I’ve had several friends lately who have embarked on a career, and then about 10 years into, decide to start making changes to circle back to their hometowns and be closer to family…especially after having had a baby.
Another aspect to consider is moving somewhere that will reduce the amount of family support you have. This can be very important for young mothers. If one of you or the baby became sick (God forbid) or experienced some extraordinary need, someone in your family could help.
If you have more children, it would make having family support that much more important.
Just having a family member as someone in whom you have a high level of trust to babysit your child while you and your wife have a dinner out would be nice for your marriage too.
Also, there is something potentially valuable in a child experiencing the joy of cousins. (I couldn’t tell whether you or your wife have nieces or nephews.) Many people treasure the memory of cousins and playing together at grandma’s house…those relationships can be even stronger than friendships.
