Would you join a Crusade?

Why do you think Christ warned us there would be wars and rumours of wars? Do you suppose He understood human nature all too well? Just because He talked of wars, “I” don’t believe means He approved of them. The problem is, I think in all wars, everyone believes God is on their side. How can that be? 😉 Peace.
This is not true… Most wars are fought for a variety of reasons, land, water, oil… politics, power, racial hatred. Sometimes religion is used as a vehicle to rally the masses, but rarely are wars really about religion.
Seeing as there always has been war, and Christ says there will be until the end, what makes you think you or we are so special as to rise above it. Are you greater than Moses, or perhaps Saints. Even God’s angels don’t take your mythical high road. It is as necessary as earthquaqes, which is also spoken of in that same verse, It is a failure of Mankind to be sure, but it also is a failure of St. Michael, His angels, The OT Jews,… As you can see, while the vehicle leaves a lot to be desired, it is even employed by the heavenly armies, and by God himself in the war at the End.
Ultimately, we are culpable in our decision to War but it is that realization that makes some people’s choice to go to war that much holier.
If I was called, by my country I would go… So if by my Holy mother Church (infinitly more honorable than my country) not only would I go but I would go with (hopefully ) the prayers, and powers of the Faithful and the Blessing of God.

Well, I have to agree, you have your interpretation and I have mine, but “absolutely” necessary?? I don’t think so… 😉 Peace.

Well, I have to agree, you have your interpretation and I have mine, but “absolutely” necessary?? I don’t think so… 😉 Peace.
Ahhhh but the real question is What is the Church’s interpretation. I am obedient to death to my Faith. My Church says, We are not to kill in Her name right now so I am obedient and I don’t lop peoples heads off.😃 But the real point of this thread is would you be obedient if the Church called you to do something you question. Ultimately that is a choice in each person’s soul and who are we to judge. Well we are human to judge so you call me a warmonger and I’ll call you a coward, (though neither of us is either;)

If by Christ you mean God (and as a Catholic you should) Then YES! Christ Himself leads a war in Heaven. Cmon fellow Catholics…read your Bible and not just the Gospels.
The Gospels are the fulfillment and perfection of the Old Testament. Hence, their message holds the fuller truth, even as regards war.

Thanks heaven man’s understanding of architecture has gone beyond the tent; thank heaven his understanding of God has been revealt beyond the Old Testament.
God lead wars in OT and Jesus says there will be Wars and rumors of Wars until the end.
As part of a long litany of tragic things which will overcome the world. I am Christian pacifist, not a secular pacificidealist. I do not believe world peace to be possible on purely human terms.
He does not condemn them. Sometimes wars protect those who need it. (like peace activist)
Peace activism and pacifism are different. The one is a false ideology believeing that humans are able, by themselves, to ameliorate and alleviate all human sufferings. As I am not secular, I do not agree with that at all.

As a pacifist, however, I choose not to condescend from my basic ideology, and refrain from killing - for any reason.

I forgive those who, knowing no better, choose to kill for worthy causes, tho I cannot laud their actions, and I pray with the Church for their safety when they are mentioned at Liturgy each Sunday.

I’d have to reeeeeeeealy think about it if the church said go to war, especially a war of aggressions. 😃 Peace.

Then you and I are in full agreement. Well exept my thought process would probably be quicker than yours.😉

Your understanding of OT NT and Apocolyptic literature is different than mine.
I am so glad you know better. Hopefully you can educate the rest of us.
Hopefully you will never be faced with war but if you are maybe your inteelectual and moral superiority can defeat your ignorant enemy.

Your understanding of OT NT and Apocolyptic literature is different than mine.
Christ Himself said that He was the fulfillment of the Law, and the Gospels are His recorded works. Are not the Gospels then the fulfillment of the Old Testament?
I am so glad you know better. Hopefully you can educate the rest of us.
Hopefully you can quite feigning humility which, I must congratulate you, is hard to do with your sword drawn.
Hopefully you will never be faced with war but if you are maybe your inteelectual and moral superiority can defeat your ignorant enemy.
Victory is not the goal of the Christian. Salvation is.

