YouCat and masturbation

Why not just give young adults the real CCC.
This sentance shows a serious misunderstanding of both the CCC and YouCat. The CCC is a reference book. It is not designed for cover-to-cover reading or even for topical reading. If you look up a topic in the cross-reference section, you may be referred to 10 or more paragraphs in different parts of the CCC. Again, it’s a reference book like a dictionary or the PDR.

The YouCat is designed to give an overview of various topics of the Catholic Faith. It is like a text book. It references you back to the CCC as the source of its content.

BTW, the USCCB Adult Catechism is set up the same way but for a different audience.

It is not an either-or choice. The preface to the CCC specifically says that it is to be used to develop more targeted Catechism books. The Adult Catechism and YouCat are two of those targeted books.

Sorry but anybody that calls a CCC intended for young adults the “YouCat” is just silly.

Seriously, who thinks of this stuff?:rotfl: YouCat, really?:rotfl: Why not just give young adults the real CCC. Or better yet, let them read Summa Theologica, by Thomas Aquinas or maybe some papal encyclicals? YouCat sounds like an internet cat meme…lol

Anyway, the Youth Catechisms words on masturbation (with regard to this section at least) are ambiguous at best. However, what they said is not wrong either, it just shows theological ignorance. Now in no way do I pretend to be a theological expert, but even I could give a better statement about such a sin…
Let’s be careful calling the pope silly; he does have good intentions in making the catechism, and he is the successor of St. Peter on earth, the leader of God’s Church. Otherwise, good job reading reading works like you mentioned; keep carrying the torch of trtuh.👍

Anyone who criticizes me for criticizing this catechism should read up on their catholic history. Was Catherine of Siena wrong in admonishing the pope to return to Rome? The pope is a man, and needs advice in matters where he does not speak infallibly just as anyone does. And typically, the pope doesn’t speak infallibly without consulting theologions anyway. Blind obedience to everything the pope does and wants is not catholic either.

Here we go, another one that thinks he knows more than the Bishops do.

Here we go, another one that thinks he knows more than the Pope does.

Why do we even need Apostolic succession and education for our ordained people when we can all be protestants lead by know it all teenagers?
I never implied that I am smarter than anybody, lest a Bishop:eek:

I was comenting on calling the Youth Chatechism the “YouCat”. It sounds so silly. Now its content is a differnet story;).

But statistical studies and pre-market testing have shown that the name “YouCat” has a hipness quotient of 68% – which is well above average – and should therefore effectively resonate with 7 out of 10 Catholic teens and 4 out of 10 non-Catholic teens. In terms of the Big Three R’s (Recognizability, Repeatability, and Rockability), “YouCat” beat out all of its competitors including “CatLite”, “TeenCat”, “CathCat”, and “CatKit”.

If you can get a group of teens to read through the Summa or through papal encyclicals, please come back and share your secret. 😉

It’s not dumbing something down to make catechetical materials available at an age-appropriate level. Even the good ol’ Baltimore Catechism has different books for different age groups. We don’t give second-graders Advanced Calculus textbooks because we’re afraid that teaching them their times table is dumbing down math for them.

The YouCat uses much more basic, understandable language in answering most of the lingering questions that people have about the faith. If it’s between that and someone reading through the CCC with a blank look on their face, I’ll take the YouCat.

If a person is motivated and wants to go through the CCC, I would absolutely recommend doing that over reading the YouCat. But a lot of Catholics just aren’t there. People need milk before they can eat solid food. We don’t criticize the milk and pour it down the drain because solid food is better.
I would like to state that I did not mean to offend anybody. The internet is bad at making use of context…

I agree with your milk anology. However, were not talking about little kids here. I am sure the “YouCat” (:Dlol) has good content, however thats not what I was bringing into question. I was simply poking fun at the name “YouCat”. It sounds like an internet cat meme. I was being immature. Why not call it the Youth Catechism. Or how about just give teens the CCC with a more orthodox, adult oriented guide book to help them understand what requires clarification. Trust me as a highschooler, most students are reading shakespear in their English classes, and I am sure they can understand the CCC, which was only writen in the 1980’s (??) and is in plain english. However, if that dosent help, have a teacher or a parent, or maybe even a youth leader (in a Church Youth Group environment) give them clarification when it is needed. A teenager dosent require “youth” oriented reading material to come to understand and love Jesus and His Church. I certanly didnt, although I have read my fair share of “youth” oriented Catholic publications which bore little spiritual fruit for me (although there are exceptions, Chatity.org is one).

