Xavier relics draw thousands

Thousands venerated the relics of Saint Francis Xavier on Dec. 3, when his feast was celebrated in Old Goa’s Bom Jesu Basilica where his remains are housed.

An estimated 100,000 people filed past the relics seeking blessings as churches across the world observed the feast of the saint, who preached the Gospel in several Asian countries.

A major portion of the saint’s body, termed as the “sacred relics of St Francis Xavier” rests in a crystal urn that has been encased in a silver casket kept atop a marble mausoleum in the basilica.

Until some 50 years ago, these relics were known as “incorrupt body of St Francis Xavier.” The terminology was changed after doctors who examined the body reported that much of the parts were missing. . . .
