Would you support mandatory tracking devices on all new cars?

We may all be innocent until proven guilty, but we are not all law abiding… many criminals who have committed a crime and used a car. Why should we let criminals get away so easily?

LOVE! 🙂
Many use homes for crimes.

Does that mean that we should give our house keys to the police so they can walk in whenever they want. They would just be checking if we have broken the law.

Oh, wait, we have the 4th Amendment that precludes them from doing just that.

Isn’t it a giant leap to go from tracking devices on our cars to the government seizing our homes?

LOVE! 🙂

The leap was from reading what I wrote and somehow getting “seizing our homes.”

Please show me where I said anything about the government “seizing our homes.”

Why would they seek this information from you if are a law abiding citizen?
Robert, if I’m a law-abiding citizen, why do they need this information? My movements are no one’s business. God bless.

Sorry if I misinterpreted you or if I was vague. You spoke about giving the government the keys to our houses for unreasonable searches, which is a temporary ‘seizure.’

Would these things really happen? Or, are you being pessimistic? Driving has always been a privilege, and applying a tracking device may therefore be fully right and moral.

LOVE! 🙂
They can and they have

The government is not always a benign entity. It is capable of abuses. We.do not need a nanny government.

Government taxes / fees for driving “excessive” miles have already been proposed in several states, to be based on data collected at the annual inspection. No need to facilitate ways to make this easier. In the sense that there is no right to a license, driving is indeed a privilege, but then privacy is a constitutional right. To pick a trivial example, ten years ago could one have predicted that there would be cities in the U.S. that would make both paper bags and plastic bags illegal? That would make it illegal to sell a bottle of water? To pick a much more serious example: who would have imagined a generation ago that it would be illegal for a parent to bring cupcakes to their child’s school, but that condom distribution in that same middle school would be encouraged by the government? “Would these things really happen?” Indeed.

It would not be you that they track, but those in crime investigations, such as when a car is used at the scene of a crime.

LOVE! 🙂

Mandatory tracking devices could help a lot in law enforcement, but could go against one’s rights. Personally, I would strongly support such a law. We need better cooperation between the good of society and individual rights!
Even for the greater good of society? How is having a tracking device on your car an invasion of your personal rights?

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I’m going to assume you’re not a big fan of the current presidential administration and ask you this question… Would you want THAT GUY knowing all your business???

Your intentions (while good at heart) and based on the laughable presumption that our government will act lawfully and ONLY use these GPS trackers for “doing good” and “catching crooks.” Our government is increasingly intruding into our private lives more and more, and you want MORE intrusion?

I’m sorry; but I think you need to think this idea out just a little bit more. I guarantee that it would be perverted and used against us eventually. It would only be a matter of time. The authorities have more than enough means of surveillance at their disposal without needing this to catch the bad guys.

With more and more of our liberties being taken away daily, this is VERY dangerous.

I personally think that it would be a crime NOT to use this technology as a part of law enforcement. Hey, we already use cell phones to track people and I don’t see any complaining (maybe I just can’t see it).

(BTW: I do not pay too much attention who is in office.)

LOVE! 🙂

In crime investigation, a ‘person of interest’ may not have done the crime, but they are ivestiged as if they did the crime until they are clared (or not). I do not support mandatory traking devices on all cars. 🙂

If you don’t see people complaining about it then you’re blind… no offense or anything, but we take just as much issue with that as we do with this car thing.

Wow.

I will pray for you.

Speakfor yourself, Bob.

We should NOT let criminals get away…they should be shot on sight .

… There is way too much potential for abuse.
… Things like this are -always- abused, period.
Agreed. Even if the tracking system were restricted by law and department policy to protect our rights, and that is a big if, there are bound to be a few bad cops and other bad individuals looking to exploit the tracking technology for nefarious purposes.

Here’s a much more frightening scenario which I think has not been brought up yet in this thread. What if the tracking system is hacked by criminals, so they can track whomever they please? Do you want the mob to track your movements, to know when you leave home and when your are heading back home, to know when you are at work, or to be able to find you any time, any place?

Yes, there is way too much potential for abuse.

No need for it, because once we have the driverless car from Google, the govt will already know where we are!
