Hey Tim,
Just to be competitive Bishop Anthony Fisher OP was ordained as an auxillary Bishop of Sydney 2 years ago at the age of 42!! (same age as me and I’m only 8 years Catholic)
He is at present in charge of organising WYD 2008.
Might see you there?
God Bless

Not only that but he has the nerve to have a baby-face and a full head of thick hair, so he looks about 29!

Yeah…kind of like when you start noticing doctors are younger than you are…you’re right…it just ain’t right!

Let’s all pray for this new Bishop. I hope a new generation of orthodox U.S. Bishops is on the way.

Here is a link to a news story. The soon-to-be Bishop Sample is apparently a recognized advocate for vocations. More good news for Michigan Catholics!
I’m sorry…but I still feel like when people point out things like this their is an inference that we have bishops who are supressing vocations…which seems unlikely to me.

Bishop Garland seemed to be a very strong advocate for vocations. I base this opinion only on the first statement from the Bishop’s page on the Diocese of Marquette website.

According to the article I referenced, Father Sample had participated in the current U.S. seminary reviews. Some people of authority, including Bishop Garland and Pope Benedict XVI, seem to think he has something good to offer in this particular struggle. That is all I was “inferring”.

YAY a young bishop!!! Whilst many people here may consider it a negative thing, I do not, I would consider a younger bishop to be better at connecting with the youth, which is exactly what we need, the youth are the future of our church, not the old. 😃

Slightly off topic but relates to the “oldness” factor - prior to my conversion, my husband’s pure blood Catholic family was good friends with a priest and they spoke highly of him all the time although he moved to a different state. Well, it just so happens that we (my husband, myself, and my in-laws, and a sister and brother-in-law) were vacationing in the same town where he was a pastor. So, of course we went to visit him. Upon meeting him, I exclaimed, meaning as a compliment, something like, “Oh! I was expecting someone much older.” He was in his late30’s, early 40’s I believe and I never recalled seeing or meeting a younger priest. But what I meant as a compliment my mother-in-law said was an insult. Opps. At least when I was baptised a year later all that was forgiven!

**Bishop-elect Sample’s ordination to be televised
**
Here is an excerpt from the article:

…Although St. Peter Cathedral is not large enough to hold everyone who wishes to attend the ceremony, it is the proper site for the ordination. A high point in the liturgical rite is when the new bishop is solemnly escorted to the bishop’s chair, called the cathedra, and is seated upon it. At that moment, he assumes the pastoral care of the flock entrusted to him and assumes the role of teacher of the faithful, symbolized by the chair. This simply cannot be replicated at any other venue. In addition, the rite specifically calls for the ordination to take place in the cathedral church, a requirement that has been adhered to even in much larger places, such as Milwaukee.

I personally think this is a key quote:

"Bishop-elect Sample has requested that the formal invitation list for his ordination be kept to a minimum to make room for as many representatives from the parishes as possible in the Cathedral itself. Each parish and mission is being invited to send up to three representatives, excluding the priests, deacons and pastoral coordinators. "

That’s refreshing, seeing as how so many of these ordinations/installations have delegations from the bishop’s home diocese that out number the people from his new flock.

When Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller was appointed bishop in the archdiocese of Chicago in 2003, he was only 46yrs.old. And we truly blessed by his ministry.

Just Beautiful!!

Congratulations on your new Bishop!

I really have much hope for this new generation of priests and Bishops. I just know that they are going to strengthen our Church.

I eagerly await the appointment of a Bishop in our own Diocese. This is so exciting.

Just Beautiful!! 🙂
