The following is copied and pasted from my email, my name is withheld.

Reverend
--------(Scylla)

The Universal Life Church has sent your application for ordination from ULC MONASTERY in Tucson, Arizona to Modesto, California. Providing that you filled out the form properly with your legal first and last name, it will be approved and entered into the International Database of the Ministry of the Church, whose numbers are in excess of 20 million ordained ministers worldwide.

The Universal Life Church has only two tenets (beliefs/doctrine):

. to promote freedom of religion and
. to do that which is right.

It is the responsibility of the individual to determine what is right as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others and is within the law.

As a minister with the ULC, its own denomination, you are granted the following rights:

. To perform marriages within any US state, following the rules laid out by the state in which
you wish to perform said marriage.

. To perform funerals, baptisms, last rites or any other sort of legal ceremony or ritual you
wish to perform, except circumcision.

. To start a church of your own, be it a bricks and mortar building or on the internet.

. To absolve others of their sins as you have been absolved of yours.

I copied and pasted this off of my confirmation email, which I received from ULC. I now have a certificate and am officially a pastor! (As of March 11th, a couple weeks ago)
I did this to make a point of course, I wouldn’t try and start my own church. That would be evil and maybe indanger my soul unless I repented and closed down the church) But now when I talk to any pastor about the Catholic Church, I can mention that I am a pastor also, just as much as he is!

Just as a side note, please don’t call me reverend or pastor unless you are doing it in a joking manner. I don’t claim any title for myself, as I don’t want to commit the sin of Simon Magus. I do this to make a point of the validity of the name pastor for those who claim themselves as such.

All you did to become a “minister” was to fill out an online form?

I sure could save some money for people if they want to get married too!

So far no junk mail from ULC either, that was what I was most worried about, when I filled out the form.

OK. But I can called you Revered can’t I?

Just don’t call me late for dinner. 🙂

(except I am not sure what that joke really means) I just hear it a lot and it sounds funny.

Maybe friendly neighborhood Catholic is better…

Hi scylla,

I realise you may have done this tongue in cheek, but by getting ordained outside the Catholic Church, you may have unknowingly left the Catholic Church.

I know you have stated that you will not be starting your own church.

I may be wrong on this, so I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong

I believe you have to KNOW that this will excommunicate you for it to be an automatic excommunication. It may, however, actually be an impediment to Holy Orders, depending on whether or not the your Bishop actually takes this situation seriously. Since it was done as a tongue-in-cheek and meant to be humorous (not serious or intending to practice your "orders), I would think most Bishops would chuckle and let the matter go.

I ordained a friends cat in that church. He can now legally do marriages. Of course he is also excommunicated for being ordained in a non-Catholic church. He will surely burn.

Scylla, I’m pretty sure that you have to have intent and knowledge. And, you exposed them for the sham they are and that is a good. This being said, to the extent there is a wrong is to the extent there is mockery in the limited truth to their “church”-“to do what is right.” However, even to that degree, sarcasm isn’t a sin w/o intent to harm.

I know that my comment here can be taken wrong but when I read this OP I was kind of taken a back… It kind of seems you are making fun of those who truly do become pastors and ministers with a heart for God. Just call you ‘Reverend’ in a joking manner? Are you saying that it is a comical thing, as if the title is something that is to be made of? I am kind of surprised at you Scylla… Coming from the protestant side of things you should know how much of an offense your attitude towards being a pastor or minister is. And to put this in the ‘Non-Catholic Religions’ forum just shows that you wanted to make sure that protestants saw this thread…

I think any minister (Protestant or Catholic) who studies years to earn a title of this distinction would be offended and so would a faithful lay person who gives these people there right respect for their efforts and learning. Because Scylla can fill out an application like this on the internet and get ordained, Scylla just exposed them for the scam they are.

Oh, dear…Due to the non-function of my printer, the Reverend Lily Daisy has:crying: no hard copy of her ordination!!!

Singin, I am one of the other protestants here, & I had heard of these people before, & am laughing, too.
As I said in my 1st post, Johnny Carson did this on his show years ago. It was then, as this is now, a jab–not at real pastors–but at the people who call themselves the Reverend Whatsisname, & start their own religion up…
The ULC is an affront to all ministers, priests, rabbis, etc!!

Singing, I do not intend on taking this seriously. This website I signed up on just exposes the mockery that is self ordination. It would be evil for me to even in any sense utilize this, start my own church or act like it means anything.

There are many holy people who dedicate their lives to serving Jesus as Pastors, Reverends etc… I am pretty sure that the majority of them do not go to a website and start their own church.

That is the comedy of ULC, and why I did it since I do not take it seriously at all. Now what would be rude of me would be to mock some of the more mainline denominations(like Calvary Chapel) who have a good intent, as I know many people who truly seek Jesus there instead of just money, power, or influence by starting their own church.

No offense intended, except maybe to ULC as the evil they are promoting is dangerous.

I was wondering about that as well, though of course if there is no real serious attempt to leave the Church and form your own, then the title would thus be in name only.

A fake ordination is a mistreatment of the Sacrament of Ordination…I’d talk to a Priest about this if I were you.

It isn’t even and ordination, it is an online form! Heck I didn’t even read the requirements, so there is no intent to follow through with any of it, but it does illustrate the absurdity of it all. I will ask a priest though and confess my misplaced humor if necessary. I wont get ordained online again, I just wanted to see if it would work and for the humor of it.
