I’m sorry, but I have to point out on this issue that, it’s a fact of a free society that religious liberty has it’s limits. Number one, if circumcision was only being practiced by Jews in America, and was being done the actual God-ordained, Biblical way, none of us would be having this discussion now.
But since that’s not the case, it is worth remembering that the State has the authority and responsibility to administer and discern between the relative rights of people subject to it’s jurisdiction, and it has the duty to secure the liberties of those people, especially in the protection of the most vulnerable and defenseless among it’s subjects.
If I am a Santeria practitioner, no matter how fervently my religious beliefs require it, I am not permitted to sacrifice a goat in the park. A Druid cannot participate in human sacrifice. While I happen to think education is a better route to pursue on this issue than government bans, I must say that it seems to me a reasonable proposition to state that one person’s religious liberties end where another person’s inherent rights to bodily integrity, dignity, and respect for their physical personhood begins, at least on it’s face.
It is an issue of freedom and liberty all right: and the person whose rights are most at issue is the owner of the penis in question.
