Would you hire a friend for housecleaning?

As in all relationships - communication is the key.

you need to discuss ahead of time things that could go wrong. You have to express concern that you have that it could lead to a strain on your friendship. And, I think you should come up with a short-term plan. something like :“I’m going to hire a house cleaner for six months to get me through some period when I am really busy at work.”

Because if you don’t have a termination date ahead of time - and at some point, it doesn’t work, then it’s a big deal to end the arrangement.

When you invite someone into your home - it is also possible that that person is exposed to things about you that might make you uncomfortable if a friend were aware of - or even if you don’t know that the friend may have seen something. A message on the answering machine (if anyone has those anymore). A letter from a creditor left on the table. An argument with your spouse.

So, if you want to do this, I would approach it like this. I would invite the friends over for coffee. I would tell them (if you want both of them to work for you - otherwise - just one) that I need some help for a limited amount of time. I would ask them if they are interested - I would clarify what I was going to pay - and what I wanted done. And I would express that I don’t want this arrangement to impair the friendship in any way - both ways. If they unexpectedly quit because they can’t stand working in your house- or if you can’t afford to continue the arrangement. It is unrealistic that there wouldn’t be hard feelings in either of those cases, but at least you discussed it. And then talk about it a lot. And then also bring up that when they are not working, you don’t want to discuss work - that you want your friendship to be as it was before.

And then, remind them periodically that it is for “three more months” or whatever. If everything is going well - you could always pull something at the end like “I know we agreed to do this for six months - but I have become so dependent on what you have done for me - would you consider staying on for another six months?” If it isn’t working out - you don’t offer the extra deal.

And if it creeps into your friendship - try to shut it down gently. If your friend brings up at a social gathering, “I noticed that under your refrigerator hasn’t been cleaned for a while - would you mind if i tackle that job?”. You need to respond : “Thank you - but we did agree not to discuss work while you are off-duty. Let’s not talk about it until you come in on Wednesday.”

And think ahead of time - if you will tip this person - and at Christmas - all those things ahead of time. What would you do if it were someone else? What will you do now.

It’s not that you shouldn’t do this - but explore all the negative things that might occur - and have a plan ahead of time. You can see why it might be easier to just hire someone else.

good luck!

It is interesting to see that it can work out. As I said my standards are low, my needs are specific, and she would be filling in for what my daughter used to help with before a toddler, back poblems, and a new pregnancy got in the way.
I am still considering those warnings too, it is why I haven’t done anything about it yet.
The other friend who cleans is way too much of a perfectionist for me. I don’t think either of them is a gossip, but she might be shocked by how little I am satisfied with. I coud never let her clean, it stresses me to have her visit, and yet she is a very laid back, light hearted person. The other friend is more like me, and I think I would be comfortable. Of course she may not even be interested, since I haven’t asked.
Thanks for the replies!

As a one-time, I would, but not as a recurring job.
This I concur with. Every few months, offer a few bucks for their expertise during a cleaning binge. Work with them, so you’re offering instruction on the fly and there are no surprises. Keep it social (which is why it only works every few months).

Heck NO! I am extremely particular when it comes to cleaning my house.

Not only would I- I do.

We have never had any conflict over our arrangement.

I did years ago when I was first married and worked full time. A great housekeeper I am not. We weren’t very close friends, she was a neighbor and my husband’s Navy buddy’s SIL. I mean we went shopping and stuff together but it wasn’t a close friend. It was fine, she had two kids and definitely needed the money. A little awkward when she would bring her husband to help on occasion. My lifelong close friends, that would feel weird.

I did. My friend was newly-married with a new baby and lost her job and she started a housecleaning business.

It was a little awkward at first but it worked out well. She only comes in once a month for a major cleaning and I keep it up the rest of the month. It is kind of funny when she comes over and knows where my stuff is better than me 🙂

It really depends on you, your friend, and the relationship you have. I have worked side jobs here and there for one of my good friends and it never caused any issues. I’m generally pretty easy going, though, so I don’t get worked up about taking direction in those types of defined circumstances. If my personality were different or his was, then I can see how it could lead to problems.

That said, I’d personally never want to hire a friend to clean my house as it would entail them going through my stuff. 😛 I’d be worried they’d never look at me the same way again. 😉

You mention another thread that reminded you of this situation, but you didn’t mention which thread that was.

But, no matter what you do, please read this thread about a situation where things do go wrong. I don’t post this to discourage you - but just so you think ahead of time how you would handle a situation that didn’t meet your expectations.

Someone else today had asked how many people had household help.
That thread is indeed a nightmarish situation but it seems like they hired the nephew without any idea of whether he had the skills for such a big job. Misunderstandings from the beginning. Family is probably worse than friends because so many people can get involved with hurt feelings.

It is easy to hire (and fire) a housekeeper, but hard to find a friend. While I might use a friend in some professional situations–doing my taxes, something like that, maybe–regular housekeeping isn’t one of them.

It really, really depends on the situation. My husband and I own a business. There are some family members we have hired for certain jobs, and other members we know it’s best to stay away from. More than half of my husband’s large family is self-employed in different areas. We do work for each other. I’ve hired family to baby sit. You just have to make a judgement call if the person is responsible and mature enough to do the job well and have a civil conversation when dealing with business issues.

I personally wouldn’t hire a close friend or family to clean, only because I would be embarrassed at the condition of my house. It would be a good idea, if you do, to have clear expectations laid out. Maybe even say “we will have a checklist and we’ll do a walk through before you leave and are paid”. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable saying something like that to them, that’s your first clue it would be a bad idea to hire them.

Thank you for your response. I actually think that my friend meets the suggested requirements and I am not personally embarrassed by my mess, since I am disabled. If I were not, I certainly would be embarrassed, but it is one of the nice side effects of my illness- I can’t really do the cleaning myself.
When we were together last week I tried to sound her out about it. I am not sure she is interested, but I may have been too vague. Sort of asked her how she liked cleaning, etc. I may be bolder. I actually think that because I have specific, finite, and fairly low expectations it may work out, but I will proceed with caution.

You should only hire a friend to houseclean if you are willing to fire the friend from housecleaning if necessary.
