Vern, you finally said something I agree with! I’m so happy! One of the reasons I come to this forum is to try to find common ground with people I don’t agree on all issues with. Have a Holy Advent! 😃
The same to you, my friend.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

Ditto. But the main fact is, we musn’t worship earthly people other than god. “Thou shalt not haver other gods before me. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them. For I, your God, am a jealous God.”
Just who are you saying “worships” other people?

Without risking any offence, no-one is greater, nor higher than God.
777, are you serious, or is this an attempt at sarcasm?

Can we start bashing you for thinking Paris Hilton is not your neighbor?

It’s the truth. The book of Exodus says strongly against idol worship.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Let me be the first to announce my pending conversion to the Church of 777:whacky:

I’ll let you know the details once I figure it out, because its obvious that 2000 years of Catholic Doctrine, revealed by the brilliant minds of numerous Church Doctors and leaders, is all wrong.

I notice that 777 is avoiding answering your question Vern.

So 777 will you answer Verns’ question about worshipping earthly people. Even Protestants don’t accuse us of that?

Tell us why you think Catholics worship PEOPLE??

Can you prove it?
1 Peter 2:
13 Be ye subject therefore to every human creature for God’s sake: whether it be to the king as excelling; 14 Or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of the good: 15 For so is the will of God, that by doing well you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16 As free, and not as making liberty a cloak for malice, but as the servants of God. 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

What do you think about this?

God is the king. And I would rather honour only God and his son than a crooked politician, a corrupt world leader (a la Nixon), a filthy porn star, an evil gay and/or lesbian, or even a greedy self absobed celeb.

You are still avoiding answering Vern’s question. You said we worship earthly people!
Why do you say that? Do you fully understand what the word worship means?

What you say is a red herring. You say we should be worshipping God but worship people. We don’t worship people. We worship God and in religion WORSHIP has nothing to do with your definition. Divine worship includes three principal acts, namely adoration (or the recognition of God’s perfection), prayer or the asking of divine help, and sacrifice or the offering of something precious to God.
Catholics worship God. Your contention that we worship people is simply stupid.

2303 Deliberate *hatred *is contrary to charity. Hatred of the neighbor is a sin when one deliberately wishes him or her evil. Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him or her grave harm. “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons and daughters of your Father who is in heaven.”

No, I was never advocating worship of people other than our heavenly father. I was saying we must worship only God, not people. Also, remember, no-one is more popular than Jesus. The late john Lennon learned that the hard way.

I’m wondering if you are really reading the responses and just not understanding where we come from or just posting to hear (see) yourself talk…

I’m going to assume the former…SO…
  1. According to your orriginal post, we should not honor leaders because it is a form of worship.
  2. It was later replied that honor and worship are not the same.
  3. We both agree that worship belongs only to God.
  4. It was pointed out again…many times, that we are required (by Jesus, the Bible and the Church) to HONOR those in authority over us.
  5. This Honor IS NOT the same as Worship.
I hope this helps 👍

ps - if you are still confused, please point out the specific item (1-5) that is causing this confusion. It will help the discussion.

777, sometimes you remind me of someone being chased in the old movies. As they are fleeing, they throw things out of the vehicle hoping it will divert the people chasing them.

But I’ll bite, why did John Lennon’s murder by an obessive fan have anything to do with his statement that, “If Jesus were alive today, more people would come to see us (the beatles)”? I found that as a sad statement on the state of Christianity and the mis-placed idolatry of rock-and-roll fans, rather than a shot at Jesus.

Oh well, maybe another thread.
