Would I be committing a sin to leave my IUD in?

Well sorry but I have always told him these things in particular because I have been sexually active with him in the past.
Understood. Part of your new commitment to chastity would be to not engage in immodest conversations. Chastity is more than just not having intercourse, it is changing the way you interact with people of the opposite gender.

Other reasons to get rid of it:

If you have the hormonal kind, it’s like being on the pill, so you can get moodiness, headaches, breakthrough bleeding, cramping, weight gain, plus scary stuff like blood clots.

Even if it’s not the hormonal kind, it makes the womb inhospitable by irritating it, and possibly causing a constant, long-term low-grade infection. That, to me, is the scariest thing.

All true but none of these very good reasons to remove the IUD negate the priest’s response. The question was “is it sinful?” not “is it good for Holly’s health and well being?”.

As I recall, Holly asked for other, less religious, more practical answers that might be more persuasive to her friend. That’s what I was responding to.

Hi everyone. Back in December of 2008, I had an IUD put in while I was away from the Church. The reason being that I had a best friend who I was sexually active with. Well, my best friend and I have agreed to remain chaste from now on. However, we have not remained chaste all the time in the past. We are firmly committed to remaining chaste now. Anyway, my best friend told me he would not support me getting the IUD removed and that he thinks I should leave it in just in case I find another guy who I wish to be sexually active with. He told me he would be very angry with me if i get it removed. He feels like he is protecting me because I have mental problems that would make having a child very difficult for me. So, he feels like he is protecting me in a sense from getting pregnant by threatening to be very angry with me if I get the IUD removed. However, we did agree to remain chaste. So, I am kind of stuck with keeping the IUD even though I don’t want it. My priest told me that it is not a sin for me to keep the IUD in so long as I am remaining chaste. Do you agree with what the priest said or would I be committing a sin by leaving the IUD in regardless of whether I am chaste or not? 🤷
i don’t agree w/ your priest or with corki… it is WRONG to contracept… and plus this device is dangerous… so it could fall under the category of the sin of mutilation…

i think it should be removed asap.

I see no reason why I should get rid of the IUD especially considering that my priest has no problem with me keeping it in.
there are a lot of preists who are unorthodox…

Jesus established the papacy to show us the way to go when we don’t know what to do… we can trust the pope…

Even so… the bible says call no man your father… meaning do not follow someone blindlly… letting that person take the place of your conscience…

Even popes have done evil, but they have not been allowed to TEACH evill… false beliefs/practices… God protects them from doing so… and so no pope has ever been offiically in favor of birth control…

your priest is not following the Church…

and that thing is endnagering your health and fertility…

Yes, I had decided to get my IUD removed but then I changed my mind and left it in. I am now considering getting it removed again.

Anyway, please don’t call my friend a horrible influence. He is the best influence I have in my life besides my spiritual director. He is just concerned for me.
maybe so, but not as much as Jesus …

Jesus suffered and died for your sins…

I don’t know about anyone else but i’ve never had a friend who would do much of anything for me… much less suffer and die for me… My “friendships”, when tested failed the t est, the test of Unconditionalality… failed miserably. Human love is no love at all…

(want to test a friendship: become a “radical” Catholic…

Be prepared to lose friends… so- called)…

Explain to him that you feel that you are less likely to have sex again if you take out the IUD because you would be scared of becoming pregnant. It’s like giving up chocolate, but carrying around a Hershey Bar inside your purse just in case you slip. It gives you a reason to slip whereas taking it out would be a reason to prevent you from slipping.

In addition to this, you are Catholic and even if you were to slip and have sex, the IUD causes an abortion. Tell him you can’t justify to yourself killing a person so that you can continue to live your life as you choose.
thanks so much for bringing this up, that the iud causes abortion. i had forgotten that for some reason…

(and the reason is NOT age…)

😃

i believe its a mortal sin becaue it is artificial contraception…
The sin is in thwarting the life giving aspect of the sexual act. There is no sin if she is not sexually active. There may have been a sin when she first had it put in, but not in leaving it in.

It is much like a vasectomy. It is sinful to get one - it is not sinful to continue in the condition of having your tubes disconnected.

A Vasectomy is considered permanant. Reversal is an expensive, difficult procedure.

This is more akin to a unmarried person keeping a big box of condoms in the purse “just in case”. If you are going to be chaste, have the stupid thing pulled out. Knowing it is there could be a near occasion to sin, especially for someone who is very weak in the faith and or easily influenced by unbelievers.

Best friend or not, former sexual partner or not, I fail to see how it’s any of his business.

