On second thought, I’ll bite as did you raise some interesting questions.
Most people are glad it is in place.
Are you sure about that? My hunch would have been that most would be indifferent, a handful would be happy about it, and a handful, like you said, would find the moderation annoying. But you could be right. That would be an interesting poll to take.
Most of do not want to read uncharitable comments,
What does and doesn’t constitute uncharitable comments is largely subjective. It is true that different people will be set off by different things. It’s not really possible to eliminate all emotional friction in any productive discussion. I do actually think it is good that CAF retains the possibility of deleting posts for rare occasions, although I’d argue that if done too much it takes away from the quality of these forums. You and I would likely disagree about where that line is. That being said, even if CAF isn’t as good a forum as it could be, it’s still a pretty interesting place where a lot of good discussion happens. So that’s the more serious answer to why I don’t leave being of a single minor nuisance. The good still mostly outweighs the bad, in my opinion.
There’s going to be give-and-take in any disagreement. I’ve admitted that I’m willing to tolerate the moderation, even though I see it as occasionally getting in the way of a productive conversation. Mods (or forum rules, as the case may be) aren’t perfect and I don’t expect them to be. So, even if I gripe after a comment gets deleted or a temporary suspension, I don’t take it personally, but just assume that the mods are attempting to do their jobs as best they can. Likewise not every comment that seems uncharitable to you is necessarily a personal attack. Often the person posting the seemingly offensive comment is doing so in good faith to make a point they think legitimate, and legitimately considers strong language to be the appropriate manner of making the point. Whether or not they are sensible in thinking so is besides the point of whether the comment is “uncharitable”, which is a subjective thing, having to do with the intent of the person.
