Pardon my ignorance, but why was this bit anti-Catholic?

I’m an ex-Catholic. I had reasons for leaving the Church. Is it anti-Catholic if I talk about them? Are you really going to protest people disagreeing with you?

They didn’t say Catholics worship Mary.
They didn’t say Catholicism is anti-biblical.
They didn’t call the Pope a Nazi.
They didn’t say Catholics weren’t real Christians.
They didn’t say that Catholics started all the wars.
They didn’t spread any lies about the Church at all.

No one said anything offensive that I can see, at least in the bit that you posted. No one said anything other than they disliked going, and they thought that questioning your faith was a good thing. I’ve heard that from Catholics.
I am a Catholic and I agree 100% with your take on this dialogue. I saw Bill Maher at the beginning of the segment, and braced myself for the very worst. Boy, was I relieved that the comments were so innocuous. I don’t agree with the blonde gals analysis, but I don’t doubt her sincerity. Nothing said there was anything that I wouldn’t occasionally hear among Catholics themselves.

With so much anti-Catholic & anti-Christian sentiment today, it is easy to get too sensitive to any minor infraction. I know I am that way about the abortion issue. You can’t help but cringe. Frankly, whenever someone says Bill Maher to me, I think of the Three Stooges skit - “Niagara Falls. Slowly I turned. Step by step…” that is, a buzzword that makes one go berserk.

I have an idea! I think that we should write to the producers of The View and suggest that they have Tim Staples on as a guest so he can explain things to Elizabeth. 😃

Sideline – I agree with you in that her remarks, per se, weren’t anti-Catholic… but her tone seemed to be. At any rate, it’d be nice if they could have a Catholic apologist on the show so they could get a more balanced view of the issues they discuss, KWIM?

If Tim Staples sold over a million copies of a book, was funny, and good at interviews… he would have already been invited.

There is one thing you seem to be missing. Jokes are about a million times more fun to watch than sermons. It’s a t.v. opinion show- it’s not the news. It’s not an educational broadcast- it’s an entertainment program.

As for the tone, she probably doesn’t like the Church all that much. Why do you care? Bill O’Reilly is a complete jerk, but I don’t send letters complaining about his tone of voice. I just don’t watch him. I certainly wouldn’t help his exposure by posting links to his interviews and suggest people create buzz around him by starting a letter writing campaign. I don’t want to help him in the ratings. I’m surprised at myself for even mentioning his name, come to think about it.

You want to spread information about what confession really is? Teach CCD or start a program in your church for people who have lost touch with why the Church does things the way they do. I would have lapped that up with a spoon when I was in the Church… really. It would have been a lot more fun going to mass if I understood why we went from our knees to standing on our feet so often it felt like a calisthenics class. I never did catch that, and I certainly wasn’t anti-Catholic. Nor was I an idiot.

Tim Staples has sold quite a few books and CD sets. I’m not sure if the number is 1 million or more, but I’d guess it’d be close to that. He is funny, and very good at interviews. The reason he’s never been invited is because the ladies at The View are not interested in the truth; they’re interested in their own opinions only.

I don’t think it’s funny to talk about how confusing you think an entire belief system is.

Have you ever seen Tim Staples’ presentations? I assure you he’s quite funny.

I care because she’s sending a bad message about Catholicism to the people watching her show.

Many parishes do have such a program, and there’s an online one as well: Catholics Come Home. I’m sorry your home parish had such terrible catechesis.

I just did a quick search on Amazon.com. The least popular book by Bill Maher I could find was selling better than the best selling book by Tim Staples.

You are right that they don’t care about the truth… they care about ratings. Just like everyone else who wants to keep their job in television.

Do you regularly watch The View? Are you their core demographic?
Have you ever seen Tim Staples’ presentations? I assure you he’s quite funny.
I watched about 15 minutes of him on the web. He didn’t smile during any of the the clips I saw. If you weren’t interested in the subject, he wouldn’t have made it interesting to you. I certainly wouldn’t book him if I wanted anyone to watch a show I was doing.

What bad message? You guys keep saying that. What did she say that bothered you? She didn’t have a good experience being Catholic. Many don’t. If you cant deal with people disagreeing with you, I dont know how you would get through the average day.

You have no idea how much reading your post cheered me up. As a former Catholic, I still have a fondness for Catholicism. I like to think that Catholics are more rational and reasonable on subjects than many other faiths.

Thank-you!

Labeling something as anti-Catholic should only be used when people are purposely speaking out against the Church. This woman was merely expressing her misunderstanding of what the Sacrament of Penance is all about…it’s unfortunate that many people may think that her position makes sense, but it is hardly anti-Catholic.
Yeh! There is more than one Catholic who has this opinion. :extrahappy:

Okay, Im feeling happy. Im going to go to another web site now.

Why are you so angry?
