Maybe this is just spring-cleaning fever, combined with cabin fever…
Anyway, my husband and I are thinking about moving someplace warmer. :tanning: Just thinking. We haven’t made an definite plans, although we talk about it a lot, especially this time of year.
One thing that overwhelms me when I really think about making plans for moving are all the things I’d have to sort through! We have a big house with great storage for our large family. Our home looks generally uncluttered because we’ve got a lot of storage, plus I don’t like clutter. I’m also frugal and we do use (or re-use) many of the items in storage. I can’t imagine bringing many of these things we’ve stored with us if we moved, but for now they’re neatly tucked away in storage and may be used again.
Things like:
**Clothes **in a different size than what any of us are wearing right now.
**Maternity clothes **(already significantly reduced. Not likely to be used by me.)
Baby clothes. (already significantly reduced. Many were given away–my friend gave me them back when her child outgrew them, and I stuck them back in storage.)
Toys. Not just the cheap kind, but nice toys that would have re-sale value.
**Old stuff **that’s not in ideal conditions or current fashion. Things such as small appliances that work but that are slightly damaged and/or rarely used. Old Christmas and holiday decorations. Old gardening supplies.
Books, books and more books. We homeschool and have many books from preK-12+. Most are on bookshelves, looking much like a library.
I rotate what we use and display, so things that have been stored for years are likely to come out and get displayed in the future at some point in the future if we didn’t move. I’ll add that I like antiques, but even within antiques, things go in and out of fashion.
I’ll also add that while my own children aren’t likely to use many of these things, grandchildren might. If we didn’t move, some of these are the kinds of things one would expect to find at Grandma’s house.
Our storage is relatively neat and organized. I’d have to disorganize it to go through everything. If we were to list the house for sale, many could be given away at that time or hauled off to a storage facility and sorted at a later time. Then there’s things like some of our old furniture that’s bulky, purchased because it specifically fits this house. I wouldn’t move it, but we use it for now.
Anyway, there’s a reason why I have kept all this stuff. I’m sentimental and frugal, but I also care about style. I’m not sure if it’s time to part with many of these items or not. If I did get rid of them and we didn’t move, I’d regret it–but maybe keeping all these things is part of what keeps us from moving.
February. Bleh. :snowing:
(And just as I was about to post this, my youngest comes up to me and said, “Mommy, it’s sad that winter’s almost gone!” :winter: My kids love winter. They’d miss it if we moved somewhere warmer.)
