Would you join a Crusade?

Again, we go to the same point. Should we not protect those in need? Even if force needs to be used? What about the Armenians? Should we have just let them die?
To kill to avenge the martyrs is to disgrace their martyrdom.

Justice is God’s.

It is lamentable that there are those who should kill. It is for the Christian to overcome his fallen nature, and to mend their hard-heartedness in other ways.

It is not a question of avenging martyrs, it is a question of defending the innocent.

Very true! Yet if Justice is God’s, how does he enact it? If a man steals from me is it wrong for me to call the police because justice is God’s and not the police? This can go even further, if my family is being attacked am I taking away from God’s justice by calling the police?

If my nation is being attacked, am I taking away from God’s justice by fighting?

This is not zealotry. There is a big difference between the zealots of Israel and the crusaders. The zealots believed that their sword could fulfill the promises of God. Only God can fulfill his promises. That is why we have to take EXTRA care to ensure that when we pick up a weapon, it is indeed for God’s will.

So how do we know when it is God’s will and when it is not? The answer is the Church. The Church lets us know when it is God’s will to fight through the just war doctrine.

What you and other pacifists have done is claim that the Church cannot discern when fighting is appropriate because there are no grounds to fight. An enemy like Islam of the days of the crusade was a grounds to fight. North Africa, Spain, Egypt and Parts of Levant and syria were all Christian. There are no longer Christian. If Islam had not being resisted through Christian warriors, the fate of Europe would have been the same. The fact of the matter is, is that God relied on the courage of men to enact his will. He used soldiers to resist an evil force.
It is lamentable that there are those who should kill. It is for the Christian to overcome his fallen nature, and to mend their hard-heartedness in other ways.
And to the young man who has the means to defend the defenseless? Is he not overcoming his fallen-nature by overcoming his cowardice and risking his life for those whom he loves? You make it sound like this is the easy way out, I can hardly see whats so easy about putting myself in the line of fire, so the defensless are not in the line of fire.

So we shouldn’t of helped them, had we known sooner. That would be a sin to help them?

Now, through Christ, we understand God’s will more fully - a will completely salutory, not malicious or vengeful.
So you’re either saying that those verses in the OT where God COMMANDS the Israelites to take military action were either not of God, in which case you’re challenging the inerrancy/authenticity of Scripture. Obviously, to show such major errors in Scripture would bring into question the rest of the Old Testament, including the prophecies that are fulfilled by Jesus and thus brings into question whether Jesus really is the Messiah or not. Either this or you are saying God’s a liar. God is not man to where He needs to tell people merely what they want to hear. If God ordered the Israelites to make war, then that had to have been His Will unless you are going to call Him liar.

So, my friend, which is it: Is God a liar or can the Old Testament not be trusted?
Where does war, which is the deliberate taking of human life, fundamentally, fit into this at all?
To war in the name of the Prince of Peace is to defame His name and dishonour his Will.
Who are you to determine where and how actions fit into God’s will? Furthermore, who are you to claim what defames/dishonours God?

That was precisely my question.
It is one thing to say, that you are a pacifist, but would help the wounded, in the war zone, or at home.
It is another to claim, (and I have heard this, in my youth), that “nursing the sick and injured is freeing up someone else to kill people”–as though, somehow, the wounded could be used as a political pawn.

I am:o no nurse, by the way; I am only a woman who came of age during the Vietnam War, and was not about to watch my school friends come home injured, and develop life-threatening complications because no one else would change dressings, and debrade exit wounds.
It is not pretty. If there were a crusade, there would be need of strong stomachs & brave hearts, to both get the wounded to a place of safety, and to care for them.
In World Wars 1 & 2, there were a good many COs who served as ambulance drivers, medics, nurses, &aiding chaplains. Somewhere in the intervening years, the concept changed.More & more, pacifism has come to mean:crying: “let enough people die, & the war will be over sooner”. :nope: :nope: Not so; it means an opportunity for the faint of heart to talk much, whilst doing little, except:banghead: keep a scorecard on the day’s casualties.😦
Hello Zooey. I guess I am waaaaaaaay behind the times. Lost in the shuffle. I just wonder how faint my heart would be if I tried to take care of physically wounded people??? I do better with the mentally wounded. No apprent blood, at least obvious. Many thanks for the explanation. God Bless. Peace. 🙂

Praying for you. :byzsoc:
Gee thanks because you are so right and God will agree with you and change my heart. I hate it when people do this to try to establish themselves as supirior.
I wont patronize you. I wont even pray for you in this rediculous debate I’ll just forget you.

ouch, that’s one cold potato.

The bottom line is God will judge. If a Crusade is called by the Holy See and is just and right, then the faithful will be in front protecting the women, children and cowards.

If peace at the price of slaughter, slavery or martyrdom is the right way, then those of us willing to sacrifice ourselves for others will find that out soon enough. But I, for one, am willing to take that chance and serve my penance in purgatory if I am mistaken.

:knight2: :knight2: :knight2: I am so excited for the next Crusade, I am already sharpening my SWORD!!! Actually, I don’t have a sword, but I am ready to go.

ouch, that’s one cold potato.
More like a potato with a chip on his shoulder. Get it…🙂
I just hate it when people are so smug and upity. I save my prayers for those that honestly want them, who arein need of assistance not someone I disagree with on a hypothetical situation. By the way, when I pray the rosary I am often reminded that it came about as a prayer for warriors to be victorious in battle.

