Would Burt Reynolds's career have been much different if

…he hadn’t posed nude for Cosmopolitan magazine in the early 1970s? To see what I’m getting at, check out this video.

Never heard that before, don’t think it chZnged anything though!

I doubt it. It was just one more publicity stunt that got some attention for short period of time and fizzled out the next month. Thanks for the link, but I had a roommate who had that picture up in her in room and it still grosses me out. 😛

Somewhat tangentially, my elderly Vietnamese neighbor often sports a tee shirt emblazoned with the timeless advice of: Row faster! I hear banjos.

I remember the naked Burt centerfold. I didn’t find it particularly sexy (I like my men with some clothes on) or Burt particularly sexy (too much mustache), but I thought he was often a good actor.
It boggles my mind that he’s a wizened little old man now.

I remember it too. Likewise did not find sexy (though I do love a good mustache). . .
Can’t understand how he got so old when I’m still as young and gorgeous as I was back in those days (well I will say that the cataracts/floaters and bad vision might have something to do what that perception).

Burt Reynolds is now 81 years old, so I’m sure his life could have gone in different directions in so very many, many ways. While this one decision was not the most moral one he could have made, it is not possible to do anything but speculate on whether or not this choice actually changed his career path at all. It appears he regrets the decision, which makes sense to me, but who can truly know if it benefitted or detracted from his career?

I was in my early 20’s when he did the nude centerfold. I remember it well! 😃

I just remember Burt being really cocky back then. I doubt if Pretty Woman would have been the hit it was with Burt or Terms of Endearment.

I never really saw him as much of an actor - he was handsome, sexy and funny.
The little video did not mention his two girlfriends Dinah Shore and Sally Fields who were a big part of his life.

He is an elderly man now. I am not sure I would want him to teach acting classes.
He got the roles on his looks, more than acting.

I think you are spot on 👍👍

I too remember the centerfold. Burt was never going to be a great actor, but he was handsome, sexy and funny. I am wondering if the pic actually helped his career. What did P. T. Barnum say, “There is no such thing as bad publicity”, so any publicity is good publicity? Since Reynolds is an actor and used to be a fairly well known one, he actually has had more than his 15 minutes of fame. But, I don’t really see how anyone can ever truly know if the pic helped or hurt his career. FWIW, I remember liking him in “Evening Shade,” though I cannot begin to tell you what it was about other than small town Americana and it was a comedy.

I never even saw Evening Shade. I actually saw very few of his movies. He seemed really conceited I thought. I always wonder what happened to the son he and Loni
Anderson adopted. I thought they were married longer than 5 years. Loni Anderson
really dropped off the radar.

Well, if I remember correctly, my ‘cousins’ Adam and Eve went nude at one time!😃 I guess that changed everything when they decided to go around wearing fig leaves.:D;)

Well, I know I watched it and I think I remembering liking “Evening Shade,” though I don’t think Burt was the draw. I think I liked the entire cast (Michael Jeter, Hal Holbrook, Ossie Davis, Charles Durning and others) and found it gentle, fun humor about a small town and the people who lived there. I agree that the young Burt seemed conceited and “slick” but I think he may have mellowed by the time he was on “Evening Shade.”

I say “I think” because when I think of the movie “Brave” now all I can think of is a ridiculous plot twist in that movie and it is just so out there, that that is my entire focus and I really dislike it. But, my kids tell me I liked it when it came out. I don’t know if they liked it and I just didn’t want to diss their movie and found aspects that I liked to focus on (it was a visually beautiful movie with a good musical score too and I really wanted to like the lead character because she so visually reminded me of my daughter) or if my opinion has changed drastically, so… I just have to put that out there for the sake of full disclosure and don’t wish to derail this thread. 😃 I guess I’m trying to say that my memory isn’t as good as I would like:D.

Evening Shade did have a good cast it sounds like.

The original “Smokey and the Bandit” was funny. It was even funnier when I was in Germany and flipping channels on a hotel TV and found a version of it showing that was completely dubbed in German. The German accents they selected for some of the characters were hilarious.

That’s was great show! Forgot all about that!

I used to love whenever Burt Reynolds was on Johnny Carson. Very funny. 👍 Especially if Dom DeLuise was also on!

Here is another Burt Reynolds obscurity I just remembered: Back before he was famous, he played a pilot who crashed in the Everglades on an episode of the TV show “Gentle Ben” about a little boy and his large pet bear. I was a big fan of “Gentle Ben” as a child, or at least the parts that showed the bear and the airboat.

I watched that show too. I think the child in the show was Clint Howard, Ron’s brother. I have a vague recollection of the episode you mentioned, but only because you mentioned it, lol!
