I think it is because the schools are trying to maintain some kind of order. First it was long hair and then ear rings and now makeup. If a boy wants to wear a skirt that would be ok too because the school\ allows girls to wear pants so it is this move toward transgender. At one time there were certain things girls wore and certain thing boys wore now with transgender they can totally wear whatever they want but again the schools have to deal with the behavior.
Like I said, I am not sure it is any of the government’s business whether one has long hair, ear rings or make up. The claim to want to maintain order is an excuse that is frequently used to violate liberty. Especially since things like long hair and ear rings never violated any order anyway.
I would think any change from male role to a female role such as long hair and ear rings is where it started now it it makeup. Does it cause a distracttion, yes it does . And if the boys decide that they want to wear heels or skirts in fact there was a case where a boy wore heels and I believe he was suspended. So it does matter. It is just who sets the dress code and should there be any limits. If a girl can wear it why not a boy?
I agree with you, it is a distraction. I remember sitting behind a girl when I was in high school who had a row of 4 or 5 earrings going up the side of her earlobe. I had the normal one piercing per ear, so this was something new in the 70s. Even this was distracting as I recall sitting there looking at her ear, wondering how long it took her to get all those earrings in and out and wondering if I would ever want to do something like that… Of course I wasn’t listening to whatever the teacher had to say!
Of course the problem is, who decides what a male role is and a female role is? It is determined culturally, and of course culture can change. But the one thing that is for sure, what people wear or don’t wear is not the business of the government. I don’t recall long hair in my day causing much of a distraction, although there were those who wanted to force people to cut their hair.

Yes, school uniforms are a great idea. I think all schools should have them. No distractions, no big wardrobe budgets, no trying to decide what to wear today, no one-upmanship, and the schools have uniform exchange days.What kind of new-fangled educational philosophy are you trying to promote here?
This is why I think Catholic Schools have the right idea with uniforms. Even back in my school days, the question was often raised in the Catholic schools as to whether or not uniforms were a good idea. I always appreciated them: everyone is on the same level; you don’t have to think about what to wear every single day; you don’t encourage judging others based on external appearances; you are encouraged to express your individuality through thoughts and actions rather than mere externals; etc.
Our public school district has a dress code, the school board makes the decisions.
That is how it should be and any variation should not be allowed.
Our dress code though would only pertain to the shirt the boy wore, not the makeup. Is there a picture of the boy with the makeup on? It may or may not be goth. Some of the boys at my daughter’s school do wear eyeliner and paint their nails, and its not distracting at all and they are not making a statement or are transgender either.
