No, no NO!
I may not know a lot about Catholicism and Latin and lots of other topics that we discuss here on CAF, but I DO know a LOT about figure skating!
My family has been involved with this sport for 24 year as competitors in singles, dance, and synchronized team events.
The skaters and teams THRIVE on the clapping from the audience. They love it. It galvanizes them, and make the adrenalin flow so that they can skate faster, jump higher, and give 100%!
Please, everyone, keep in mind that you are hearing the competition on a tape, not live, and even if you watch it live, there are delays in the sound on a television or online broadcast, and that’s why you think you are hearing them clap out of synch. When you attend competitions in real life, the audience is in time and in synch with the clapping to music–we’re not stupid! And also keep in mind that in real life at the competitions, the audience stops when the music changes timbre or style.
And keep in mind that many experienced fans and family members who are in the live audience have seen the same program many times during the competition season (practices are usually open to family members and fans), so they know if the music speeds up and slows down and will adjust their clapping.
Usually the skaters and teams are hearing the music louder than the audience hears it, ecause the speakers are placed so that they can hear music well and not be distracted by audience noise. Skaters and teams hear it better than the audience. They are concentrating on their music and for teams, counting (often, the teams do not skate on the beat, but they count so that they can skate in unison).
But no, for heaven’s sake, don’t even think about stopping the clapping during the music. The skaters and teams LOVE IT! It is a thrill for them to get the audience involved with them–it helps them skate better! Please don’t even voice such a thing!
The audience inspired Jeremy Abbot to finish his short program so well. I love hearing a good audience that encourages a skater.
