I am most certainly interested in truth. Truth that God will reveal, not science. This is an example of putting science before God.
And just how is God going to reveal the truth to you? Is he going to come into your dreams and give you the cure to cancer? I don’t think he will, but I do think he has provided us the tools to do so.

God does reveal truth to us; one way is through science. God is telling us how the universe works through science. To say that this putting science before God doesn’t make any sense. That’s like saying, “You’re putting Greek philosophy before Socrates.”

No, it’s not putting science before God. Petroleum producers don’t read the Bible to find out where to drill for oil. They read maps of the historical geology of the planet to determine where on these drifting continents it would be wisest to invest ten million dollars in a drill hole. Without the science of geology, you wouldn’t be driving around in your car, whatever exciting things you may find in scripture!👍

Actually some of them do, see Zion Oil. This will give us a fair comparison between the Bible and Petroleum Geology as a source of knowledge about oil. My suggestion: sell Zion Oil.

OK – this news story is three years old. What was the result?

Of course we need “to bother with it.” Catholics are interested in the truth, and Catholic scientists need to know the age of the earth and of the universe in order to function; in order to lay out the glories of God’s universe to our eyes.

The Catholic Church has not ruled infallibly as to the age of the earth. Since science is being manipulated so badly by an anti-God mindset, I find it less trustworthy today than I did in the 1960s when I was learning about it.

Peace,
Ed

Who cares whether the church has ruled infallibly on the age of the earth? How is that in the slightest degree relevant to anything? There are many things on which the church has not ruled infallibly, such as how many base pairs there are in the genome of the domestic cat.

God is going to reveal the truth in different ways. Most likely not through a dream, but in some cases yes. He has provided us to tools to do practically everything. Yes it does makes sense that someone would put science before God. Science is starting to become a religion of its own. I don’t understand the analogy on philosphy and Socrates because I know nothing about Socrates other than just hearing the name.

How is it not putting science before God. No you don’t need the Bible to find out where to drill for oil.God has given us virtually anything we wanted. Science has become a bunch of meaningless theories.“Let experiement with this and see how this works”

couldn’t agree with you much more. Even though I am only 26, I still have much to learn. We rely on God first and what he has given us and use what he has given us to the best of our abilities and not make “educated guesses” as what science is doing these days. How many failed products or recalls have there been in the last decade?? Yes we have rely on science when demonstrated properly, such as surgery but we must put faith in God first. Still when we are in need we go to God first and seek professional help because God gave them the knowledge and it isn’t a meaningless theory. We have used science for good but we have also used it for bad and more so bad lately. There is no way that a scientist can determine that the world is 4.5 billion years old by looking an examining a rock and nor can they say that evolution exist there is no factual evidence that proves it. There are things that were aren’t to know. Lets face it.

Ridiculous! If science is “a bunch of meaningless theories,” how is it that medical progress has made such tremendous strides against cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders? How is it that cosmologists have narrowed the age of the universe down to 13.7 billion years, instead of to 13.6 or 13.8? How is it that genetic scientists have sequenced the human genome, isolating the genes responsible for countless phenotypical features? How is it that climate scientists have been able to predict the landfall and ferocity of hurricanes like Katrina and Ike, saving countless lives?

Next time you are terrified at the possibility of an emerging avian flu, I’ll bet you won’t be saying “science has become a bunch of meaningless theories.”👍

obvious that science is greater than God by your standards???

why is circular reasoning the norm on this forum?

if you, tobinatorstark, had a kid exposed to smallpox, I have no doubt whatsoever your anti-science rant would end and your kid got his vaccination even if it was from the Atheists R Us Free Clinic.

I do not konw for certain, though I would suspect that if any large oil reserves had been found in Israel we would have seen it on the news somewhere. In this case the absence of news probably means that they have not found anything yet.

Well let’s look at the medical cases. Most of this is done through trial and error. It is done first on animals with good reason.

So we take 10,000 people and subject them to a drug. We run the trials and then post the results. If the results are good enough then the population can benefit.

In primitive cultures, the same thing happened. They watched what the animals ate. If the animals keeled over then it was a good bet they shouldn’t feed this to their kids.

Now I do agree we have accelerated and refined this process. However, many people still die, because the drugs are not completely effective.

Hurricane tracks are best guesses.

yes, let’s look at medical protocols, such as this one from Stanford, be sure to read “Emergency Use”, and here’s some federal regulations from 21 Code of Federal Regulations chapter 56. I don’t expect you to read this, or even understand it, but you must comprehend that your caricature of this issue is overly simplistic and very, very inaccurate.

see above. you’re wrong again.

you mean like grass?

so, you’re making the assertion, how many?
Hurricane tracks are best guesses.
you’re telling me you’d keep your family from evacuating because you think the weather service just makes a “best guess”? hundreds of thousands of people and billions of dollars in commerce vote otherwise.

anything else?

You make really good points. I guess some people don’t get it all. I still feel a lot of people put science before God and that is wrong. We do need science when it is demonstrated properly. I just find it funny how many scientist and people in general rely on determining what God has in store for us through science. A scientist can’t determine what year Christ will come back to earth for the second coming.

Never underestimate. That is a sure sign of arrogance. You have just lost a few points of respect. :tsktsk:

Oversimplistic. It’s funny how irreducibly complexity is ridiculed, but here is a case that is exactly what science is built on. I have reduced it and you are not happy.

Uh NO! that’s not what I said. If the weather service says that a hurricane is a day away from hitting me I am out of there. But if the weather service says in a month you will be hit, I think I am just going to stick around a little longer, and so would you.🙂

I don’t know what you think you’ve “reduced”, or even what the word means as you’re using it.

does the weather service predict landfall locations a month in advance, or are you making another uninformed assertion?
