At least that’s what I was always taught as a Mormon. I am sure a lot of you have already heard this. I just wondered how your Mormon friends explain it it to you, or do they avoid it? From the Book of Mormon:

And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.

Of course I don’t really believe that you’re Satan worshipers. I have been to mass enough times to know what the Spirit feels like. It’s definitely not one of Satan’s hangouts.

Any church that states nonbelievers get a blanket ticket to Hell -especially Christian ones- have something off. Jesus saved all and will save all, even non-Catholics. This has been confirmed by the Pope that we may not understand the mystery of salvation and how those who never had a chance to believe, yet were still faithful to Godly principles, will be saved.

Ha, I was taught the same. Mormons who’ve come here in the past say the passage you posted is not about the Catholic Church.

All in all, I came to the conclusion that Mormonism works pretty hard at inoculating people against the truth. I believe Jospeh Smith will have a LOT to answer for at his judgement.

One of the apostles of the Mormon Church, Bruce R. McConkie wrote a book, Mormon Doctrine wherein he said that this scripture was specifically about the Catholic church. He got a lot of pressure from the top and the second edition of the book had the references to the Catholic church removed. In any case, any church who is not their definition of the Lamb of God is of Satan.

Sounds pretty clear to me that y’all are still included.

Actually, my Mormon relative talks about good works, not about Satan. She thinks it is about doing good throughout life and that one cannot turn to Jesus near the end of life and be saved, because that person didn’t do enough good works, or somehow that the life can’t be turned around at that point by God.

She never read the parable about the laborers in the field?

I’m sure she has, but she specifically says Catholics are wrong about that people can convert late after a long life ill spent.

I don’t know, I think it is an anti-Catholic sentiment for sure, but maybe also a judging one. Perhaps if I could get her to speak rationally about it, it would ultimately relate to some issue with sacraments and grace. I suspect Mormons have a different view of the place of good works than we do, a stronger emphasis on works.

I’m going to seriously believe a book written by a nutty guy from upstate New York in the 1800s over thousands of years of enduring Church history and teachings? Riiiight.

Catholics have been called evil and idolaters and Satan worshippers by lots of other faiths. The Seventh- Day Adventist have said the same thing in even nastier language. Evangelicals too. Can’t say as I care. If we were such a phoney-baloney Satan-worshipping bunch, people wouldn’t be going to martyrdom for the faith, forgiving their enemies and with expressions of bravery and peace.

Given the enormous number of people born into this religion, I don’t think we can really fault many for initially believing this.

cant delete a post once it is already posted so just had to edit it to absolutely nothing so i can just move on.

I don’t understand your comment. “Born into this religion” - do you mean Catholics, or are you referring to the LDS who believe the things they do because they were born into it?
I also didn’t fault anyone for believing anything, but I pointed out that it seems unbelievable to me.

I don’t judge other people’s religions. I don’t go around saying LDS are evil or bad or worship Satan because they do things differently from me. It would be my wish that ALL good people, including non-Christians and nonbelievers, would one day be in Heaven together.

I’m generally not a fan of any religion, or any purportedly religious person, who condemns other faiths or other churches. I know the Catholic Church in the now-distant past engaged in some of this, but I would hope we have now moved on beyond it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the Mormon Church teach that Jesus and Satan are brothers?

I was referring to your “disbelief” over believing the LDS teachings. While you were speaking for yourself, it sounded like a blanket statement that could be very offensive to our brethren who were raised in the LDS faith and truly believed in Joseph Smith. I know a few Mormons and they value his writings tremendously. I guess I just found your initial statement one that would drive others from the conversation, rather than attract them to.

I agree that religions that encourage the abuse of others are highly suspect and have something wrong. I was badly, badly abused and tortured by 7th Day Adventist as a child because they believed I was hell bound and the adults did nothing because they, too, believed it was fine for their children to act that way to someone who was going to hell.

Personally, I have found that LDS are much more generous towards Catholics than many Protestant groups having been harmed at the hands of 7th Day and Jack Chic lovers. I’ve always found that while LDS may fear hell for Catholics they are no-where near as cruel as others because they have other principals that enforce mercy.

Yeah, that book was popular when I was a teenager (and still Mormon). Seminary and Sunday school teachers made it a point then to point out that the Roman Catholic Church was the church of the devil. Mormonism has strong anti-Catholic vein running through it. But their approach more recently is to say their church of the devil teaching isn’t about any particular church. Particularly when discussing this teaching among Catholics. But get Mormons talking amongst themselves, and the discussions are a whole lot different.

But again, you’ll find individual Mormons believe different things and there are definitely anti-Catholic Mormons and others who are not. Mormon teachings and story telling are laced heavily with using the Roman Catholic Church as the Bad Guy. It is inherent in the foundation of the religion. Bashing Catholicism and in general Christianity, is what Mormonism stands on.