Then you and I are in full agreement. Well exept my thought process would probably be quicker than yours.😉
I have heard somewhere that foresight is better than hindsight. I think that may take a little longer than just jumping in to a situation, don’t cha think? 🙂 🙂 😉

SPXII,

I wrote a long response to your statements and it, apparently, was too large. Therefore I am going to reply individually without your quotes. You can go back and re-read the individual statements I addressed if you so desire.

First and foremost, you do not belong in this thread. The OP asked the following question “If hypothetically, the Pope called for a military crusade, would you join it?” By your own admission, you are an Eastern Orthodox member, and therefore do not fall under the authority of the Pope. Ergo, the question of responding to a Crusade does not involve you in the least.

Innocent people die every day. Innocent people have died since Adam populated this earth. Hasn’t changed from then until now, it’s not going to change until Jesus comes back. Why innocents die is not for you or I to justify. Evil aggression has killed many more innocents than collateral damage in all the wars put together

Your Pearl Harbor/Nagasaki-Hiroshima comparison is absurd. Pearl Harbor was a completely unprovoked act of evil aggression, plain and simple. If you think innocents did not die in Pearl Harbor, I suggest you re-read history. Also, the atomic strikes on the Japanese cities prevented an extended war and a continued loss of “innocent” lives. Do you honestly think the Japanese civilians would not have given the allies resistance once the allies landed on the Japanese mainland?

That’s not what your statement alluded to. Occupation. Huge difference.

I don’t see where war is never right. I believe war should be avoided if at all possible, but I also firmly believe there are times when it is not possible to avoid.

Your “realm of the unforgivable” worries me. I didn’t get the memo where you were the judge on what was and was not unforgivable. How you feel you can dictate what indulgences eradicate, or who and how martyrs are classified is not your decision. Last time I checked our martyrs were decided by our Church. Not the (name removed by moderator)ut of lay Christians who are not part of the Latin Rite.

Cowards stay behind women and children. The Palestinians are a good example. In fact, any of the islamic radical fundamentalists are good examples. Martyrs may not die “with sword in hand” but many a saintly martyr has used a sword in the name of God. I guess the name of St. Joan of Arc is unknown to you. Shall I name others?

I loved the one about how “it hasn’t been God who called the Crusades”. I guess you were there and can refute history from your first hand experience. Is there no end to your arrogance?

Oh, and I’m sure you are on His speed dial so when and if He does call a Crusade, you will know it was from Him and you can retract all of your statements humbly. Besides, He’ll call Catholics so you may not get the memo. Fret not, we’ll take care of it for you.

Anyone with any sense would agree that wars are best if completely prevented. However as long as there is evil in the world, wars will happen. When they do, there needs to be those who protect the innocent along with those who cannot protect themselves. If we hadn’t in the past, we would still be greeting each other with Sieg Heil!!

I’m surprised to read you don’t have all the answers. That’s not the message you’re trying to convey here.

My Church will decide if and when modern warfare is permissible. If the situation degrades to the point that a Crusade is a serious consideration, contingency plans will be in place. The Church is not lead by idiots but rather very intelligent people. People who are more than capable of planning all eventualities.

“and cannot be viewed as the standard, apostolic view of the matter.”

One Holy, apostolic Church. period.

So you want to force the Church to take an extreme stance?? The Church does not entirely reject pacifism but rather feels there is room for those individuals who feel peace at all costs is their mantra as well as just war. It’s not either or, there is room for both. Also, wartime popes aside? So again, we’re making exceptions when it suits our convenience.

Side with human dignity. If your “human dignity” is against the official stance of the Catholic Church, then suffer the consequences. Besides, “disagreeing” with war is, again, not the issue. Rather it is going against the Church and her directives, or even better, a divine call.

How a martyr dies is irrelevant. A martyr dies for their religion. So if God calls a pacifist martyr to die through suffering then how is that different then if He has a martyr die through unfailing service of the Church through a Crusade. You are not the judge on how a martyr “should” die.

God has asked many to die via the sword. His decision is final, not your opinion.

Doesn’t change the fact that you’ve never experienced war. Guilt or not, you don’t know what it is like and, therefore, cannot say how easy it is to die. You don’t know how easy it is to die. You’ve never been there.