Now having read large parts of the CCC, I can tell you that as a fourteen year-old, it made perfect sence to me, as do papal encyclicals, the Syllabus of Modern Errors, and other more orthodox Catholic material. I would recomend that, as a teenager, the best way to get teenagers motivated to practice Catholisism is to give them orthodox material and encourage frequent sacraments. Not to mention the Theology of the Body “for teens” despite its corny name, is a good, orthodox way to present traditional Church teaching in an understandable, clear, unambiguous way with regard to sexual morality. Now thats a rare find after sifting through the loads of “Youth” oriented material.👍👍

Now in no way do I pretend to be an expert on anything. I am simply giving my humble opinion based on my personal experiences.

God Bless and Ave Maria!:signofcross:

Your correct. See my other posts above.

I never hear any teens saying the word “YouCat” at my Church youth group, so it cant be all that “hip”. Not to mention, does one really think teens these days care about “hipness”? If one were give it a good Catholic name like “Pocket Chatechism Guide for Catholics” or “The Catholic’s Chatechismal Reference” or even “Catholic Youth Pocket Chatechism”, I think it will resonate with 10 out of 10 Catholic teens:D:thumbsup:

How much the teens say the word has little to do with their belief in its contence.:yup:

Since it’s only been out a few weeks, it may be a little soon to hear anyone referring to it in youth group. 😉 However, I seriously doubt you would ever hear a teen or adult regularly call something “The Catholic’s Chatechismal (is that even a real word?) Reference”. It would be called the CCR. 🙂

Keep in mind that the title of the book was not decided to “resonate” specifically with teens in NJ. It was chosen for all of the youth who might use the book in the English speaking Church. Youth, in Church-speak, is teenage to young 30s.

YouCat is fine. You can always write the Vatican and volunteer to be on the naming committee next time around.

That is funny, because I have had about a dozen ask me about it. I work at our local Catholic bookstore.

I think that you are still missing one very specific point. YouCat is aimed at everybody, and that includes most of the secular wannabe cool hipster teenagers that barely put their foot inside a Church. The so called “good Catholic kids” probably already have different copies of catechetical books at home, and probably their parents are serious about doctrinal teaching. However, most of the target audience, and their parents too, is probably unaware of some of the basic teachings of the Church.

Those I know teaching theology to college freshman have found that the CCC (and even the Compendium) are beyond where most of them are at. Now they’re switching to YouCat.

If a student is on fire for the faith and excited to learn, going through the CCC (and asking clarifications for any of the $5 theology terms one doesn’t know) would be great. But I don’t think that’s where the majority is at. Even my mother has to ask me questions when reading through the CCC. Not all are called to be theologians. 😛

I was just joking about the “hipness quotient.” I think that finding “YouCat” to be a silly name is a valid opinion. But they have to call it something. 😉

DAAVEED1590 don’t lose your vocation because of the bashing they are giving you. This can be a rough place.

I am not sure if this a joke or not
“CatLite”, “TeenCat”, “CathCat”, and “CatKit”. Those are even sillier titles. Some are almost impossible to pronounce eg cathcat. whew!

The title YouCat is not a joke but the official title for the document at least in the USA. It appears to me that the title is the same independently of the language in which it is translated but I am not 100% sure.

Yes, I was making a joke. I thought it was obvious through my ubiquitous and arbitray use of silly terms like “hipness quotient.” Next time, I’ll use more emoticons. 😉 😛 😃 :o

How do you call the Catechism for the early Christians in Rome?:hmmm:

CataComb! :rotfl:

LOL

I need to find my glasses.

I thought the title read: Your cat and masturbation.

Yikes.

I was trying to give alternate names to call a guide that helps one to understand the CCC, other than “YouCat”. I don’t expect anyone to call something like “The Catholic’s Catechismal (I did make up that word;)) Reference” the full name every time they mention it. What I am trying to present is that one is more likely to take something called the CCR seriously than something called the “YouCat”. In fact, most teens would think you were referring to something akin to “lolCat” or “standing Cat” or even “OMG Cat”.
