Young nun wows judges on Italy's 'The Voice'

Love it when the judge asks her what the Vatican’s reaction was and the Sr. replied “They don’t know - I’m expecting a phone call from Pope Francis!!”

I like that she picked “J-Ax”, he actually cried, when she said that she was there to evangelize.

P.S. I can’t believe that one judge called the other “Bastardo”.

I wouldn’t behave like that and would not want any daughter of mine behaving like that either. On a broader note, in my opinion, these 10-minutes-of-fame “talent” shows nauseating anyway.

I like it. Although the song was most likely written about a person, I think the lyrics can be easily applicable for Sr. Cristina’s life. It’s a great way to evangelize.** People have this misconception of dour nuns and priests. **Showing a sense of humor, of fun, using your talents - these are things that will draw people to you. I hope she’s able to do well.

I know several nuns, two of whom are close friends, and they are cracking ladies. Very funny, full of fun and light of heart, but I would bet next month’s salary that none of them would do something as cringe-worthy as that little “performance”.

Sorry folks, it made me :nope: to watch it.

I must admit, initially, I thought how undignified.

In retrospect, however the nun is not trying to evangelise the faithful, but those who do not believe at all, and/or are lukewarm and through this showcase to a predominantly younger audience.

So, from that viewpoint, it will not do any harm for young non-believers to see the religious and the Catholic church as more accessible and approachable.

The faithful do not need to be evangelised. She’s there to evangelise to the non-believers/lukewarm Catholics particularly the young, through this TV show.,

I don’t know if the video in the OP is the shorter or longer version.

In the longer version, the rapper J-Ax is clearly moved to tears (this tough rapper covered in tattoos). He said that if he had someone at Mass sing like her when he was a boy, he would have continued going and by now he might even be Pope.

I hope this young sister with the pretty voice and the joyful face can inspire a fellow Catholic to go back to his faith, and start going to Mass. (she does tell him, “You can start now”)

I remember when “The Singing Nun” who sang “Dominique” was on the radio and I even watched a taped performance of her on the Ed Sullivan Show. As a young Catholic in a small predominately Baptist town, I remember feeling so proud. What a joy it was to see her. But now we know the sad details of her life after the limelight. What temptations there must be out there for those in the spotlight. This young Sister better be on her guard against the devil who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

That thought came across my mind, too. I just googled the singing nun story. I was totally unaware of what had happened, to her - very sad, and a warning.

I can’t find any online translations of the conversation she had with the judges, but these snippets give a little more information.

She said she was there because God has given her a gift and she was using it and she was using it to evangelise. …

Admittedly, I watched this a second time and I got emotional on the second run. She is truly an inspiration. And I’m an atheist! Go Sister Cristina!

In an unexpected turn of events she did choose J-Ax because he was the first judge to turn and face her…

Suor Cristina joined the order of the Suore Orsoline della Sagra Famiglia in Milano after participating in a musical at her local church. She was torn between joining the nuns or following studies at art school but eventually she decided that singing could be her way of sharing her faith. The rest of Italy now can’t wait to follow her next steps on the talent show.

THIS interview is all in Italian, but it is called “On stage conversion and call: the testimony of Sister Cristina.” If this gives her a platform to speak about Jesus and religious life, brava! It may be different in Italy, but where I grew up, I never saw a nun in a religious habit for 25 years. Just seeing that there are such things as sisters and nuns around may be a blessing to someone.

She apparently participated in the Good News Festival in 2000. This is a music competition of Christian inspiration, the brainchild of the Youth Ministry of the Vicariate of Rome, to listen to the voice of young people through music. Sister Cristina sings “Without your voice.”

If you’re talking about throwing up the horns, from what I understand, it’s an Italian cultural practice similar to Americans knocking on wood and/or giving a thumbs up.

Putting the horns face down in Italian culture is considered a counter to the evil eye/devil. While I’m Italian I don’t do it because I don’t understand how making a sign of the devil counters the devil.

Anyway, I think it’s great. It also goes to show how music can touch people. That’s part of why I don’t like the easy to sing music of today. It may sound like “experience seeking” or whatever, but hearing beautiful music in church can touch people in a way that they never want to leave as that guy was practically saying.

I was in Italy a couple years ago and when I took a train from Naples to Calabria there were some nuns dressed in habbits. I guess it just depends on the place.

You shouldn’t judge by appearances. Although he looks rough, if you see the full length of her appearance, she ended up moving him to tears. I don’t think it was just her voice that did so. He spoke about falling away from the church, and how perhaps he might not have, had there been music like hers. Just my interpretation, but it seemed like she touched his heart profoundly, and there was a lot more to his reaction than appreciation of her singing voice. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the very reason she picked him.

Sr. Cristina has been on tv before. I cannot get the translator to work, so I have no clue what this is all about. Perhaps someone else knows.
