I feel I know the answer already, but I have family who attend non-denominational churches and believe their churches were started by the pastors who were guided by the Holy Spirit.

Respectfully, I ask, would or could the Holy Spirit ever guide anyone to start a church when scripture, 2 Timothy 4:3,4 specifically, warns against it?

Just curious; is this family formerly Catholic?

I am in the same boat. 😦

What I have noticed is that former Catholics abandon their Faith on the slightest of pretexts, although sometimes there are Marital issues involved (probably more often than not.)

Anyhoo, they embrace their non-denominational church with a blind adherence and devotion that NEVER existed while they were Catholic. And they are ADAMANT in rejecting anything a Catholic would have to say.

On the other hand, if these are life-long Protestants, they may consider your arguments with a certain degree of impartiality.

Good Luck! 👍

I am non denominational so I’ll share my perspective. The Holy Spirit through the prophets dictated Scripture. That being said it doesn’t make sense that the Holy Spirit would be bound by scripture sense He’s the one who wrote it for “our instruction”. As an example God made time (presumably) but He is not bound by it because He is the one who made it, therefore His authority is greater than it. God/Holy Spirit cannot make anything that greater then Himself because he is the utmost.

That being said there are many that abuse this authority and claim outlandish things, citing the Holy Spirit as the director of whatever action/teaching they are undertaking (As there was in the days of the apostles, see Jude). These men will bear their judgement. From my perspective an unction from the Holy Spirit to do or teach something should 1. Not contradict Scripture and 2. Align with the character and qualities of the Holy Spirit and of the wisdom found in Christ as demonstrated in the Scriptures.

The scriptures are to point to Him who is all in all, He who is found both within and without the Book, it is our instruction not our law book, if some abuse that then again they will bear their own judgement.

In regards to the 2 Timothy scripture I see Paul warning Timothy about the “quality” of teaching, that it would turn into man pleasing rather than what is True. Paul was preaching before he was sanctioned by the Apostles to do so (Acts 9:20) That being said I am not about to deny the mess of protestantism/non denominationalism because it’s bad. Every man is doing what is right in their own eyes because they have shunned the authority over them (thanks Luther 😒) and from that have taken free reign to do what that 2 Timothy scripture says.

I typed this on my phone so please excuse any typos

“A divine inspiration cannot ask us to do something that contradicts what the Word of God teaches and asks of us. This means not the Word of God as compiled by each individual’s fantasy and interpretation, but Holy Scripture as transmitted and explained by the teaching authority of the Church. For example, a divine inspiration cannot ask me to commit acts that the Church considers immoral. In the same way, true inspirations always go in the direction of a spirit of obedience to the Church.”

The spirit leads people to the church in different ways. I converted in 2011 and was Protestant my whole life. The spirit led me to the Catholic Church. God has a plan for all of us and works through every situation.

If this conflict occurs, then it is either 1) Not scripture or 2) Not the Holy Spirit. There appears to be very little testing of the spirits in recent centuries, as John admonishes in his first letter. Worldly spirits wait to lead astray, yet do not reveal their true nature. How else to explain the rampant division in Christianity - among all who claim to follow the Spirit of unity?

2 thessalonians…

11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

No, we were Lutheran until I was 9 or 10. Then my parents and two other couples decided to start a church.

We are always respectful of each other, although my tongue hurts after leaving from biting it so much.

I think people leave the church because of the promise of easy salvation, among other reasons like the ones you stated.

Thanks for your thoughtful answer and consideration on this topic. I like your take on 2 Timothy 4:3,4. And welcome to CAF! Also, I didn’t see any typos.😀

Bookcat-
Thanks for the link. I’ll look into buying the book.

I can relate to what you are saying. I think of all the Catholics I knew when I was a kid and I am pretty sure our paths were meant to cross.

That is more of an end times teaching, but I see what you mean.
