Would life be worth living if there was no God?

Have you quit searching for the truth?
I don’t know if I would phrase it like that. I’m fascinated with some of the conversations here, and intrigued to know what is behind them.

I am always open to talking with people and learning.

I think some things are beyond me, and always will be.

Like this philosophy stuff 😃

I just know what I know 😃

I can’t do the fancy philosophical argumentations. It’s a bit like chemistry. My brain just doesn’t do chemistry. I could spend the next 10 years locked in a library and I would still not be able to tell you the first thing about chemistry.
Oh the irony of running a business where chemistry is losely connected to a particular process!!! But I just pay people that know now 😃

Relative, subjective, objective - it’s all the same to me, because at the end of the day, I draw my ‘‘objectivity’’ from a deep sense of intrinsic pride, worth and value, family history, societal norms, community cohesion, love, work and co-operation. All the things that help us survive and grow and develop.

You draw it from the belief in the existence of some Deity.

For me, it makes no difference what so ever whatever you want to call it.

I know how much I love my husband, children and family, and how much they love me, and I know how well balanced, happy and healthy they are. I know how we fit into our local community, and the wider society. I know what I and they mean to others, and what others mean to us.

That knowledge won’t change one iota if someone proved beyond any doubt what so ever that there was a God.

It also won’t change one iota if someone proved beyond any doubt what to ever that there was not a God.

Finding and conversing with a personal God will change you more than you ever know.

Well i suppose if there was going to be “nothing” forever…then what the heck eh. You wouldn’t know anything anyway. Everything might as well be null and void. 🤷
Live life now and don’t worry about the morrow, for who gives a hoot attitude.
Right M,

exactly

for tomorrow------------------nothing, forever…

religious folks are betting that there’s more, it’s our deepest/only hope.

for justice as well, otherwise Hitler and M. Theresa have the same fate, ugh.

This is a great forum. I’ve been accepted and welcomed and encouraged to get involved in conversations and people have been incredibly nice to me.

I’ve had a few jerks, but in the main, people here are just about the best advert for the Catholic religion and Catholics anyone could hope to find.

But I just can’t converse with someone/something I just don’t believe is there.

Sorry.

Fantastic. Being open to truth is essential.

What really impacted me was this: Faith is opening one’s heart and mind to God.

It was that simple.

My answer is yes.

I have no gods in my life, and yet I find my life full of love, happiness and meaning.

not for long…and then nothing, nada

we have to be honest with ourselves, no afterlife, no meaning.

i retreat to my Disneyland analogy, was it meaningful if right after you left you had no memory of it?

i read, i love, i learn, i live

but so what. in a few years or maybe tomorrow it’s all gone, for eternity.

and i gained not one iota of anything.

so why not just live for immediate pleasure, i’d be stupid not to, right? If there’s nothing ahead.

think…

You may not ultimately gain anything, but the world does, presuming you contribute something to it. Like great authors, greater entertainers, and scholars, to name a few - their contributions live on after them.

Your problem is that you’re viewing the situation exclusively through the prism of “What can I get out of this?”

Well, I’m hoping to get at least 85 years out of it 😃

I’ve already left children, work, writings, painting, and social projects. I’m sure I’ll see grandchildren and even great grandchildren before I go.

RIght now, I’m happy with my legacy. It can only get better 😃

No afterlife = a life here lived full of meaning and value and treasured as it’s the one life we have - ok, I should say it’s the one life I have. 🙂

As for your analogy, of course it was meaningful, right there, in the moment. If you can’t remember it, it doesnt mean it didnt happen, or that you didn’t enjoy it or that it wasnt some how meaningful. And besides, some things, like Disney, should only ever be lived through once 😃

I don’t remember every meal I had out with friends or family. Does that mean I didnt enjoy them, or that they were meaningless - of course not!!!

Are you seriously suggesting that people who suffer from Altzimers or dementia havent lived a full and meaningful life, just because they cant remember a thing about it, not even their children in some cases?

You should think - we’ve learned that selfish, self centered behavior is bad for the species. We developed into co-operative societies to better ensure our survival, and as our language and expression developed, so did our ability to communicate not just directly but through music and writings and art and poetry. It’s what make us, us. We’re programed for our survival and we have the ability to understand the world and express it in ways unimaginable to our forefathers.

It’s a wonderful life 🙂

if you can’t remember it…it didn’t happen-------exactly.
with all respect atheist you’re imagining. if i told you yes, you were at Disneyland yesterday, it would be meaningless if you didn’t remember it.

and yes, why shouldn’t i be selfish thru my own prism. what would i care about the world if i’m non-existant?

Woody Allen " i don’t want to achieve immortallity through my work, i want to achieve immortality by not dying"

he gets it

and i gained not one iota of anything…
Did you eat, drink, learn new and fascinating things, make love, have children, give birth (if appropriate!) learn to drive, fly, command a sub, write a story, paint a picture, watch the sun rise or set, walk the dogs in the first snows of winter, lit a fire, fished, got wasted with friends, felt the very first touch of your newborn, knowing it was the first time they’d felt human skin, smelt your newborn after their first wash, heard them laugh for the first time, watched a great ball game, walked in the rain … anything like that?

And you think you gained nothing?!?

Sarah x 🙂

if you can’t remember it…it didn’t happen-------
Oh boy.

So your position is if you can’t remember something, it didn’t happen!!!

Talk about subjective!!!

I’m guessing then you never learned to walk, talk, or eat with a knife and fork because you don’t remember them happening.

I guess your parents never had a first birthday for you, because you don’t remember it happening.

So if you dont remember, obviously it didnt happen!!!

That’s a good point at which to wish you all a good evening. I’m philosophized out!!!

Sarah x 🙂

to the former, i know they happened cause in the present i see the results and my parents told me which i remember.

i don’t know if i had a first bday party and it is irrelivant tome cause i can’t remember it, correct.

So your reality is entirely subjectively based on whether you can remember something or not.

If you can’t remember it, it didnt happen.

I hope it never ever happens, but should you get dementia, and can’t even remember your name, then you don’t exist.

The objective evidence of your existense is irrelevant, because, you can’t remember, and according to you, if you can’t remember, it didn’t happen.

If you can’t remember your mom training you to use a knife and fork, you can’t say you’ve got objective evidence for it, because your dementia prevents you from remembering how to. And your mom may have dementia and not remember teaching you. So if she doesnt remember teaching you, and you dont remember learning, then, it never happened! Despite the fact you could have been using a knife and fork for 70 years!!!

Can you see how flawed that is???

What if you forgot there was a God, or in your dementia, forgot you had a faith and couldnt remember anything about it? Would you say your faith and God don’t exist, because you don’t remember them?

Sarah x 🙂

(definately switching off this time - good night all)

not that it didn’t happen. i mean,if your dead your life happened but so what . your nothing now. meaningless.

they’re not perfect analogies because your still alive. even tho you don’t remember, the event has affected you in the present.
in death you have nothing, memory, affect NOTHING.

Yes, but who cares? Many people think it would be great not to exist. Perhaps secretly, we all do. Schopenhauer: “Non-existence is better than any form existence.”

I am a Christian, but I hope that Heaven is actually non-existence. But I wouldn’t mind either the Beautific Vision, the Garden of Eden, never-ending sleep, or an endless party…
