From where I sit, the top three reasons for drop in Mass attendance in
YOUR area of the country are:
- They all moved down south.
- They all moved down south.
- They all moved down south.
My point is, while everyone is complaining about lack of catechesis or lack of reverence or poor liturgies, maybe the real reason why Mass attendance is down in some parts of the country is more related to how secular governments have enacted laws contrary to the Catholic faith. Let’s face it, homosexual marriage laws and other initiatives contrary to our faith in states like Vermont, Massachusets and California aren’t attracting Catholics to those states and Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina arn’t going to embrace these ideas any time soon. High taxes alone are driving people down south and Vermont lost 9% of its total population over the last ten years.
There is not drop in Mass attendance here in the south.
The parish I belong to sometimes registers 10 new families in a week. We registered fifteen new families during the last week in July. You can’t find parking for most of the Masses and the fire marshall has threatened to fine the Church for overcrowding. We just built a 40 classroom school three years ago and they can’t build schools fast enough down here in the south.
Birmingham AL, Charleston SC, Greenville SC, Raleigh NC, Chattanooga TN, all beautiful little cities with booming Catholic populations. The Archdioces of Atlanta had 2015 people in the Rite of Christian Election last spring and the Holy Father appointed Auxilliary Bishop Zarama to assist Archbishop Gregory for us two years ago.
I don’t know what you all are doing in gloves and parkas on your way to empty Churches up North but I wear a polo shirt most days in February and have to get to Mass a half hour early to get a seat.
