I am a Catholic and I agree 100% with your take on this dialogue. I saw Bill Maher at the beginning of the segment, and braced myself for the very worst. Boy, was I relieved that the comments were so innocuous. I don’t agree with the blonde gals analysis, but I don’t doubt her sincerity. Nothing said there was anything that I wouldn’t occasionally hear among Catholics themselves.Pardon my ignorance, but why was this bit anti-Catholic?
I’m an ex-Catholic. I had reasons for leaving the Church. Is it anti-Catholic if I talk about them? Are you really going to protest people disagreeing with you?
They didn’t say Catholics worship Mary.
They didn’t say Catholicism is anti-biblical.
They didn’t call the Pope a Nazi.
They didn’t say Catholics weren’t real Christians.
They didn’t say that Catholics started all the wars.
They didn’t spread any lies about the Church at all.
No one said anything offensive that I can see, at least in the bit that you posted. No one said anything other than they disliked going, and they thought that questioning your faith was a good thing. I’ve heard that from Catholics.
With so much anti-Catholic & anti-Christian sentiment today, it is easy to get too sensitive to any minor infraction. I know I am that way about the abortion issue. You can’t help but cringe. Frankly, whenever someone says Bill Maher to me, I think of the Three Stooges skit - “Niagara Falls. Slowly I turned. Step by step…” that is, a buzzword that makes one go berserk.
