That’s interesting because down here in South Louisiana people pursue eating just as much as they do drinking and the sad fact is that they indulge too much in both. I keep my opinions about drinking to myself but I think there is something very wrong with the way many people, both young and older, drink. I have always thought it strange that no one would sit down and drink half a gallon of orange juice from start to finish but mix alcohol with it and many will drink until they either pass out, vomit or can’t go anymore. I don’t understand it but then again, there are many things I don’t understand. Thanks for your comment!
(First, I never drink until I pass out, vomit or even get drunk.)

But I can drink a case of soda as fast as someone might drink a case of beer. 🤷

And if I liked orange juice, I could drink half a gallon. I know I have had a gallon of lemonade, especially if I was working outside.

I wasn’t speaking of you personally. The fact remains that the great majority of people do not drink plain juices or sodas the way many people imbibe alcohol. For reasons unknown, some will repeatedly drink until they are so drunk that they can’t walk or function. I find it a perplexing question, one that can’t be answered by anyone. Honestly, your intake of liquids seems to be outside of the ordinary for most people. I happen to like orange juice, but I would hardly drink a half gallon of it in one sitting. I also find it hard to believe that one person would drink and entire gallon of lemonade while working outside. Again, that behaviour seems to be outside of the ordinary for most people. I’m 6’ 1" and 215 pounds and couldn’t do it after working in the yard.

I also have to ask, why so defensive?

I drink a couple heavy pours of brandy every night. I love cheap American brandy (Christian Bros, E&J). If I run out of brandy I’ll have whisky (preferably Knob Creek). Occasionally I’ll mix it up and have beer/cider or a cocktail. It’s my nightly medicine 🙂

I can anwer your question. Peer Pressure. Yep, dumb reason, but most stupid actions have dumb reasons behind them. Sometimes it is a competiton of who can drink the most, then it hits you all at once.

I’m sure there are other reasons of why people get blackout drunk. Peer pressure seems like it is the biggest reason. Or atleast of what I have seen.

I’m not disagreeing with you but I think it may go deeper than that. I have seen people go after alcohol the way kids go after candy. I was at a party once where a guy was standing in the kitchen gulping beer and taking shots one after another. Later, he was throwing up in the parking lot and his wife took him home. Someone said “he does that all the time,” and this guy was just a regular Joe who you would never think twice about.

I’m an occasional drinker–wine with dinner, beer with brats or a hot dog at the ball game, once in a blue moon, a cocktail (I like Black Russians). I can only drink white wine, though, as red wine is a migraine trigger for me (even in the form of red wine vinegar or as an ingredient, so no Boeuf Bourguignon for me)–and yes, that does mean that I’ll pair a Chardonnay with a steak.

Of course you weren’t speaking to me personally. But if it wasn’t personal, why would you consider my answer defensive.

I was just indicating that although you couldn’t drink a gallon of liquid, others can. 🤷

Not that I regularly do. Just that I can.

Just as someone might drink more beer than usual when watching a football game, playing poker or working in the yard, I can drink more soda, lemonade or whatever.

The guy you are talking about gulping beer and shots, seems to have a drinking problem. I bet his wife is pretty tired of having to clean him up and take him home.

I enjoy alcohol, but I no longer tolerate it very well. I get a headache in the middle of my first glass of wine, or mixed drink. I can drink beer without getting a headache, but beer is too filling and doesn’t go well with food. I keep trying, hoping it will have changed, but no. I think I’m going to have to give it up for good. 😦 This is really hard for me, because I do like wine especially socially.

I drink a few glasses of wine most nights, with and after my meal. I’m mindful of stopping before half a bottle, which would be ~4 standard drinks and a suggested healthy max for a male to consume in one day (noting that other health advice may be lower than 4 a day, or looked at on a weekly basis).

Fine wine is a passion of mine. It’s one of the worldly/sensory pleasures that I need to be mindful of remaining detached from. I recognise it as a gift from God, but also a potential distraction from Him. I think we all have our own challenges in this manner, and this one is certainly a major one for me.

I stick with beer and rum for the most part. Not just any beer; Trappist Ales are my favorite, and then there is a plethora of craft ales I enjoy. I generally stick to a few drinks on the weekend, when I go out to dinner, or vacation. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect, so that alone limits my drinking, because it interferes with my workout routine.

