Well after Santa came yesterday my children decided they wanted to play with their friends… Well since it’s freezing cold and one of my good friends-neighbor-is having issues with Christmas, they were not in a good mood to celebrate at all…And didn’t want visitors…
When I tried to explain to my kids they were all disappointed and sad because they hadn’t seen their friend in many weeks, their mother, my neighbor-friend, has been keeping him as far away as possible from anyone… Even though she asked for advise on how to deal with Christmas this year and how she didn’t want to rub her lack of enthusiasm and appreciation for Christmas to her son, she didn’t listen to reason and kept him locked up…
I called her to wish her a Merry Christmas, she didn’t answer…About 2 hours later she called and wished the same… By then the kids wanted to drop off his gift, my friend’s son’s gift… So I walked them over there, we knocked on the door, and her son opened the door. She was in the bathroom and I told him he didn’t have to bother her that we were just wishing him a Merry Christmas since I had all ready spoken with his mother… And that the kids wanted to give him a gift…
He had this angry look on his face and a look of frustration… then he changed to a look of confusion and was surprised… The kids were so glad to share with him this little gift and wished him a Merry Christmas… He took the gift and thanked them… Before we started saying our good byes and walking back home my kids told him they were so happy that Santa came and asked him if Santa had come to his house…
He started laughing and told them they were “idiots” and that Santa didn’t exist… That his mother was his Santa and that I was my children’s Santa, and as soon as I heard him I interrupted him as fast as I could… Perhaps it was wrong for me to do so but I asked him to please call his mother, I needed to talk to him… when he was like “yeah sure but let me finish!” I interrupted him again and told him to please call to her… He screamed for her and when I saw he wouldn’t go back into his house, I sent my disappointed, frozen and surprised kids home… Then I told him I had to go…And just left…
I told my kids about St. Nicholas, and that Santa was indeed real… When he lived and gave and how he was still living and giving… I didn’t go into the whole fakeness deal too much nor how Santa is just a spirit of giving since I didn’t stop believing in Santa until I was a teen and I loved the whole innocence of Christmas and hope to keep this innocence for my kids…
Now my daughter has this doubt big time, since as soon as she was able to she got in contact with our neighbor’s son again and he told her that the parents hide the gifts…She told me that her other friend said the same thing last year… And I asked her if she believed in Santa or what 2 people have said???
She answered she did believe in Santa…And that she just didn’t understand that if she believed in him and others didn’t why they couldn’t just keep their comments to themselves???
Even though she’s still with the little seed of doubt planted, she’s trying to make the best of it… I know next year I will have to hear it again, and even though I feel she’s not ready yet for the whole truth, I will continue to keeping St. Nichola’s love of giving alive, and we will continue our Santa time with my children…Hopefully I will not have to explain too much next year and hopefully I will have a couple of more years to tell her the truth…
I haven’t spoken with my friend since Christmas and I do hope she and her son are having a great time… I know they are supposed to be with her sister today so hopefully they will have a great weekend!!
Even though I understand everyone has different ways or beliefs, I don’t let my children influence other’s with what they believe unless I know it’s about a sinful action…and they have been asked for their opinions…
In the midst of it all, my kids were so happy they were able to receive some Santa gifts even though they were afraid they were all in the naughty list!!!
