**A new study, see Google News 2/17/2018, now finds that most humans will actually be happy if their home planet is visited by aliens. Speaking about it, Arizona State Assistant Professor of Psychology Michael Varnum said that people would be pretty upbeat if they came face to face with life outside Earth. To explore how people might react, scientists had them read news reports about a number of potential alien discoveries. Their reactions were very positive, the researchers found.
I can’t believe that any of the religious believers that I know would be happy at all. I think those who will have the hardest time handling the discovery of intelligent alien life will be people with the same fundamental religious beliefs as I learned growing up with 12 years of Catholic grade and high school. They won’t be able to handle it if their quaint religious beliefs are challenged and their ancient texts are shown to be most likely myths and legends with little basis in fact. I personally have considered this possibility for years and it disturbs me very much.
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we learned that we’ve been monitored by an older alien and completely non religious species all along. In fact it might go a long way to explain some of the stories in the Bible about angels and other encounters with divinities, not to mention tribal stories about space brothers and sky gods.
Once they discovered we were sentient beings as opposed to the wild animals around us, they may have invented religion with its Heaven and Hell to tame our animalistic tendencies. True wild non-sentient animals have no need for a Heaven or Hell.
Do you suppose anyone in the upper levels of the Church is considering the possible traumatic effect that such revelation could have on the majority of its believers?
