Young African woman crawls 2.5 miles to attend Sunday Mass
Valencia, Aug 28, 2008 / 01:42 am (CNA).- The Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly in Chissano (Mozambique) took into their home this week a 25 year-old African young girl named Olivia, who despite not being baptized at the time and not having any legs, crawled 2.5 miles every Sunday to attend Mass.
According to the AVAN news agency, the nuns said that one day, they saw “something moving on the ground far away,” and when they drew near they saw, “to our surprise, that it was a young woman.”
“We were able to talk to her through a lady who was walking by and who translated into Portuguese what she was saying to us” in her dialect, they said.
The sisters said that although “the sand from the road burned the palms of her hands during the hottest times of the year,” the young woman crawled to Mass, “giving witness of perseverance and heroic faith.”
The young woman received baptismal preparation from a catechist, who periodically visited her at home. After she was recently baptized, one of the benefactors of the sisters donated a wheel chair for Olivia.

How many of us would go to this much trouble to get to Mass? I know of many that won’t go out in the rain or lite snow and these are not the elderly or ill.

One can only imagine what kind of relationship she has with God. It sure puts a lot of discussions and disagreements in perspective about what’s really important in the Church. Incredible.

Father I ask You in Jesus’ name to truly bless Olivia with genuine holiness and a powerful prayer ministry. Let her witness draw other to You, and inspire others to truly appreciates the Sacraments and our faith. We thank and praise you for such an extraordinary person.

…Alleluia Amen…

Her witness of faith will not go unrewarded in heaven. She’s a blessing for all of us who are made to know this story.

There are people on my block, and I live across the street from our parish church, who fail to even walk out of their house to go to mass regularly. God bless her and thank you for making us aware of this powerful story.

I know, that should make anyone who misses mass feel ashamed!

…and I do!..

This is another story to show the great faith of many of our African friends. I have met a few African immigrants at Mass and I found them to be very devout and orthodox. Christ is truly reigning in Africa!

I’ll remember this story the next time I consider missing Mass because of the weather or because I am tired. This woman is a great inspiration and we would all do well to follow her example.

Most people would not even perform this as a penance, and yet this woman endured this out of total love and devotion!

She puts all those excuses people come up with not to go to Mass into perspective.

I think she’s a Saint.

Today’s Catholic News Agency reported a story of a woman that just brings me to tears to think about her inspirational sacrifice to attend mass. It needs no words.

May we thank Our Lord for the sublime privilege and freedom we have in our respective countries to worship God, no matter which rite, and receive Holy Communion. “To whom more is given, more is expected.”

I pray we will think twice before any of us dares to complain that the mass is not up to our liking!

What a great story! Thanks for posting, Joysong.

I gave a copy of the article on Sunday to a boy in my 6th grade CCD class (Confirmation year) who NEVER goes to Mass. I attached a note asking him to read it, share it with his family, and give me his reactions next week.

Pray that it will have an impact!

Beautiful story!

In our parish, we have a young man who attends Mass most weeks. He is in a motorized wheelchair - I think he has some form of cerebral palsy, I am not sure. He drives his motorized chair about a mile to church and parks it in the aisle, then gets out of it and sits in a pew in the front row. He is so unstable - I have seen him fall a couple of times, yet he perseveres.

He is always pleasant and smiling and I pray to be half as patient and faithful as he is. What an inspration! It must be difficult, but he still keeps on going!

There are many people I know who complain about what an effort it is to get to church every week - they need to pay attention to Tim!

At one parish I know there is a blind woman that brings her guide dog every week.🙂 In our parish there are two normally in wheel chairs in the front row.

Our priest brings the Eucharist to those in the front and the EMs bring the Eucharist to those that remain in the rear.😃

This is now being discussed on two other threads. It is such a wonderful BLESSING to us all to see this devotion to the Holy Mass.

PAX
