My DJ is my lil sister’s ex-boyfriend. I know his parents quite well, and my father has already provided him with a “if you play the following songs, I will personally injury you” list.

I can’t think of anything horrible, but I am sure I will think of some later.

“Baby Got Back” by Jonathan Coulton
“The Pill” by Loretta Lynn
“Run For Your Life” by The Beatles

2nd story

The DJ at my older brothers wedding got the banned song list and the request list mixed up and played every single banned song.
It is really that easy to confuse songs that should not be played at a wedding with songs that should be??
3rd story
My wife is Portuguese and at every Portuguese wedding I’ve been to, including my own, they play a song whose refrain translates:
Can I smell your codfish Maria
Luckily, those are the only words I understand.
Goes back to the medieval European tradition - wedding songs, especially among those below the ranks of the nobility, were full of allusions to the wedding night (yay).

I actually witnessed the bride and groom dancing to “Back that A** Up”.

Pure Class.

I recently went to a very nice reception in the burbs where they played Kanye West’s “Gold digger.”

I knew I’d think of another!

I don’t know who sings it, but it has to be the worst “slam” song against a woman and I have no idea what possessed the bride to allow this song to be played as the couple’s first dance. It’s the song, “Being With You” which talks about how the guy’s friends don’t like his girl and he says:

I don’t care if they start to avoid me
I don’t care what they do
I don’t care about anything else but
Being with you, being with you

Then the last verse says:

People can change, they always do
Haven’t they noticed the changes in you?
Or can it be that like love I am blind…

I mean, isn’t THAT romantic? :dts: Your husband’s friends hate you and now even HE’S wondering if maybe they aren’t seeing something he can’t see? I think this has to be one of the worst “love” songs ever written!

And yes, please, PLEASE, let’s ban “The Chicken Dance” from weddings! Along with “The Hokey Pokey”, “The Macarena” and “Mambo No. 5”!:gopray2:

Just gotta say that when I went through the list of songs not to play, I was trying to review them with my mom.

The usual suspects came up-
me- “definitely not Baby Got Back”
Mom- “What’s wrong with that one? It doesn’t sound bad.”

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE by the Police - that is surprisingly common, but really shouldn’t be, for a bride & groom.

Another one which would probably be inappropriate is the Funkadelic classic STANDING ON THE VERGE OF GETTING IT ON.

Please don’t forget the Electric Slide :crossrc:

🙂 I just participated in a wedding this weekend where there were 2 songs on the “banned list” and that was one of them. I’ll have to think and see if I can remember the other.
We didn’t want “YMCA” at ours, but the DJ got so many requests that he waited until we were out of the room with the photographer to play it.

The Chicken Dance has been a family tradition, but it’s not like I couldn’t live without it. It was played at ours.

And did you know that you can do the Macarena to the Imperial Death March from Star Wars? 😃

I can already see my “Star Wars” junkie son’s wedding reception… the bride wearing the Princess Leia hair-do, my son wearing a light saber at his side…

Nothing says an “Italian-American” wedding like the Godfather Waltz (my cousin’s wedding) Also The Lady Is A Tramp isn’t a good one but is usually among the Sinatra songs played during the dinner.

Two more (by hearsay… I wasn’t at either wedding);
  1. the DJ played two songs that the bridal couple dedicated to each other… the bride’s song to the groom was “I Am Woman” (and supposedly he went and changed his from “I Pledge My Love” to something else, but I’m not sure to what, although we could probably come up with some ideas!)
  2. the couple had hired a country band to play for the wedding reception (no singing, all instrumental) and the couple got up to waltz, presumably to Anne Murray’s “Could I Have This Dance”, but it didn’t take long for the explosive snickers to burst out among the crowd and the couple to give the fiddler a withering glare. He was playing “The Last Cheater’s Waltz”.

And I’m also a Star Wars fanatic!

Oh my goodness…

EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL DANCE THEY PLAY THESE SONGS ABOUT 3-4 TIMES EACH except for Hokey Pokey and Chicken Dance which are (most of the time ) only once.
I am so SICK of Macarena, Mambo No. 5, and ugh the Electric Slide!

They also play YMCA at least twice.

I’d probably puke if they played these at my wedding. That is… if I haven’t already puked or passed out from nervousness… 😛