I’m with you a bit on this one. I didn’t even start drinking 'til I was 40 (10 years back) and joined a rowdy girls bookclub where wine flowed. Over a couple of years I became dependent on wine every night (but not to the point that I couldn’t do my duties with the house and teen kids). I even debated whether to call myself alcoholic.

Thankfully now, I use active discipline to drink in a sensible way but as with you, I could easily lose myself in fine wine ‘appreciation’. It is such a pleasurable passtime! 🙂

When I say “passion” I mean it in a very different sense from dependence, verging on alcoholism. It’s not the alcohol itself I enjoy (other than perhaps the slight relaxing effect it may have), but I enjoy wine as a hobby. I have a cellar, belong to a few wine-groups, attend and host organised tastings, spend to many hours on the internet researching the topic and posting on forums, etc.

So for me it’s more along the lines of someone who loves collecting and working on cars, motorbikes, or collects art, or visits museums, or trainspots, etc. It’s more a hobby-obsession than an alcoholic-obsession. Does that make sense?

I don’t drink alcohol at all. I grew up around alcoholics and so I learned not to trust it.

Fair enough. I married into an Italian family that matches wine with their meals etc and wine is very much a staple along with good food so yes I think I know what you mean. I have misinterpreted where you’ve said you had to be “mindful of remaining detached from it” as implying potential to over indulge. Apologies. 🙂

I mean detached in the spiritual sense…as in not letting worldly matters distract us from God. It’s more that I tend to spend too much time focussed on it than over-indulging, and I know it’s not spiritually healthy to be so obsessed with anything - whether that’s wine, another hobby, football, vampire-fiction, etc.

I also married into an Italian family, but my love of wine preceded that.

PS especially vampire-fiction.

I would say that this guy is an alcoholic, no doubt about it.

Most alcoholics are ordinary people who hasnt yet reached that Point where they sleep in the gutter, they are still taking care of their work and families.

No, it is not peer pressure, it is an alcoholistic behaviour and a sign that the disease has started to develop.

Any drunkness that leads to a blackout is a sign that the person has developed alcoholism.

Scientists say that one blackout means that the person is an alcoholic and will no longer be able to take back the Control of his drinking, it can still take long time Before it is obvious but there is no return, only total abstinence.

I’m not sure I dislike any form of alcohol other than gin, tequila and mescal. I love most other forms of it. I really do; particularly beer and Irish whiskey. Well, I would have to say I love Maker’s Mark to distraction. Oh, and then there’s Crown Royal. Being in the Ozarks, I even like moonshine, if it’s done well.

I am quite fond of sweet wines of vintage quality. Aszu Essencia is hard to beat, although D’Yquem and nearly anyone’s Trockenbeeren Auslese are beyond wonderful (though horribly expensive).I’m not too crazy about dry wines, although I have sometimes drunk this really great dry red wine from Israel made by a vineyard called “Yarden”. Not discouragingly expensive, either.

However, I probably don’t take a drink more often than once every two or three months, maybe less than that. It isn’t the cost, really. I just don’t have the occasion to do it and don’t think to do it. I probably should drink more though. It’s supposed to be good for the heart, especially red wines. I should probably be drinking a glass of Yarden or something like it every night. But if one took a drink every night more cheaply, there are lots of good domestic wines. Unless one just really wants something exotic, very good wine is amazingly inexpensive in this country. The French and Germans should envy us in that regard. Perhaps they do, but it’s unlikely they would admit it.

Do you get a head ache with both white and red? Some people can tolerate white better.

I never got a taste for beer. I have it very rarely, my sister recommended a fancier brand which I liked, I think I had it last year at a barbecue. Don’t remember the brand though.

I don’t drink often. When I do it’s a glass, or one mixed drink. The most I ever drank at one sitting was perhaps 6 shots of something very watery. It was “ladies night” at a club.

My dad used to make homemade wine. We had a wine press and a wine barrel. He’d purchase a mix of different grapes ( a few cases). It took a few steps that I don’t remember. I think it would be in late august, early September.

The wine would be ready on the Feast of St. Martin, so early November.

My grandparents in Italy had a small vineyard. For the grape harvest they would have a picnic. It was supposedly a very nice time.
