I think you must be understanding me…look at it this way - situation A, and situation B:
Situation A: A non Catholic is curious about our faith, and would like to come in and experience worship. Certainly this is good. If the entire mass is in latin, he isn’t like to understand much of it at all, and will either spend the mass trying to follow along with the missal, or else simply become frustrated. In either case, he misses the true worship element of the faith, and could very well be turned off. From this standpoint, much better the have it in the vernacular.
Situation B: I, an English speaker, go to mass in a foreign country…lets say, France. Now, its true that, if the mass were in latin everywhere, it would be the same experience for me as if I were at mass at home. But since I’m familiar with mass anyway, I can probably follow things just fine in French. And, by having the mass in the vernacular, any frenchman could go to mass and understand EXACTLY what was happening…avoiding the negative elements of Situation A, above.
