What does the forum think about Dan Brown? I think he’s one of the most amazing and prestigous authors in a LONG time. His books are amazing.

His books are “page turners”. They are works of fiction with just enough fact to give you reason to pause.

Just enough “twisted” mix of fact (there were, after all, kings of France) and fiction (the whole idea of them being direct descendents of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdelene) to confuse the average person who has NOT made a thorough study of history and religion into thinking that “what ifs” are “what really was”.

Amazing my #$%@. FYI, he took up the work left unfinished by someone in the past decades. You think he came up w/ these trash from scratch all by himself !

You need to do some real reading from knowledgeable source…

catholic.com/library/cracking_da_vinci_code.asp

and The DaVinci Hoax

Only the ignorant calls him amazing. I call him devious!

Was this necessary? He was only offering his opinion.
Ignorant doesn’t imply stupidity, just ignorance. I am ignorant in a great many things, but I am capable of learning th truth on those things.

Maybe for any other books or movies, but not this. True Catholics know too well what this book is setting out to do. ‘Amazing’ is definitely not one of 'em and the ignorants need to know it for their sake.

I have a feeling this OP was flame bait pure and simple!

I think Angels and Demons was a better read than The DaVinci code, but all the books I’ve read by him have a simaliar story and structure. Not my fav author, but hey, it certainly gets people talking about God so it has to be good, right?

If ONLY it gets people talking about God but no, it has done some damage already like killing whatever little faith some has.

A third rate writer doing a mediocre job of covering the same sort of territory as Umberto Eco’s sublime Focault’s Pendulum with hack dialogue and cardboard characters. Brown is the same class of writers as the guy who writes the Left Behind series. Just plain bad writing, regardless of what one thinks of his subject matter.

You dare to declare that Brown is even in the same area as the divine Umberto Eco!? I spit on you. Ptui! 😛

😉 Just kidding, but still: *Puh-leez: *Brown is miles – no, lightyears away peeking through the wrong end of a faulty telescope at the ground Eco walks on, roses sprouting wherever his feet have trod.

(And in Brown’s footprints? Nothing but fertilizer)

i don’t think Dan Brown killed anybody’s faith. It’s just an intresting book. And i’m not ignorant. I think it is you that is ignorant because you’re so trapped and blanketed by the Church that you fear something that is diffrent.

Because someone doesn’t feel the way you do about a particular subject, does not mean they are ignorant. It just means they think differently.I, for one, enjoy differing points of view. Often times we get “stuck” by only having one viewpoint. And this, I believe is the sign of true ignorance as defined by Webster: having lack of knowledge.

I haven’t yet read the book. I will someday. After all, it is merely a book. I am secure enough in my faith not to be shaken. At least then I will be able to give an intelligent viewpoint.

I remember back when “The Last Temptation Of Christ” raised a furor. I read it. It was a book. I didn’t agree with it. But at least I could talk about it intelligently and not make blanket statements about others being ignorant.

For some reason, I see Dan Brown as someone who has an axe to grind with Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. You saw it starting with Angels and Demons and continuing with The Da Vinci Code. I am wondering where he will take this with his next book which I hear will be on the Freemasons.

He is vehemently anti-Catholic and a liar. He is most likely future resident in Hell.
I can’t imagine why any catholic would like his books.

Only in terms of subject matter! I couldn’t think of a broader contrast in the field of grand conspiracies of history fiction.

Sounds about right to me. 👍

was given two of his books (not “the code”) for Christmas a couple of years ago. the writing is so bad I could not get beyond the second chapter in either book. I think it is a scandal someone can be such an inept untalented writer and make all that money, a huge indictment of our society, in my opinion.

The Davinci Code is a good trashy paperback. It’s a page turner, and it’s neat how he has all of these little puzzles and stuff in it. The fact that it attacks the church, particularly opus dei, and the fact that many people are accepting it as truth and turning away from Christianity makes Dan Brown guilty of something I would not want to have to deal with.

He’ll know what the real truth is when he meets his maker. I hope he repents. He seems very arrogant.
