I appreciated it only because it spawned such a great Weird Al parody.
Just noticed this oneâŚyes this was another I would sing as a child thinking it was about someone roller skating.Brand New Pair Of Roller Skates- Melanie
I was too old for it too but musically it rocked far more than anything else on the scene at the time.Joe_5859:![]()
âSmells Like Teen Spiritâ is a song I can truly say I couldnât stand and still canât. I did like some other songs of Nirvanaâs later on, but I simply could not understand why the fuss over this stupid band singing dirgey stuff about high school. I was too old for it and all the other songs of that era where teens whined about their dysfunctional home lives. There were some Nirvana songs I liked, but at the time I kind of viewed them as supplanters
That one became a favorite joke of my fatherâs. He thought of âtouchâ as slang for âask for some money/ ask for a loanâ, as in âI put the touch on him for 5 dollarsâ so heâd be at dinner saying to my mom, âI have to touch you in the morning for 5 dollars, hahahaâ I was annoyed at him because being a tween, I thought it was a really romantic song and he was ruining it.Has no mentioned âTouch Me in the Morningâ by Diana Ross?
It certainly seems that way doesnât it?There must have been a lot of people having affairs in the 70s.
The point is, it was about the kids. I was in my mid-20s and didnât really give a hang about somebody whoâd been raised by hippies and was singing about high school.kids were bored.
By that point I had been listening exclusively to college and where available âalternativeâ non-college radio for about 10 years. I discovered it in high school (actually my friend discovered it and turned me on to it because I was extremely sick of AOR format radio which played the same songs over and over). I was a record geek/ music snob/ hipper than thou, what you call it, except my guilty pleasure was that I did like glam rock because the guys were cute and GnR was a good band. There was tons of all different stuff at the low end of the dial to listen to. I realize most teenagers who were glued to the MtV were not going to go hunting for weird new radio stuff in those days though, so I donât fault them. We all have to realize at some point that we have gotten old and that was about the point that I realized I had aged out of a demographic.what else was there to listen to back then?
When that came out, a group of girls from my all-girls Catholic high school played the record and acted it out at the school talent show. I thought it was about the funniest thing I had ever seen in my life. (I was 15.)By the way, I donât believe any Catholic poster her hasnât mentioned âOnly the Good Die Youngâ by Billy Joel. A real slap at Catholic moral values.
Certainly not my favorite either. After all a guy whoâd toss Christie Brinkley under the bus for a yearâs supply of the Devilâs Dandruff canât be all that swift.joeybaggz:![]()

My mother was not amused. She hated that song. She hated Billy Joel forever because of that song. The year before she died (like 35 years later) she was still expressing to me her animosity towards Mr. Joel.