Your “jesuit” was wrong.

I can see why.

Total Faith, total commitment. If you can’t make that total commitment, don’t fall back on your own personal justifications.

Are you a seer? Can you predict the future? It’s easy for a Pope to make decisions about the past. Hindsight is always 20/20. But they weren’t considered mistakes at the time. No one on earth is perfect. It is learning from those mistakes where the growth and development comes into play.

Figures.

Didn’t make a good point. Only pointed out how you don’t have a leg to stand on.

SPXII,

I
Hello Templar. A question. Do you know if in calling for the Crusades, the Pope spoke Ex Cathedra? As I have said before, I am just beginning to study this period in history. Like you, given human nature, I don’t know if it is possible to have peace among all continually. I don’t like war, I don’t like killing. I have a hard time understanding why we can’t all get along until someone doesn’t agree with me. Also Christ’s statement to Peter, “Those who live by the sword, shall die by the sword”, is a bit scary. :banghead: Peace.

First and foremost, you do not belong in this thread. Eastern Catholic. They do exist, you know.
Innocent people die every day. Innocent people have died since Adam populated this earth. Hasn’t changed from then until now, it’s not going to change until Jesus comes back. Why innocents die is not for you or I to justify. Evil aggression has killed many more innocents than collateral damage in all the wars put together
Can you quantify the value of one life? Until you can, proportioning the deaths of innocents is like justifying the Armenian Genocide by virtue of Stalin’s gulags. Both are wrong.
What I think is irrelevant. No one, not even the Church at its most militaristic, condones attacks on purely civilian targets.
That’s not what your statement alluded to. Occupation. Huge difference.
How did the occupiers get into Iraq? By invading.
I don’t see where war is never right. I believe war should be avoided if at all possible, but I also firmly believe there are times when it is not possible to avoid.
Inevitable =/= right.
Your “realm of the unforgivable” worries me. I didn’t get the memo where you were the judge on what was and was not unforgivable. I am that judge in the realm of my own opinions. Whether or not those opinions matter to you will be determined by how well I am able to corroborate them.
Cowards stay behind women and children. The Palestinians are a good example. In fact, any of the islamic radical fundamentalists are good examples. St. Joan of Arc…let’s not go there.

Ha! At least my arrogance leaves no dead.
Oh, and I’m sure you are on His speed dial so when and if He does call a Crusade, you will know it was from Him and you can retract all of your statements humbly. Besides, He’ll call Catholics so you may not get the memo. Fret not, we’ll take care of it for you.
I’m not on His speed dial. The point was rhetorical, and you just made it - it will never happen.
If we hadn’t in the past, there would not have been a First World War, a devestated Germany and a Third Reich. Hence, the words “Sieg Heil” would mean nothing…
I’m surprised to read you don’t have all the answers. That’s not the message you’re trying to convey here.
Erm…yes it is. However, as your argument needs me to be a pretentious know-it-all, you refuse to see the heart of *my *argument.

The core of my case is that I don’t know God’s will well and so I would never presume to use my shaky understanding of it to justify killing.

More to come.

My Church will decide if and when modern warfare is permissible. If the situation degrades to the point that a Crusade is a serious consideration, contingency plans will be in place. A pacifist can no more acknowledge the need for just war than a just war theorist can acknowledge pacifism as wholly correct.

This room for both is a little crowded.

And yes, wartime Popes aside. Unless, of course, every action of the Pope is morally correct and the Pope himself impeccable.
So again, we’re making exceptions when it suits our convenience.
Yes, we both are. Unfortunately, you have to make exception to the oldest of Church Fathers, Popes and, yes, Christ Himself.

Come to think of it:

Christ was wholly innocent. Had the apostles “risen to defend the innocent” with a sword, the Redemption of the human race would never have occurred. Indeed, as I said before, I am not wise enough to know God’s will. Perhaps the death of the innocent one, instead of the death of the unjust aggressor, fits more fully in His plan? Who are my sword and I to determine this?
Side with human dignity. If your “human dignity” is against the official stance of the Catholic Church, then suffer the consequences. Besides, “disagreeing” with war is, again, not the issue. Rather it is going against the Church and her directives, or even better, a divine call.
Once again, you can deny that I have the hotline to Heaven, and I can deny that you have.

