Maybe not an apology but acknowledgement that an evil was done in the past.

It’s better than sweeping it under the rug and pretending it never happened.

I don’t see how that was necessary, it wasn’t like there was a recent discovery of this past racism. It was trotted out because now is the best time to virtue signal, for the brand.

I can imagine their board meetings when the protests started, a bunch of elites brainstorming with ideas to signal everyone how ‘woke’ they are. This is the best they found, and it requires no actual change or action on their part, business as usual.
