Why people are not taught to look within? Is it because they may actually find the truth and the church (all churches)can not handle it?

“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

That’s not Scripture. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” is. (Proverbs)

That’s why.

Such centering caters to the ego and is not of the Christian faith or teaching. Relating ourselves as the servant of others is part of that teaching. What looking inside teaches is individual truth. If truth is individual, then it’s survival of the fittest. You and I are both dead in that case. The truth is One and is found outside of the self.

That’s not Scripture.
It is Scripture (Luke 17:21). However, the Greek (entos humon) probably means “among you” rather than “within you.” The preposition means “inside,” but it’s not clear whether it means “inside the group as a whole” or “inside each member of the group.” On the whole, modern scholars seem to incline to the former opinion, and I find it more reasonable as well.

Luke 17:20-21 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, Lo, here it is!' or There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”

A bit of context is needed here, besides another translation that makes it clear that Jesus was in no way rejecting his own Church!

Now if it were true that Jesus never intended a Church be established (contrary to many references that say otherwise in the NT), it would be a WOW!! moment, but since it is a complete and easily proved falsehood it’s only a  moment.

So why did Jesus say this? Th ego knows that this mean its death when we find our true spirit within. If you see it as self centering then that person stops it at the ego level but if you take it to the spirit, your true nature then its freedom.

you mentioned the “ego”, how many churches teach about the ego?

Thanks!

It is Scripture, but it’s probably a bad translation. The Greek (en humin) probably means “among you.”

all my teachings an dthat has always been the translations.
you said,“Probably” what if it is what it is?? How would that change teaching or woul dit?

“The Kingdom of God is in your midst”, yes. True. This verse did come to mind as I was writing my first reply.

Considering the context of the OP, I incorrectly assumed Storm was referring the portion of the Gospel of Thomas where it suggests that the kingdom of God is quite literally everywhere (“Split a log and I am there” etc.) The implication of this verse being that no organized Church is necessary since God’s kingdom is already everywhere and in all things.

My bad.

“in your midst”? I guess its what we are taught. I guess theonly way to find out the truth is to ask GOD.

So why did Jesus say this?
Jesus told them the kingdom of God was in their midst because it was. The King himself was standing right there in front of them and doing his work among them!

Not many because the ego, the superego and the id (if this is the type of “ego” that is being referred to) are Freudian psychological concepts, not spiritual ones.

“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”
For anyone interested, the citation for this verse is Luke 17:21. The NIV, KVJ, and D-R versions use this phrase. The RSV and NAB (and many others) do not. Instead, they translate it as “The Kingdom of God is among you / in the midst of you”. This translation correpsonds with the interpretation that the “Kingdom of God” is Jesus (which Pope Benedict XVI utilizes in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” ;))

I’m not sure what kind of discussion the OP is hoping to get going with his/her question. Yes, God dwells within us, but that doesn’t mean that self-enclosed reflection will lead us into all truth.

We have to look at the content and unity of all Scripture, not just pick one verse and run with it. And we can clearly see in other parts of Scripture where the keys are given to Peter and that the Church will be built upon him and the apostles (and their successors) have the authority to bind and loose, etc.

Storm, what is your ultimate question? What are you ultimately trying to get at? Knowing this might help us answer these side questions better.

Or to ask His Church which he left for us to speak authoritatively on such matters.

What Im trying to get at is that my version is different, I was taught the kingdom of GOD is within us all. other translations speak differently what if you truely hold the key to the key to the kingdom inside you? which translation is right?

I don’t think our theology should be based on one verse. We can look at the theological implications of saying that the Kingdom of God is purely interior and not something that people in Jesus’ time could find by looking around. If that were true, it would follow that Jesus was only a catalyst for interior change. It would seriously weaken the significance of Jesus Himself as embodying the Kingdom. I don’t think that fits with what the New Testament (and Christianity as a whole) has to say about the vital importance of the Incarnation and of Jesus’ bodily death and resurrection. If your translation were both true and of momentous significance, it would not follow that Jesus’ death was of any importance except perhaps as a wakeup call to us to look within. Is that really what you want to argue? Do you really think this fits with the teaching of the NT as a whole?

I see no reason why “entos” with the genitive plural would mean “within each one” rather than “inside the group” (i.e., in your midst). However, it appears that competent Greek scholars have come down on both sides of the issue (generally the older ones seem to go for “within” and the more recent ones for “among”).

The ego is the self. Christ, through His church, teaches “deny yourself” (ego). In scripture, always check the interpretation, as meanings can be changed through various agendas in translation. Others have mentioned the problem with translation.

no offense but another person’s interpretation, I rather ask GOD.
Thanks!
If God speaks to you directly without mediation, why are you reading Scripture in the first place? If God speaks to you through Scripture, why not learn Greek or consult Greek scholars? Or do you think that the KJV is itself an inspired translation? If so, why?