We probably wouldn’t hear the divine call ringing over our bickering, anyway, for whomever it came. After all, God chooses to speak in the gentle breeze, not the storm and tempest.
How a martyr dies is irrelevant. A martyr dies for their religion. So if God calls a pacifist martyr to die through suffering then how is that different then if He has a martyr die through unfailing service of the Church through a Crusade. You are not the judge on how a martyr “should” die.
But does a martyr kill for his religion? This is the question.

Exempla Gratia?

When do the ends justify the means? What morality is this?..sounds relativist.
Total Faith, total commitment. If you can’t make that total commitment, don’t fall back on your own personal justifications.
I fall back on my conscience. But, I forgot, every word the Pope utters is divine Writ to be incorporated into the canon of the Scriptures and obeyed to the letter! Silly me!
Are you a seer? Can you predict the future? It’s easy for a Pope to make decisions about the past. Hindsight is always 20/20. But they weren’t considered mistakes at the time. No one on earth is perfect. It is learning from those mistakes where the growth and development comes into play.
Moral relativism again.
Didn’t make a good point. Only pointed out how you don’t have a leg to stand on.
Pointed out how you presume on my destroying my case when, in fact, I haven’t.

Eastern Catholic. They do exist, you know.

Do they?

Can you quantify the value of one life? Until you can, proportioning the deaths of innocents is like justifying the Armenian Genocide by virtue of Stalin’s gulags. Both are wrong.

**Both were wrong. You are correct. And both were unavoidable. **

What I think is irrelevant. No one, not even the Church at its most militaristic, condones attacks on purely civilian targets.

No one condones attacks on purely civilian targets. But one must look at the context of the attacks. Again, I go to the OT and look how many times innocent civilians were slaughtered.

How did the occupiers get into Iraq? By invading.

No, mostly by plane.

Inevitable =/= right.

Inevitable = unavoidable. Taking the “right” stance does not preclude the inevitable, it only leaves you unprepared.

I am that judge in the realm of my own opinions. Whether or not those opinions matter to you will be determined by how well I am able to corroborate them.

**I highly doubt you, or anyone, can change my opinions with regard to my faith. Determination =/= fruition. **

St. Joan of Arc…let’s not go there.

Shall I find another?

Ha! At least my arrogance leaves no dead.

Does this end justify the means?

I’m not on His speed dial. The point was rhetorical, and you just made it - it will never happen.

No, the point was you are not the one to decide if and when it happens. Saying that a divine interaction will never happen is a little out of touch don’t you think?

If we hadn’t in the past, there would not have been a First World War, a devestated Germany and a Third Reich. Hence, the words “Sieg Heil” would mean nothing…

Can we take this argument how far back? Are you honestly going to try and argue “if wars never happened??” It’s like a friend of mine said. “If my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle”. You can’t theorize how this world “would have been” if there was never a war. No one has that wisdom.

Erm…yes it is. However, as your argument needs me to be a pretentious know-it-all, you refuse to see the heart of *my *argument.

I see your points very clear. Let me summarize it. You don’t like violence, violence is never the answer, and there is never a justification for violence. Am I off base here?

The core of my case is that I don’t know God’s will well and so I would never presume to use my shaky understanding of it to justify killing.

So you admit you don’t know God’s will, yet you will sit here and say that if God calls for a Crusade, it is wrong? Does that not reek of hypocrisy? You don’t have to understand God’s message to either receive it or act on it.

More to come.

part 1

The wisest of the wise know nothing compared to God.

Amen. What is the relevance to this conversation? I never even implied that any human could match God’s wisdom. God blesses men with wisdom and to the level he sees fit. I would believe that God would bless the leaders of His Church here on earth with wisdom.

If the Church continues to approve both pacifism and just war theory, then there is not a “standard” view. At best, there are two views which are tolerated.

There is a main view, Just War, and an allowed view, pacifism. It is akin to having that uncoordinated friend that wants to play sports but doesn’t have the skill level. He’s allowed to come along but the team is not judged by his ability.

