Would you move for religious asylum/freedom?

I really do not like what is going on in our government at this point in time. I know Texas wants to secede from the Union and a few other states wanted to do the same. I would be one of the first ones to join that venture if it ever happens. Then we could start all over and uphold our Constitution as it was meant to guide our nation. It was meant to be guided by religious principles and this government has strayed far from that.

Unfortunately, if the Texan 2nd Republic were to be proclaimed now, its principles would be religious, but from a Protestant perspective.

If they wait 3 generations to form the T2R (it won’t happen, but still…) the progressive Chicanization of the place will have changed the balance toward the Catholic Church.

And let us not forget those Christians who are in foreign lands that are Musl*m, and risk their lives daily to be Christian. My uncle is a missionary who was in such a land, and converted many young men who were sons of high up leaders.

So some are already going through this, on a much scarier level than we are. God bless them.

Yes, may God bless them in their very real sacrifice and martyrdom. I remember the words of Cardinal Dolan when he was made a cardinal. How he looked around at those men who came from lands that were really hostile.

Im a 40+ year paraplegic. The Philippines has a long way to go to be accessible for those of us with disabilities, not to mention have the level of health care that I need, so I wouldnt go there personally.

But I can understand why you would chose to move back to your native land. 🙂
Only if push came to shove, naturally. And it depends where you’re talking about. Healthcare is decent if you’re wealthy or part of the urban middle class. And if could be better if the Government did’t spend so much money trying to subsidize the contraceptive industry and picking useless nationalistic fights with the Malaysians.

Malaysia? Say again?

Most people in this country wouldn’t know where that is!

🤷

I’m not targeted as a Catholic. I can practice my religion as always. What I can’t do is make someone else conform to the rules of the Church. I guess if I were to base my freedom on the ability to control others’ actions, then yeah, I’d be targeted. But since I don’t…
AMEN!

Well I don’t understand the high level of exaggeration in this thread. It is one thing to be upset because we can’t force everyone to live by our rules, but that is a far cry from persecution.

There was true persecution during the Christero War in Mexico. Churches were closed, Mass and the sacraments were forbade and people really in fact did have to go underground literally to practice their faith. Priests were slaughtered by the thousands. Bishops were forced to leave Mexico or be executed. Mexico still has an anti-clerical government and it is still illegal for a cleric to wear his collar in public. The Holy Father has canonized many martyrs who were killed at that time and the exact number or martyrs likely in the thousands is still unknown.

And the Armenian Genocide also happened during the last century. The Turkish government tried to kill every Christian in Turkey both Catholic and Orthodox.

And this you try to compare to the church not being able to force everyone to abide by their rules? There is no comparison.

This goes beyond just ordering society in accord with natural law and even divine revelation, good as those goals are too.

We are seeing real threats to our own practices here in this country, such as the contraception mandate or the discrimination cases that same-sex marriage is already occasioning. People may not be getting killed in the streets, but there is still potential for devastating effects to our Church’s ministries and on individual Catholic’s ability to live their lives without the choice between sin and financial ruin. And while organized violent persecution seems like a very distant possibility at this point, things like discrimination suits and hate-speech charges simply for teaching and practicing our faith are very real dangers.

Even if these problems are minor compared to what the faithful are suffering in some countries, a greater evil existing elsewhere does not diminish the real evil here.

In the case of America it also goes beyond these universal principles of religious liberty and natural law. Every nation or culture has its own unique character, its own principles that it particularly stands for. In America religious freedom is near or at the top of that list of national ideals. Even as the rest of the world restricts religion, America is always supposed to be the place that stands firm and really respects this particular liberty. If we lose that then our nation will truly have lost its soul, and a large part of its reason for existence will be gone.

As a native fifth-generation Texan, I can tell you that most of us are not given to carpet baggers coming here and promoting their crazy ideas.

I hope you were not talking to me PacoG. I am far from a carpetbagger my people came here right after the Civil War how ever many generations that is but my ancestors even had slaves. Something I am not proud of.

Of course not. I am referring to the original poster who wrote: “A third option could possibly be acceptable: moving to Texas/other state and promoting secession.”

I am beginning to resent all these carpet baggers coming to Texas. I really dislike how Glenn Beck and others are encouraging people to move to Texas.

To them I say: "don’t bring your problems to Texas. You ruined or allowed others to ruin your state. Now live with the consequences of your actions or inactions. Stay out. . "

Would you move to a nearby country so that you could be openly Catholic? What country would you move to? South of our border might have a reversal of fortune, with Americans sneaking into their country! Or would you go ‘underground’? I know it would depend on the level of persecution suffered, but suppose those were your only two choices. Our founding fathers came to America for that reason (one of the reasons), but we don’t have an option of a country that is uninhabited. A third option could possibly be acceptable: moving to Texas/other state and promoting secession…
As a proud Texan and Tejano, I can only tell you to stay out of my state.

I agree that we are far from "push has come to shove " in this country and there is really nothing all that rosey about other countries when it comes to other just as important issues.

I’m proud to be a 4th generation American. As a disable American I don’t feel likemy rights are being threatened. Intact in my life time they have increased substancically

I’m not bailing out. For all of her challenges and problem I still believe she is the best around. And considering the very large eastern European immigrant population inky state, many around the world see it thesame way…

For all who want to bail out and leave the USA, many an immigrant is wanting to come here. I’m staying put 😃

Agreed!

That made me chuckle! Me being a Brit. and having lived in Malaya, Singapore and Hong Kong - the olde empire and all that [Pax Britannica].

Why is it that so many Americans are geograpically parochial, when their government enjoys the long reach? [Pax Americana]

The short answer is that most Americans don’t care about anything that doesn’t affect them personally, and even then, it must effect them immediately.

Forget about “the greater good; what’s good for the most people; what’s good for those around me; what’s good for the environment; what’s good for my town/city/state/country…”

“WHAT’S GOOD FOR ME?”

A far cry from President Kennedy’s “Ask not…” speech. 😦

The far east isn’t a blip on the radar. I know dozens of people who can’t find Hong Kong on a map, but can locate 36 Dunkin’ Donuts from memory. I don’t blame educators… I blame the people.

You can send a kid to school, but you can’t make him think.

I’ve posted on other threads, but it is appropriate here too: “If you are from a “blue state” you are part of the problem. If you have a (D) after your name, the problem is part of you.”

The Philippines has a long-standing border dispute with Malaysia.
Ok, correction taken. Based on your header, I assumed you were a USAnik.

Our geographic ignorance increases as the cube of distance from US territory, it seems:shrug:
