No, no NO!

I may not know a lot about Catholicism and Latin and lots of other topics that we discuss here on CAF, but I DO know a LOT about figure skating!

My family has been involved with this sport for 24 year as competitors in singles, dance, and synchronized team events.

The skaters and teams THRIVE on the clapping from the audience. They love it. It galvanizes them, and make the adrenalin flow so that they can skate faster, jump higher, and give 100%!

Please, everyone, keep in mind that you are hearing the competition on a tape, not live, and even if you watch it live, there are delays in the sound on a television or online broadcast, and that’s why you think you are hearing them clap out of synch. When you attend competitions in real life, the audience is in time and in synch with the clapping to music–we’re not stupid! And also keep in mind that in real life at the competitions, the audience stops when the music changes timbre or style.

And keep in mind that many experienced fans and family members who are in the live audience have seen the same program many times during the competition season (practices are usually open to family members and fans), so they know if the music speeds up and slows down and will adjust their clapping.

Usually the skaters and teams are hearing the music louder than the audience hears it, ecause the speakers are placed so that they can hear music well and not be distracted by audience noise. Skaters and teams hear it better than the audience. They are concentrating on their music and for teams, counting (often, the teams do not skate on the beat, but they count so that they can skate in unison).

But no, for heaven’s sake, don’t even think about stopping the clapping during the music. The skaters and teams LOVE IT! It is a thrill for them to get the audience involved with them–it helps them skate better! Please don’t even voice such a thing!
👍

The audience inspired Jeremy Abbot to finish his short program so well. I love hearing a good audience that encourages a skater.

Three way tie Luge, bobsledding & Skeleton. I want to try doing all three!

100% dorky, but curling, followed in close second by men’s slope style skiing. Those guys are amazing!!

Frankly, I <3 the Olympics! Go Canada!

The hockey final was da bomb!

WOW!

but I have to admit, watching hockey is like being a cat chasing a laser pointer beam. My mind just can’t follow the puck that well…LOL:D

That hockey game was not the final one, the medals game is next week, that game was just a prelim.

Ok, maybe not the curling, but the slope style skiing was amazing. 👍

I know, but didn’t you think it was exciting?
Oh yes, I cant remember seeing a hockey game with that many shootouts…BUT, like many others, I kind of wonder about that disallowed goal…yes the goal post was slightly out of its position, but only by an inch or two, I think the puck would have still went in had the goal been fully inserted.

I hate NBC. The pre-empt prime time to show junk that already happened, but they will not pre-empt the soaps, cartoons are anything to show live sports. I turned on live coverage at 2:00 pm, when it starts, to see them doing interviews for a great hockey game they did not air. This network has terrible coverage, in that they only cover the Olympics as news, not as sports.
You can usually find some live coverage on the NBC Sports Network, CNBC or MSNBC. Of course a truly live broadcast from Russia will usually be early in the morning because of the time difference.

For years Bode Miller has been rather abrasive. It was in his interview, his sheer thankfulness of a medal and his emotions that I found the hero buried deep within his brash, cocky exterior.

Rest well, Bode, you earned it.

Amen! Especially admire the generous way he came to the defence of that reporter who was criticised for being mean or whatever in her interview simply because she mentioned Bode’s late brother, and he started crying.

I just saw him on Colbert. He had his medal. He was said that this bronze medal was the one his wife liked best and he was very proud of that. Remember that McKayla meme from 2012? That was* not* Bode Miller.

(I know. It wasn’t McKayla either, just bad timing. But I love it)

  1. Biathlon, because I’m always reminded of how Finnish soldiers on skis kicked Soviet butt during the Winter War. (I always root for the underdog – which is why I like Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team.)
No wonder the Russian white bear mascot cried when the Finnish hockey team knocked Russia out of competition. 😃

When I watched Bode on the super G, and how he was acting when all the other racers were coming down and they had his mic and his wifes mic turned on, I heard alot of their conversation, I gathered from this, his wife is probably always having to reassure him about things, thats the impression I got anyway, she definitely seemed like a much stronger person imo.

Much stronger? Are you aware of what he has gone through? I thought she was a great supportive wife. But much stronger? It wasn’t her brother that died or her injury.

Just a little geography note. Canada is* also* in North America. Maybe whoever made that photo flunked geography.
Yes I know where Canada is. However the photo said America, not North America. It also showed the US flag and its generally regarded as common knowledge that when the term ‘America’ is used, its meant to refer to the US of A.