St. Michael doesn’t have to lead any troops into battle at the end I guess. I guess Satan and His angels were never battled against. I guess the Bible lies when it says “War broke out in heaven” and for so many people who think there are just 4 books of the Bible and everything else is complimentary. The gospels tell us that there will be wars and rumors of wars. that nation will rise against nation. It does not condemn it it predicts it and Christ Himself as the White horse in Rev. 18: 11-16. will lead us into war. “He judges and wages war in rightousness” The armies of heaven followd Him. I just hope I am in that army. Then my friends you can pray for me… please pray for me. not just when you want me to agree with your version of theology.

Of course I would. Heck I don’t even need one to be called… Just give me a “morrally permissible” and a freakin sword. Christ and His Church would provide all else.
Goofyjim: You said you would only devend yourself or your loved ones… Goofy jim, I love YOU. I will defend so that you do not.
Heck, not even defense, just the Will of God is all I need.
People that say that Christ Church does not need this and that Jusus can handle Himself in a fight need to remember that Jesus Is God and God Himself has often used soldiers as a TOOL for his defense. His Establishment, and yes even His Offense!
ONWARD Christian Soldiers!!!
Hello Potato:D My question is always, how do we know God is using the right TOOLS? Look at WWII. I agree Hitler and his minions had to be taken down, but there were misguided “Christians” on the other side of the pond from us who believed their government was doing the right thing. A matter of National pride getting in the way of reason, the herd instinct and all that. But EVERYONE thought God was on their side. Human interpretation. But then there were the Crusades. As I understand it, but am going to have to study it more, the Muslims and Christians lived side by side in peace for many decades until the Pope and Christians decided they didn’t want Christ’s homeland “befouled” by unbelievers. But both Christians and Muslims thought they were in God’s Grace. So I really believe we need to tread very warily before hopping on the War band wagon, we need to understand the position of governments and the intentions of those governments as clearly as possible. But governments lie and have their own agendas, so how could we ever know?🤷

No, i would not because it is a preposterous question. Our Pope would never ask us to do that.

Good heavens aren’t we involved in enough armed conflict?

Thats incorrect, originally the Crusades were a response to a cry for help from the Byzantines (Orthodox), when the Seljuk Turks invaded Constantinople (now Istanbul).

In all honesty, I might have trouble participating militarily in a Crusade. I am currently discerning a call to Anglican Holy Orders and I assume it would be frowned upon for a Priest to take up arms militarily, especially if it is an Anglican taking up arms for the Roman Catholic Pope.

That said, I would hope I would be willing to serve as a Chaplain or somehow provide non-combattant and spiritual aide to the troops and people affected. Obviously, I would have to be careful in some respects because what if the Anglican Communion stands against the Crusade? After all, what would happen if I got excommunicated from Anglicanism?

Why would you even post in this thread? You’re not a Catholic therefore you are not under the authority of the Pope. You would not be called to a Crusade. Catholics don’t need anglican chaplains, we’ve got plenty of people willing to serve in this capacity and finally, if you did get excommunicated from the anglican church, you can become a Catholic and practice the truth.

i would no doubt!!! for as long as my cause is just christ and the holy father will be with me in the field.

I would have to assume that if a Crusade were called, it would be for a very grave reason and that, potentially, all of Christendom (i.e. not just Roman Catholic) is under threat. The only group I could foresee causing such a threat is Islam (just like in the original Crusades) and they don’t seem to differentiate between Roman Catholicism and the rest of Christianity. Certain elements of Islam have made it clear that they are going to turn Europe into an Islamic continent and that they want to capture the Vatican and Canterbury and other Christian centers. Unfortunately, parts of Anglicanism seem perfectly okay with kowtowing to Islam.

To the question ‘Would I join the next crusade?’ I answered ‘Not sure, it’s a difficult issue’. One, there is the issue of whether a Crusade is morally acceptible (both in general and in particular). Two, as an Anglican, how would the Communion respond? I have to assume that the very theologically liberal parts of Anglicanism might even stand with those being crusaded against, while the conservative Low Church (Evangelical/Reformed) Anglicans might or might not support the Crusade (perhaps affected by how they view Roman Catholicism) and the High Church (Anglo-Catholic) Anglicans might well jump on board the Crusade with their Roman brethren.

For me, it would be a difficult issue. Assuming the Crusade is morally righteous, there is the issue of how Anglicanism as a whole would respond to an individual (especially if that individual is ordained) joing the Crusade in some form and potentially bringing other Anglicans with them (can’t you envision the Anglican Priest giving a sermon and announcing that all the parishioners should follow in supporting the Crusade?). Like I said, excommunication does not sound good, especially since there is the risk I could die in the Crusade (I don’t believe excommunication would cost a person their Salvation, but it would certainly mess up their morale and they would be unable to partake in Anglican sacraments).

Canada is in armed conflic??? How many troops, I know they were “helping out” ((thanks) a little but I thought that stopped.
You don’t know that the pope wouldn’t certainly not at the moment but there are situations…
There has been in the past. Be ready to serve Holy Mother Church. Even if you can’t take up arms you can sow uniforms for the rest of us, or sharpen swords, Ya know help from the domestic side, with prayers even or cooking. Send over some cookies for those of us fighting. You can sow right?

Oky doky. As I said, I need to read up on it A LOT!! 😃