If he was your current sexual partner, then I could see it, but since he’s not, your birth control choices (or lack thereof) are none of his business – and should he ask, that’s all you need to tell him.

i pretty much agree…

it almost sounds like maybe he is planning on getting back into some kind of sexual thing with her???

could be wrong… but stranger things have happened…

Sure he will. He has prevented me from killing myself numerous times, he’s always telling me not to lie to my parents and stuff. Just because he doesn’t want me to get the IUD removed (and indeed a priest told me it was ok to leave it in so long as I am chaste) doesn’t mean that he’s going to drag me to Hell.

I tell him everything. He’d find out eventually anyway.
if i can say waht i think without getting blasted (a rarity here on CAF, i know…)…

i can’t help what i think… This is just a thought…

but if he is such a wonderful friend… why would you be wanting to leave him through that most awful vehicle, suicide??

First of all THANKS for asking.

You seen to possess maturity and intellegence from you’re post.

Yes it MUST be removed for a couple of reasons.

It is foreign to you’re body and not healthy

pre-matrial sex is always and everytime Mortally Sinful

And we many not employ any means of artifical birthcontrol
**
The Catechesism**

2399 The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilization or contraception).

2366 Fecundity is a gift, an end of marriage, for conjugal love naturally tends to be fruitful. A child does not come from outside as something added on to the mutual love of the spouses, but springs from the very heart of that mutual giving, as its fruit and fulfillment. So the Church, which is “on the side of life,” teaches that** “it is necessary that each and every marriage act remain ordered per se to the procreation of human life.” “This particular doctrine, expounded on numerous occasions by the Magisterium, is based on the inseparable connection, established by God, which man on his own initiative may not break, between the unitive significance and the procreative significance which are both inherent to the marriage act**.”

I know this is a little off topic, but this sounds like it would be against adoption. O.o

You are right. Your analogy is better.

But owning a box of condoms is not the sin of contracepting. It is probably sinful as it implies an intent to commit sin and is at least a sin against the virtue of prudence.

The IUD is the same. It is probably not a good idea to keep it in but it isn’t a sin of contraception to do so.

The only purpose of an IUD is to make certain that no pregnancy can survive. It is indeed harmful. Get rid of it.
It’s not certain…some of us were born with our mother’s IUD lodged in our placenta’s:) Thankfully it did not choose to take up residence in a part of my body I used after I left the womb;)

We can look at this question two ways: From a sin point of view there is no sin to leave it in if she will remain chaste. It’s a sin to use ABC. No sex=no use. Now from a health point of view, it should be removed due to the fact that it could damage her body (and would almost certainly damage or kill a pregnancy should there be a slip).

It seems pretty clear from what you say that your reason for keeping the IUD isn’t just to ‘have an IUD’, but to have it there in case you decide to be sexually active at some point. Given that, and given that sin is in the ‘intent’, I would say that it is at least a venial sin to keep the IUD (the technical keeping of it is not the sin, per se, but the intent behind keeping it).

If you are living a chaste and celibate life, as fits your life situation and circumstances, you have no need of an IUD or any other form of contraception.

In my humble opinion, your ‘friend’ doesn’t sound like much of a friend (being more concerned about what he sees as possible burdens, complications, problems, etc., than he is about you as a whole person and about the welfare of your body and soul.)

And I have to wonder why you cannot or do not make your decision about this yourself. You speak, regarding any possible responsibility on your part - for your own life, body and decisions, about your friend telling you to do such and such, the priest telling you to do such and such and, finally, you are asking all of us what WE think about what everyone is telling you to do.

It’s your decision. You are the only one who knows your own mind, heart and intention. You can’t make decisions of conscience via a 3rd party - and your friend should have no say at all in the matter. You write that he is concerned for you and protecting you but then you get to the truth of it - that what he’s really concerned about is the ‘problem’ or ‘burden’ of your becoming pregnant. That attitude shows no concern at all either for you, as a person, or for any potential child that could be part of the picture.

You would be much better served in all this by taking responsibility for yourself and for your own decisions and lifestyle. If/when you commit sin, it’s not going to be your friend or your priest who ultimately has to deal with it. It will be you and only you - and God.

You are in my prayers - may God bless and keep you!

🙂

Well, I am officially getting it removed. My gynecologist’s office scheduled me an appointment for Monday to talk to my doctor. I don’t know why they think I have to talk to him about it first though. I mean, why can’t they just schedule the removal and let it be done??? Anyway, I am definitely going through with removing it. 🙂
