stigmata. Blah, icky, gross. I need a vomiting smilie about right now.
ROTF!SHAME ON YOU FOR BETRAYING YOUR FAITH
Yes, fair enoughGiven the things I’ve seen people here objecting to, I think ‘most’ is a safe bet, if not ‘all’
I was thinking specifically of Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead… I think you get the idea![]()
Have fun, it’s greatYes, fair enoughBoth Blue Velvet and Eraserhead are probably more ‘weird’ than specifically immoral, though I’m not trying to approach them theologically at the moment, where I’m sure they have all manner of problems.
However, you’ve reminded me that I still have to watch Mulholland Drive. I bought the DVD years ago and still haven’t watched the thing. This weekend seems a good idea

I assume you object to the dialogue when “The Man with No Name” orders the townfolk to paint all of the town’s buildings red (as in blood, blood guilt)…
High Plains Drifter (oh Clint, how could you?)
I don’t object to it, like I said I think it’s a great movieI assume you object to the dialogue when “The Man with No Name” orders the townfolk to paint all of the town’s buildings red (as in blood, blood guilt)
Actually I looked at the story as a slightly different metaphor: the Stranger is Satan, Lago a corner of Hell. And the devil has come in disguise to remind the people in Lago that he is their ruler, and that no matter how evil they are or have been, he’s worse.Almost the entire town (excepting one woman who was held back, and one “Little person” who was toofrightened to do anything but hide) atched and approved of the town sheriff being whipped to death by company thungs to cover up an embezzelment scam. The MWNN was strngly implied to be an angel (of Death?) to bring harsh justice to the town–to let them know they crime they participated in had not been overlooked.
I agree greatly, but I would emphasize any of the American Pie movies, Not another teen movie (the Jock’s sister sticks the cruxific of a rosary in her mouth in a sexual way), and most of all, EuroTrip. In Eurotrip they are visiting the Vatican and go into a restricted area, and are messing with the popes stuff. They burn something in a fire and it puts out white smoke, and the guy stumbles out with the popes hat on with I think a curtain on. It shows that he is “the new pope.” Later, him and a girl he meets have sex in a confessional while an old lady is trying to give a confession. Its so full of filth.Pretty much any teenage movie made in the past ten years, I’d say.
