Why do you find an anarchy symbol and makeup offensive?

I don’t get it… he wore makeup, so what? Where is it written that makeup is reserved for women? There have been many cultures in which men have worn makeup.

And anarchy is just a political ideology. Last time I checked, the U.S. was a free country and you were entitled to your own politics.

It is very suspicious that the gay couple raising this child allow this type of behavior for so early age. I wonder how much of this type of behavior comes by the child’s own decision instead of the parents (maybe not directly)… I do remember that children are like “sponges”, especially in their early development.

I’m not sure about this school, but in three schools I’ve worked make-up was basically banned, as were many kinds of piercings. Perhaps the administration should have shown some leniency if this is indeed the rule since, as you say, it’s the last day. However, the women raising the boy have equally gone too far in pronouncing this an assault against free speech. Why didn’t they all just sit down to a nice cup of tea and discuss the issue civilly?

I always find it humorous when people have to go back thousands of years to some obscure former culture to “prove” acting strangely is somehow acceptable. Or, find one or two aberrant instances. Is that really a suitable standard now?

What may have been acceptable in other cultures and other time periods does not mean the behavior is normal in America today. So, at the very least, it is attention-seeking behavior in school, and as such, it is distracting and disruptive. However, I do think if it occurred for any random child on the very last day of school, it wouldn’t be a big issue. But, it is my understanding that this was an ongoing issue with this child and family, so the school probably had to be consistent in their dealings with them.

The school has the right and authority to impose a specific dress code or behaviour from students. I don’t honestly see why such a big deal is being made. They have a requirement, responsible parents should make sure their children stick to it, respect the correct authorities and discipline. Frankly, to say it is a matter of “free speech” is ludicrous precisely because there probably is a rule about girls wearing make-up to school, and I doubt you’d see many 14-year-old girls at the school with lipstick and mascara.

Again, mother of a 14 year old girl here, just completed the 8th grade at a public school. You most absolutely will find 14 year old girls with lipstick, mascara, blush, eyeshadow, etc, etc. at the school. There is no rule about no makeup in the dress code.

Now when my daughter went to the parish school, yes, there was a no makeup rule, but their dress code wasn’t as strict as my daughter’s public school. Go figure.

While rules are rules… Maybe alternative school is a better fit for him. If I were the parents of this boy I’d read the rules with a fine tooth comb to make sure they are enforcing the rules fairley and not just picking an easy target.
