I know legally if a company mails you an item you purchased twice in the mail you have no legal obligation to send it back. However, say you spent a nice chuck of change (over $100), for a Christmas gift and they sent two for the price of one in two separate packages, would you send it back to just keep it?

Let them know of the error, and ask them if they want it back.

I agree with notifying the company and asking of they want it back; if so they should pay return shipping.

Mary.

Definitely. In a lot of places, returned items can’t be sold. If that’s the case they may very well tell you to keep it because they’re just going to throw it away.

I would send it back or at least offer to pay for it. Keeping it is like stealing.

You wouldn’t be required to send it back at your expense…but you are required to let them know and they will either tell you to keep it (probably not!) or send the UPS truck to pick it up at no cost to you.

Yes, it is stealing not to let them know what happened…mistakes are made, and you didn’t pay for two items. If they tell you to keep it…you are all set!

Had a similar thing happen after the holidays…I was waiting for an order to arrive, and I received another package with some expensive items I had NOT ordered. Someone else’s name and address was on the packing list. I contacted the company and they arranged for a pickup a few days later. Definitely not going to hell for some Nike clothing!!!

^^^All of the above.

When I was a kid I spent some of my paper route money and ordered a Roy Rogers guitar from Sears. (Never could play the thing; didn’t really pick up guitar until I discovered nylon-string classicals, but that’s another story.) Instead of what I ordered, Sears sent their top-of-the-line solid-body electric guitar. I played at it for a few minutes, and then we packed it up, and my father and I took it back downtown to the Sears store.

I’ve done a lot of things in my life that have played havoc with my conscience, but keeping that expensive guitar wasn’t one of them.

If I didn’t do that would it be sin?
Two questions for you:

Why wouldn’t you return it, or at least notify them?

If you were the seller, not a large company but just an individual seller, how would you feel if you inadvertently duplicated an order for a costly item (sent it twice) and the customer kept it?

Forget it. My “Christian wife” criticized me for bringing it up. She said “do what you want, I know you will obsess over it.” She doesn’t think I should contact the company. I was going to. But after seeing her ridicule me and demean me I am done with it. I SHOULD HAVE MARRIED CATHOLIC! I AM SO ANGRY! She just doesn’t understand my faith.

You know the right thing to do. Just do it. You’ll feel better. 🙂

forget it! All my wife does it ridicule me! She puts me down constantly and never backs up my feelings. She has no respect for me. She never has. I am hurting now.

Okay, forget the merchandise. You have much more serious issues that you really need to address first. I am not competent to advise you how to proceed, but some kind of counseling would probably help.

We are here if you want to tell us what’s going on, if you want spiritual or personal advice, or if you would like for us to pray for you.

I pray for you and your wife, that God through his love, mercy, and power will assist you in making your marriage more harmonious and mutually supportive, that God may be glorified by your lives.
