The people who may have covered up the problem (i.e. the Bishop at the time, and his chancery staff) are in their mid-90’s now- if they’re even still alive. It isn’t justice when you sue a diocese for something that those who caused aren’t even alive anymore- it’s just revenge- and it is stealing from the Church.

Ah yes, but even the bible makes accommodations for the sins of fathers.
it’s just revenge-
Not “just revenge”, justifiable revenge.
it is stealing from the Church.
No, it is not. The perverts stole the lives of the victims and the Bishop stole their only hope for justice. I hope the Church is broke for a very long time and suffers horribly.

Revenge isn’t the Christian way. If it was, don’t you think God would’ve been justified in keeping mankind wiped out with the flood and not starting over again due to sins? Why else send his Son to die on the cross if revenge is so “right” and “justifiable.”

What a horrible look on life you have. Ever heard of forgiveness?

If the Bishops had run the Church the “Christian way” we wouldn’t have this shameful mess right now. Would we?

When you go to confession, your sins are forgiven, but you are still liable for the damages. That is why there is penance and purgatory.

The same thing goes for the Church, it must make amends.

Bishops are human, they’re not perfect. St. Peter denied knowing Jesus 3 times and Judas actually betrayed him.

While the abuse scandal is a shameful mark, nothing will be gained by revenge. Revenge does more harm than good.

Yes, the priest who did these horrible crimes did sin and they may or may not have repented that is not for you or I to judge. But why should the whole congregation suffer for the sins of others? What good can come of this suit? Can those who where harmed actually by healed by the money they will receive? Are you suggesting that the money will give them the peace they are looking for?

As a victim of a rape, can I sue my attackers family (since he has since past away) and demand that they pay me for his sins. What good what that do. It would only bring up painful memories for me who has since moved on, with forgiveness in my heart for him. It would also hurt a family who are already hurting with knowledge that their son is not only one who hurt someone they knew but who is also gone on to the next world.

The only key to healing in situations like rape is forgiveness, and believe me that is hard enough as it is. Why do we need to go after a whole group of people for the sin of one?

So did the bishops for covering it up and facilitating more abuse.

A Church that has been humbled and crippled financially will have time to rethink how it manages cases of abuse. It will be more inclined to make sure this never happens again.

I am sorry that you are a victim of violent crime.

If your attacker was tried and sent to prison, his family would suffer. That is the reality of crime in general, there are many victims.

Try not to confuse forgiveness with restitution. This is a situation about the sins of many, not just one.

I think much good will come of this. The Church will rebound stronger than she was.

It’s a well established principle of US law that the employer must answer for the actions of the employee within the course of his employment. If the priest were acting as a priest - say counseling, running the altar boys group, taking trips as a priest with parishioners, etc., and if the employer knew about the “frolics” and did nothing to stop them - then under the law of every state that employer is liable. Cut and dry.

The Bishops were counseled on the legalities. Their insurance companies certainly gave “hints” of the problems when they stopped insuring them. The Bishops are to blame here - not the victim, not the lawyers, not the law - THE BISHOPS. Cut and dry.

Stop the moaning about the money - God and mammon and all that. If you got a beef - and we all have a beef - it’s with the Bishops.

Yes it is not easy to forgive the abuse. I also know what it is to have to “get over it”. But get over it I did. I would never in my wildest dreams ask for money to fix what happened when I was a child. IT does no good to punish the Innocent for what the guilty did.

There are three generations of clerical abuse in my family. Nobody pursed the matter in civil court. That does not erase others ability to make a claim.

You “got over it”, my family did too, but others haven’t. Some innocent may suffer, but they too are victims of these pervert priests, not the plaintiffs of these cases.

Rather than whine, why don’t you cut your support off for the Church until she takes responsibility for this matter. That would get their attention much faster than these lawsuits.

What good the closing of more churches for lack of monetary support do? Is your answer thatwe should give every person a huge cash settlement that thinks they’ve been molested, even sometimes 30 or 40 years ago? A lot of times, the offenders have passed away, and are unable to defend themselves. I don’t believe this is the answer. When perverted policemen and teachers are found, do we cut off their support? No! Besides, the Church has taken responsibility for these abuses. We are in a healing process now, and hopefully this will make a difference.

You “got over it”, my family did too…
Sounds to me as if you have not gotten over anything at all, and are still extremely bitter and angry and looking for someone to kill over the whole thing.

If you have indeed “gotten over it”, then try being forgiving, and not desire to drag Christ’s Bride through the mud any more than she has been already.

Enough is enough.

I’m not saying closing schools and churches is good. I’m saying they are just another victim of these perverts. Focus your anger in the right place.

This has nothing to do with Christ. It is all about perverted men who failed to care for the church which was entrusted with them. Don’t blame the victims, even if they seek a settlement, it is the priests and bishops you can thank.

Passed on, actually, for the bishop.

The civil system isn’t about justice, it’s become about getting rich.
