We all list the best movies that we like and there is a good variety among them and having threads like them are good as they give a chance to express what movies really move us.

Well sometimes a really bad movie can have a profound effect too as it can clearly show what is wrong with us or society in general. So here goes my movie(s) that I hate the most:
  1. Titanic. This movie sucks for sooo many reasons. One, obviously is the cheap nudity which it has. Rose’s posing is as artistic as a Playboy centerfold posing . Two, the sexual intercourse scene. Three, Rose’s mother is an incredibly selfish character as to pressure her daughter to marry a rich man so she can have her comfortable lifestyle is just terrible. Fourth and perhaps very subtly you see Rose’s fiance (sorry I forget his name) is portrayed as the church going Christian yet he is the abusive man.

As gorgeous artistically as Gone With the Wind is - Scarlett and Rhett both tend to be incredibly self-centred and pretty vile and despicable characters all round - Rhett only slightly less so. While the good characters (Ashley and Melanie) are presented as really sappy and wishy-washy.

Jaws 4: The Revenge, because it’s SO bad it could actually make a good Catholic consider euthanasia! 😛

Kevin Smith is a genius that exposes a lot of modern day thought and situaitons through sterotypes. If anythign it should make us think of how we are pertraying ourselves to the outside world. And i acutally quite enjoy the pro star wras propaganda of the movies lol

Finally, something I can really help out with! 😛 (Somebody make a worst music for Catholics thread, and I’ll be delighted to assist there too 😃 )

Here’s a quick list of stuff we non-Catholics would prefer you didn’t spoil our theater-going experiences of:

Anything by Kenneth Anger
Anything by John Waters
Anything by Takashi Miike
Anything by Park Chan-Wook
Anything by David Cronenberg
Anything by Pier Paolo Pasolini (especially Salo)
Lots of Federico Fellini
Most of David Lynch

you know, this list is too long for 2:30am, and it’s only the directors… here’s a few more I ahem dis-recommend.

The Crying Game
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Boys Don’t Cry
High Plains Drifter (oh Clint, how could you?)
Repo Man

Everything else that’s been posted so far I think sucks anyway (except I liked Clerks and Gone With the Wind), so go ahead and hate on that. But offensive? Those are nothing 😉

What about Pasolini’s The Gospel according to St. Matthew? 😃

Most of David Lynch
Most? Purely out of interest. which go on which side of the ‘acceptable’ line? 🙂

I’m a big fan of most of Lynch, especially Twin Peaks. His only film I didn’t enjoy at all was Wild At Heart, though Dune was rather a mess too.

Given the things I’ve seen people here objecting to, I think ‘most’ is a safe bet, if not ‘all’ 😉

I was thinking specifically of Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead… I think you get the idea 😉

Guess you won’t be buying the ‘limited edition’ DVD.
  1. Yes, the ‘drawing scene’ was silly.
  2. The ‘sexual intercourse’ showed absolutely nothing. You just knew from the steamy window what was going on.
  3. Yes, Rose’s mother was all that but that is a fair depiction of the class conscience society of 1912.
  4. Hockley was abusive but I do not recall anywhere in the movie where he is depicted as a ‘church going Christian’ unless you mean the scene where all the 1st class passengers were in a Sunday service meeting singing.
I thought the last part of the movie was awesome! The power of modern technology enabled one to sit in a theater and actually feel the terror of the sinking ship.

When I think of terrible movies, I think of anything with gratuitous sex and violence and no particular story line.
There are so many like that.

Pretty much any teenage movie made in the past ten years, I’d say.

Stigmata. Blah, icky, gross. I need a vomiting smilie about right now.

Sideways
(Almost) everything by Kevin Smith, e.g. Dogma
Yes, Dogma tops my list as well. However, it worked out for good, and helped me to re-examine my faith and become a serious devout Catholic. I was pretty much a cafeteria Catholic, though I wouldn’t have called myself that. One scene in the movie that stood out was when one of the main characters – a Catholic who worked at an abortion clinic – went to Mass. I don’t remember specifically what was said at the Mass, but they were all mumbling and I think something was said (in the Creed or somewhere) which was offensive and heretical and no one at the Mass even noticed or cared. Sometimes a good slap in the face will do wonders, although I’m pretty sure that effect wasn’t what Kevin Smith intended. He wanted me to laugh, but instead I cried.

I know that the sex scene didn’t show nudity but it was clear what was going on and it was more than just a steamed up window.

As for Hockley (thanks for knowing his name), yes it was that scene that made me make that comment on him being a “church going Christian”

Yes there are other terrible movies but I guess the reason why I really chose this one was because how some people, especially Catholics hold it in such HIGH REGARD. I am aghast and amazed that they would. If they thought of it as just another sappy romance movie then I probably wouldn’t write about it.

When I read great flicks like High Plains Drifter and beautiful movies like Titantic get attacked on a Catholic board, I become aware of the tendency to fall into Jesus Camp evangelical type mania here.

Yes, Kenneth Anger, Stigmata, Pedro Almodavar, and a bunch more.
