I agree. They painted themselves into a corner, maybe going all the way back to Bush I. I think it was Donald Trump himself who said the reason why the Republicans won’t support too many immigration reforms is because they know it will add up to 11 million votes for the Democrats immediately.

And don’t forget that Asian vote.
  • Obama had a pivitol vote in 2007 that helped to block comprehensive immigration reform:
The short story is that the immigration bill was the work of a small, bipartisan group of senators. Late in the game, Mr. Obama joined the process, where he asked for (and received) changes in the bill. Yet when the legislation moved forward, Mr. Obama backed a series of poison-pill amendments. One was pushed by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D., N.D.) to weaken the guest-worker program. Sen. Ted Kennedy (D., Mass.) was outraged because he knew this amendment was really organized labor’s effort to kill the immigration bill, not to help workers. “Who is the senator from North Dakota trying to fool?” Mr. Kennedy snapped from the Senate floor.
Mr. Obama voted “yea” on the Dorgan amendment. We know he knew it was a deal-killer because several senators had said so (Sen. Jim DeMint, who had voted “nay” on an earlier version, switched his vote for precisely that reason). Thus Mr. Obama pulled off a trifecta: appeasing Big Labor while telling Latinos he supported the bill and blaming Republicans for its failure…What makes Mr. Obama’s 2007 Senate vote so galling—and different from that of others who voted the same way—was that his support for the poison pills betrayed the bipartisan group of senators who had let him in on the writing of the bill.
That did not happen even when Obama had a majority democrat house and senate. Why? Perhaps because Obama wanted to use immigration reform as a wedge issue in 2012

We need to counter it with an equally powerful response. Liturgies in the style of the Misa Criolla could make a big difference.

I haven’t watched the video, but should the Church change her teachings about contraception and masturbation to put more Latinos (or any other group) in the pews?

The Evangelical church is a good place for weak Catholics. They can always mature into the Catholic Church later.

was this an official study done or merely an observation and did the study involve young hispanics in the united states or throughout all of the americas? sorry if this was mentioned in another post and i missed it.

Wow. The video was about the style of music used in liturgies, nothing to do with masturbation. 🤷

There is no reason to let Catholics leave the church to “mature” elsewhere. They might not find their way back. Let us help them mature within the Church rather than being asked to account for our brothers’ souls later.

If they will listen to reason, that’s all fine and dandy.

Catholics that I know to have left the Church do so in a huff due to marriage issues. But from experience in my own extended family, they are not about to listen to anything the Church has to offer. These people need a church until they are willing to accept responsibility for their marriage situation.

I know more than a few have come full circle.

That’s why the issue won’t be resolved. It’s a political maneuver. Similar to the tax code, which Congress and President use for social engineering.

Recently I heard it said on EWTN that in one of the South American countries, Brazil, I believe, that more non Catholics attend church than do Catholics. And I know an Episcopal church in my area of the US has 2 services. One in English and another in Spanish. And when I spoke to the Episcopal priest she told me the Spanish service is by far the heavier attended. There is also a Baptist church near me that advertises services and fellowship times in both Spanish and English. The other wk I also saw a non denominational church advertising a Spanish music night at their church.

I just don’t get the leaving the Catholic Church to get a closer relationship with God, or to mature in faith… To me, it really seems that too many people believe God should bend to man’s will. Ha! Man should always be bending to GOD’s will, always.

This belief is why there is over 33,000 Protestant denomination’s. Don’t like God’s rules at that church, move to another where the rules are different. That is laughable.

Young Hispanics are leaving the Church, probably because they weren’t truly formed in the teachings as they grew up. The teachings of the Church, all the meaning and beauty of the Trinity, the sacramental life, etc. need to be learned, it doesn’t just happen (no matter how good the song and flashy preaching is). If they don’t understand, the person explaining it to them might just be Protestant.

I said this once in a thread before. But a lot go Hispanics that come to the USA, want to be American and live the American life, and forget about the traditions, history that has been taught to us. They see how ppl just put god aside here and they feel they need to do the same to blend in.

Somebody mentioned it, that an ignorant catholic is going to be a Protestant. Unfortunately but true. Our generations need to understand that our ancestors were devout Catholics and for them the most important thing to pass on to future generations was our faith.

I hope these ppl going to Protestantism get hit in the mouth and see that what their doing is not right.

How much more of a “personal relationship with God” can you have than the intimacy of becoming one in full communion with Him? 🤷
How much is this truth taught? Remember after Vatican Ii many priests stopped during benediction, They removed the tabernacle from the altar. Sadly, I have read Calvin’s** Institutes **and found that what HE has to say about Holy Communion is more nearly orthodox than what is taught by many priests and nuns. 😦

That’s a very sad development. I think it was as late as the 50’s where 90% of Spanish-speaking people were Church-going Catholics. Also 90-some % of Italian, Polish, and Irish speakers.

I say sad because as fast as the Roman Empire was subsued by Catholicism in the first couple of centuries, it is now being squelched in many of those places.

That should be subsumed, not subsued. I apologize. :o

I come from a Hispanic family on my dad’s side, and I can attest that this is a real problem. The older generation is still Catholic, but most of the younger generation went away from it and are agnostic to atheist. I can’t speculate as to why, but I can say that a strong example from my parents and always going to Mass together has kept me in the Church. I pray for them constantly; it is sad to see how my family has lost their faith and probably related to this has become more fractured.

This is not necessarily limited to Latino families though. In my own caucasian extended family despite parents regularly taking their children to Mass and some of the boys being altar boys, as the younger generation grew into their 20s, many have left the practice of the Catholic faith as well.

Amen. Good point. They might never come back. And those who ask them to leave or who push them away now, might have to answer later.

I’m Hispanic and I have never gotten arrested nor gotten a ticket. Benjiboy you belong to a church that is filled with love and forgiveness and is not critical of others. Don’t you remember 2 wks ago how we heard the reading of the women who had committed adultery. What did god say, he who is free from sin cast the first stone.
your throwing the stone, your judging the whole group bc of several members.

Over the years, I’ve known many latino/latina former Catholics, including relatives. I do believe it’s a growing problem. And I believe ignorance plays a huge part. A former Catholic co-worker once asked me why Catholics worship the saints.

Oie Vey! I have heard it said that the Church could do a better job Catechizing people in general. A better job? The Church has been completely void of teaching anyone much of anything in the last 40 odd years, and especially our children! Not that the parents don’t have responsibility to teach their own kids, but it certainly doesn’t help when the Church drops the ball all together. That said, they are trying now to do a better job with teaching kids and even entire families, so it is starting to get a little better and hopefully will snowball into full fledge teaching of the faith.

But, to your point…intercessory prayer is something most protestants just don’t get.

The young are constantly indoctrinated into secular culture.
While at the same time the religion of there fathers is ridiculed and landless a hypocritical phonies. Sadly sometimes accurately
There is only one way to win back strays. That is by a joyfully repentence.
If adults showed a true following of the Gospel. Those traits will willingly be copied by the young.
Its. been shown over and over that living out your faith through love is powerful.
Especially if the model is shone by. a father
Its really the men of the world who have abdicated their roll.
If a man shows Christlike qualities and devotion to family
women and children will follow.