A pacifist can no more acknowledge the need for just war than a just war theorist can acknowledge pacifism as wholly correct.

There are shades of grey here.

This room for both is a little crowded.

It will always be.

And yes, wartime Popes aside. Unless, of course, every action of the Pope is morally correct and the Pope himself impeccable.

We know the truth here. I feel the Pope’s make moral decisions, including the wartime Popes. The opinion that the war time Popes did not make a moral decision is just that, an opinion.

Yes, we both are. Unfortunately, you have to make exception to the oldest of Church Fathers, Popes and, yes, Christ Himself.

If Christ gave Peter the keys to the Church and to the Apostles the Holy Spirit, did he not also give them the wisdom to guide the Church in the right direction? To say the Church is wrong is to say that everyone from the original 12 has been wrong.

Come to think of it:

Christ was wholly innocent. Had the apostles “risen to defend the innocent” with a sword, the Redemption of the human race would never have occurred.

Christ is the example we are all to live by. But until we live in a perfect world, his perfection is beyond our reach.

Indeed, as I said before, I am not wise enough to know God’s will.

Yet you feel that you can claim what is right or wrong when it comes to the Church. If you don’t know God’s will (I don’t either, no one does) then how can you say what God may or may not will?

Perhaps the death of the innocent one, instead of the death of the unjust aggressor, fits more fully in His plan? Who are my sword and I to determine this?

Who are any of us to question His plan?

Once again, you can deny that I have the hotline to Heaven, and I can deny that you have.

I don’t claim I do. What I do claim is that I believe the Pontiff does. I have to “have faith” in him guiding the Church in the right direction. If he calls for a Crusade, I believe that will be the right direction.

We probably wouldn’t hear the divine call ringing over our bickering, anyway, for whomever it came. After all, God chooses to speak in the gentle breeze, not the storm and tempest.

God has used a burning bush, a pillar of fire, a cloud on a mountain to give his message. Can God choose to use a whisper to speak to a peaceful man in silent meditation in a city/state?

But does a martyr kill for his religion? This is the question.

Here is your answer. Do all martyrs die at the hands of the evil one?

Exempla Gratia?

**I love this answer.

The French knight Hugues de Payens and his relative Godfrey de Saint-Omer.

Or would you prefer I name another of the many, many Knights Templar that “killed” for their religion and was later martyred?**

When do the ends justify the means? What morality is this?..sounds relativist.

Relative to you. Again, research the Jesuits, not just your friend.

I fall back on my conscience. But, I forgot, every word the Pope utters is divine Writ to be incorporated into the canon of the Scriptures and obeyed to the letter! Silly me!

St. Sarcastic, I’m glad you made an appearance today.

Moral relativism again.

Relative to your morals?

Pointed out how you presume on my destroying my case when, in fact, I haven’t.

Only pointing out how you don’t have a valid case.

God needs defending???

Matthew
Excellent question!!! If he is all powerful, he could handle the battle all on his own! Like he did time and time again in the bible. He slaughtered millions in that “holy book!” Yikes!!!

Just over 61% of you said you would follow the Pope and kill others in blind obedience!!! That’s incredibly chilling!!!

Excellent question!!! If he is all powerful, he could handle the battle all on his own! Like he did time and time again in the bible. He slaughtered millions in that “holy book!” Yikes!!!
No doubt he can handle the “battle” on his own. Perhaps though you can explain why time and time again in the “Holy Book” He uses the Israelites to do His work for Him? Do you have an answer for that?

That’s incredibly chilling!!!
Do you know what’s incredibly chilling to me? That you claim to be a Catholic yet if God spoke to the Pontiff and instructed him to enact a Crusade, that you as a Catholic would ignore that order. I guess you only listen to God when it goes with what YOU want to believe?

Just over 61% of you said you would follow the Pope and kill others in blind obedience!!! That’s incredibly chilling!!!
Nobody mentioned blind obedience, you have made an assumption. As a Catholic you calling the Bible a ‘‘holy book’’ using inverted commas, suggests you aren’t a particularly orthodox one.
